Who will he be?

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 08-May-25 17:29:31

He will be in the Room of Tears now. Emotional. Praying.
Trying on one set (out of three set aside) of papal robes and selecting one box containing new shoes out of the half dozen sizes awaiting the wearer.

People are rushing into St Peters’s Square, some of them vaulting over barriers. The crowds are cheering and clapping and the great bells of the Basilica are tolling.

There is practically a stampede of thousands of people heading into the square, many of them running. Loud cheering, applause, people excited to get as close as they can to St Peters’s Basilica.

The church bells went crazy just now here in Spain. For a moment I wondered why, then realised there must be a new Pope!

It was very quick this time

karmalady Thu 08-May-25 17:33:44

I hope he is a compromise pope and brings back some tradition, we need the stability in an uncertain world

I thought it would take much longer!

White smoke has been seen so we should know quite soon. Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle are said to be front runners but, we won't know until we have an official announcement..

It was very quick karma. I take that as a good sign (not much dissent) as consensus was quickly found.

Watching and waiting ….

karmalady Thu 08-May-25 17:49:02

I hope it is the Maltese cardinal Mario Grech. He is a peacemaker and would be a compromise pope, following on from Pope Francis

What an incredible sign, on the 80 anniversary of VE day and Pope Francis called home at Easter

rafichagran Thu 08-May-25 17:53:07

Watching now. Interested to see what name he takes.

Our Diocesan pilgrimage is in Rome just now.
Friends of mine are part of it, due to fly home tomorrow.
What are the chances of that happening, to be there at such an exciting time..

It has happened very quickly, hasn’t it? I hope the chosen Pope is a man of true peace and kindness, rather like Pope Francis was.

Once in a lifetime, wonderful experience. They are going to be so uplifted

With all respect- how do you know?

. We’ve many of us seen The Two Popes, and I think he is more likely to be having a nice cup of tea and a hobnob- maybe even a chocolate one. .

The first US Pope!

GrannyGravy13 Thu 08-May-25 18:18:20

POTUS Trump will see it as a sign that he is also the chosen one

rafichagran Thu 08-May-25 18:18:24

Pope Leo.

MayBee70 Thu 08-May-25 18:18:25

I feel rather moved by all this. Maybe it’s because the last Pope seemed to be such a good person.

karmalady Thu 08-May-25 18:19:18

Robert Prevost!

First ever from America

Even the BBC interviewer said he had to ask, “Is this anything to do with DT?”

Ugh. We all know he is going to take any chance he can get to take credit.

Though I am not Catholic, it is amazing to see the traditions and ceremonies. I hope the American continues where Francis left off.

karmalady Thu 08-May-25 18:25:01

Quite young, could be pope for 20 years. I hope he is a traditionalist

Mt61 Thu 08-May-25 18:27:18

American. Donald will be pleased.

grumppa Thu 08-May-25 18:27:33

Why does it take so long to choose a new Archbishop of Canterbury?

MayBee70 Thu 08-May-25 18:28:06

He looks very kind, gentle and genuinely moved by it all. And has a lovely smile.
