Robert Prevost!

First ever from America

BORN in Chicago to a French father and Italian mother - DT would probably have sent them.bavk.
Also naturalised citizen of Peru where he has apparently spent much of his life.
Trust he can put DT and Vance in their place.

Apparently, he already has publicly corrected JD Vance interpretation of Christian charity to our neighbours in an article published whilst he was a bishop in Peru.

So, somehow I doubt Trump and Vance are thrilled with the election of Pope Leo XIV.

We shall see.

ON a lighter note: I think that seagull lives beside the famous chimney - he/she or one very like him/her was present at one of the previous elections - don't remember which, as I have seen them all since John XXIII

It isn't politics, if you believe then he was chosen by God, I don't believe but I don't think it is that helpful to see it in terms of politics.

Wonderful choice.

Wyllow and MayBee- so the Maga movement hates him and sees him a " Marxist puppet pope"?
I like him already!

Being born in America automatically makes you a US citizen. One of my DGS is one.

Not if Trump has his way!

I certainly don’t think that it is what the Trump aligned bishops wanted.

Leo has criticised both Trump and Vance over their refugee policies.

Commentators seem to think that he may well continue in the same way as Francis

The MAGA lot seem to be calling him another ‘Marxist puppet pope’ so imo that can only be a good thing…

They are certainly getting wound up

Just had a quick check - and lots of Mumsnetters are very confused - and calling him American (presumably on the grounds he was born in America). Come in Joanna Lumley - apparently you must be Indian, rather than English, because you were born in India..........

One of my friends was born in America of Italian parents. She is American not Italian. The Pope is also American.

A couple who are friends of mine are in Rome on holiday now
Like me they are both Catholic so will have plenty to be overjoyed about
I put the TV news on as soon as I heard the that white smoke was coming from the chimney. When the Pope appeared on the balcony I am sure I saw tears in his eyes.

Why does it take so long to choose a new Archbishop of Canterbury?

Possibly because Justine Welby is still living in Lambeth Palace, with seemingly no intention of moving out until he has to - July maybe.

On the offchance that anyone doesn't already know - Conclave is now free to view for subscribers on Prime. I plan to watch it this evening.

We watched it this evening. 😯

He has disagreed with Trump's policies and especially with Vance.

Perhaps he will be a mediator, a change for good.

I'm delighted about the promise of this new Pope! I'm hoping he will be the voice of reason, the voice for everyman in a world of increasing extremes.

It’s disconcerting that he has called himself after my grandson.

You will get used to it. Pope Francis called himself after my GS.

Wyllow3 Thu 08-May-25 21:39:09

I had to look up synodality keepingquiet which looks like a good thing in terms of "inclusive", so why is he described s having a conservative view on women's participation?

Let's hope your grandson will tolerate it.............

Is it disrespectful to say I kept thinking of Paddington when he mentioned Peru?

Is it disrespectful to say I kept thinking of Llamas when he mentioned Peru?

None intended from this lapsed Catholic.
Looking quickly at his CV he seems like an extremely able man and a smart political operator.
Lets hope so.
The world needs both.

They were quicker than in the book.
I wonder what gender the new pope is?

Why would we need to know?
Prevost opposes ordaining women as deacons, so unless he has TW deacons on the grounds that they’re not women, there’s not a problem.

In the book he was intersex.

I've just been checking what's on over on Amazon Prime, and see Conclave is now included in the monthly subscription and no longer an add on. Well timed!
