Asking 'stupid' questions.........?

Here's another couple of stupid (trivial) questions!

Hanging up laundry on the line. I do what I have always seen other people do which is not to stretch the clothes out with the pegs but to leave some 'give' - j presume it's to catch the breeze and dry more easily. Or is it just to save space on the line?

What do people do with: an earring that's lost its pair? I have a box of about 30 odd earrings saved over the years....too nice to throw away and the other one might turn up- but never does.

Grr, posted too soon. Once a month a lady comes in to buy this jewellery. She makes new pieces of jewellery using the old pieces. I take in anything I have which is no longer wearable.

About the loo problem,I would squirt bleach under the rim, a lit of it, then scrub it with a loo brush, then do the same again but put rubber gloves industrial ones, go round the rim with an old toothbrush until its spotless. It takes time to get a plumber to replace a loo and perhaps money is tight. Someone always has the answers to most things.
One of the most stupid things I did all my life until I was 70 was spell raspberry without the p. Always been a very good speller but that one got past me.

Asking questions, on any topic, is a sign of an enquiring mind and shows intelligence.

Except when someone has already given the answer and you can’t be bothered to listen ( eg in the classroom). Still, that doesn’t make the original question stupid, just the questioner.

I do get irritated on GN when informative, factual answers, with links, have already been given, yet others offer their own ( wrong) answers.

Many years ago I did a computer course (I had a bit of basic knowledge as my late father was a computer nerd!) and the tutor was rushing through saying things like "click on the icon" and talking about character spacing etc and there were a lots of blank faces.
So I put up my hand (although I did know what she meant) and said "Excuse me but a lot of us are new to this and haven't used a typewriter or anything before, so do you think you could explain the basics like what a character or an icon is before we go on please?"...which she did.
The people either side of me both said they were so glad someone had asked because they felt too embarrassed to because they assumed everyone else must know what she was talking about!

I know on mumsnet you’d be savaged for a lot of questions but it’s rarely unkind on here.

Yet another "silly" question. This has come up on GN several occasions and it puzzles me.

Why does getting older mean that you have to have wider gussets in knickers. I am well into my 70s and I still wear the same width gusset that I always have worn ever since I can remember and it still seems adequate.

Perhaps I should add that I am lucky enough not to suffer from urinary incontinence (yet) and I have never gone in for thongs.

A few times I have read enquiries on GN that have been answered curtly with the words 'Google it' or 'Google is your friend'. Am I being stupid in asking if other people find this dismissive or maybe even rude?

They probably don’t know the answer 🙄

If they are real gold, weigh them in & make some money, you could also sell the single earrings on Vinted ( boys usually wear one).

It's only a form of words. Like the British thing of saying 'sorry' even when someone else walks into you. It didn't stop us building an Empire!

ExaltedWombat, you've got that right. I use the word stupid as a way to portray humor. I should have just omitted that word from my question.

However, since we're on the subject of keeping loos clean and fresh, I like to occasionally drop a denture cleaning tablet in mine.

Once I ran out of cleaners and cleaned the loo with gritty pumice type soap that mechanics use to wash their hands and it did a far better job.

I don't know the answer to your laundry line question but if I were to guess, i would guess it is to give the dry clothes an even shape so that the pegged section compared to the bottom-blowing-in the-wind section doesnt make your towels a trapezoid sort of shape.

(I will pretend I didnt actually say bottom blowing in the wind.)

I agree, how are we supposed to learn anything if we don’t ask questions, silly ones especially.
As a seven year old, I asked if a person jumped off 2nd storey building & he died, then would someone who jumped off the top floor, would they be even more dead 😂 I got rollicked for asking such a daft question, which in turn knocked my confidence.

On another thread someone said she wanted to ask 'a stupid question'. It was not stupid - and it was great that she had asked, and received an answer. It struck me how easy it is to worry about looking stupid - and often it turns out that other people had the same question and are glad you asked! I wonder what 'stupid' questions others have hesitated to ask? Maybe they have actually asked already, or maybe they remain unanswered. If anyone is brave enough to ask the question they have feared asking before, I think there are people here who will do their best to answer - and be impressed by your being brave enough to ask.
Incidentally, there is a great book called "Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway", by Susan Jeffers - paperback, not expensive and helps with lots of fears. She taught me to ask even if I thought it might be a stupid question, and I cannot now think of an example of my own - but look forward to seeing what others offer.

I think it’s because there are a minority on here I’m sad to say who can be quite sarcastic and unfeeling about what they say.

I think on GN I have said this may be a silly question but ..... But on my HPX group I say it's me again and ask my question.

I only reply to questions if I know the answer or had personal experience of the subject . My replies haven't always gone down well. But I am honest if you don't want an honest answer don't ask the question.

The question of the loo. I squirt bleach under the rim and then rest of loo basin and leave a hour . I have some brushes designed to clean tea pot spouts they have wire handle that can be bent so the bristles can go under the rim and clean .

But here is a question why does under the rim of the toilet get marked as water is just flushed out under it. It's not as if anything that is deposited into the toilet gets under it?

Re the loo. The filth under my rim looks like poo. But it could be limescale?? Tbh i have stopped sitting on the floor and am saving up for a rimless loo.

Am. Afraid I can't help with gussett question...never noticed the width of my gussets ..but i will begin doing some research!

eazybee The purpose of giving links, is 1) to stop people asking for the proof for what facts or statistics one has written. The eevidence is in the link, and 2) Not everyone is confident googling, or has the skills to judge the results and often the information they need is quite specific and there is a government or charity or similar website that gives all the information they require on an authoritative and accessible fashion.

I have yet to see anyone write that they do not want to read the solution to a vexing problem by reading the relevant Age UK or Citizen's Advice site but rather just read what GN members think (often incorrectly)

I quite agree. Also, a link lets me see how reliable (or not) a source is.
