I haven’t been to a lot of them but the three favourite ones I have actually spent time in and loved would be
Venice
Bergen and
Budapest. For different reasons.

Copenhagen, Stockholm, Kristiansand.

All because of their great cultural and community life

Liverpool is great.

I'd like to put in a shout for Dundee, for the way it sits in its surroundings. It fronts on to the Tay estuary and there is a fabulous panoramic view of hill ranges from the top of The Law, the ancient volcanic plug that rises behind the city. Wish I was there now.

I love our British cities so they are a given.

Yes, Mollygo - and there are different reasons for different cities too.
I'd never go to Florence in the summer for example - when everywhere is packed out. Also, we tend to stay outside and come in for the archirecture, galleries and gardens. I am one of those visitors who likes to chat to locals, and try to live a bit like them for the three weeks or so of our trip.

We now have friendships with locals we re-visit when we holiday there - people who have welcomed us into their homes.
They are not like "home" friends but it's nice to have a catch up with them, learn to cook something new and learn about their way of life over the years.

The idea of the 3 cities is interesting though.
I wonder if everyone else (as I have done) wondered what criteria to apply?

I think that some of the places we love most are not actually a city.

That’s true. We fondly remember staying in gîtes in some lovely places, but they were in villages.

We returned from our fifth visit to Venice today. It was hot, crowded, chaotic, over priced and completely fabulous.

Venice for sure although my last visit was in 1965.
Capri, is that a city?
Rimini in Italy. Nobody goes there anymore.

Mini moon, I am not a fan of Turkey at all and have suffered about 10 visits to visit in-laws and they aren’t even Turkish. Ankara was much more civilised than
Istanbul which I avoid at all costs. Lol.

I suppose, DrWatson some of us like "earthier" places. I'd choose Naples over Stockholm any day - yes Stockholm is clean but further out is more interesting (though not a city).
Edinburgh is nice enough but Glasgow has grit and is "warmer" I think.

I don't mind shabby.
