Adventures with Rosalind, a childrens' book

Did anybody here ever have this book as a child? My Mum gave mine away to a friend's child without asking me, when I was still quite young - and I was not happy. I told DD about my loss, all those years ago, and it took a couple of years but the other day she turned up with a copy for me.

Thing is, it is not as I remember it. She found the full hardback book (which I am reading with pleasure). I think mine must have been a version for younger readers, big pages, 7 stories, each taking just a few pages, with the story written under quite large pictures. Am I mis-remembering? Can anyone help me?

"Rosalind" wasn't the only thing my Mum passed on without asking. My much loved baby doll with curly hair, Isbuff, (Elizabeth) disappeared one Christmas. She never came back. My Aunt, to whom Mum had sent it as a present for her youngest, had already sold it. I did get my soft toy rabbit back (Wabbit). I still have him. He keeps my meercats and a toy rabbit I won at a fair company. I also have a picture of me at about 6 months old with a big grin on my face and Wabbit in my arms.

My mum gave away or threw out all of my dolls and teddies and also a photo I’d taken of them. And my books. It has taken me decades to find some of those books. They have all been pretty much as I remember them; in fact I felt as if I’d just put them down and picked them up to read…I could remember every word, every picture. The one book, a picture version of Lad, a Dog wasn’t exactly how I’d remembered it but I did find another version that was identical to mine. It was so tatty that someone could easily have thrown it away thinking no one could possibly want it ( thank goodness they didn’t). There are lots of Facebook pages about old books. Maybe someone on one of them might have a copy of your book ( I can’t check as I’ve been locked out of my Facebook page which is very frustrating as I’m on a lot of niche pages). You could put a picture of the book you’ve got and ask if anyone has a different version.

The one I was on was called Old Children’s Book Covers. I could ask on there ( I can check as can still access it on my computer but not my iPad and can’t post any pictures).

I had a mother like yours Aely.
Everything I had eventually disappeared.
I loved horses 🐎 my hand me down rocking horse with thread bare mane went ( to "that sad little boy" who's mother threw it away, I was later told, as he was scared of Silvers grinning teeth😬), the sit and ride horse was given to a neighbours child (Mum had an argument with them and used it to get back into their good books), my crystal cinderella high heeled play shoes with a picture of a horse on the toes, apparently mysteriously broke and we're never to be seen again. Last but not least my hard back copy of Black Beauty was given to 'that bright little girl down the road, as you're to old for it now arn't you?'
Then catastrophe, my long pony tail that I used to love to swish about was cut off for a more practical fringe and ear length bob. I was shell shocked.
Do I sound bitter? No I hardly think on it now😂🤣😂🤣

I don't recall the book you mentioned
Even though I was a bit of a book worm as a child.
I have gone back to reading books Ive enjoyed, and found them significantly different from my memory of them though.

MayBee70 it seems mothers were different then.
I always felt I wasn't allowed to enjoy anything as a child. Left me with, shall we say a decidedly different view on possessions.

I think my mum threw everything away as it broke her heart when I left home at 17. It’s one of the reasons why I struggle with throwing anything away.

I think my mum saved everything I'd ever touched!
That's pretty grim too - in it's own way!

My gran said to me " You're a bit old for that dolly, love, can I give it to a little girl I know who has no dolls or toys at all? "
I handed it over reluctantly, and next time I saw Gran, I asked eagerly "Did that little girl like my doll?"
She then told me one of her friends had popped in with her little grandaughter, who'd spotted the doll, and loved it! So Gran gave it to her! I was really cross and upset.

My Grandma saved up coupons from Fairy washing up liquid to get me a baby doll that wad their mascot, very early 60s, anyway long story short I hadn't had it very long when it was given away to a relative, when we visited it was covered in biro and its tummy had been slit open, books I had given previously had all been drawn in and torn, I was so upset I was only about 5 myself.

After my mum died when I was 15 I had to get rid of lots of my childhood toys as I was moving in with my gran and there wasn’t space to keep much. The only thing I truly regret not keeping was my dolls house, my Dad had paid his brother, who was a ship’s carpenter in Govan shipyard to build it for me. My parents painstakingly furnished it with furniture from the walrus and carpenter shop. They used the same wallpapers we had at home in each room. Our next door neighbour who was an electrician also in Govan shipyards he fitted tiny lights that ran off a large square battery in the attic. It was really on the large size, but I loved it. When we were moving out I gave it to a neighbour’s daughter who was deaf as she used to ask to come play with it all the time. I’m happy it went to someone who loved it as much as me, but would have loved to pass it onto my own daughter.

Mine sent some things to me in a very large trunk when I moved into a flat. Most of the toys had gone but I do still have a few books, although I'd given most away to my niece and nephews.

My absolute favourite book was Adventures of a Teddy Bear by Mrs H C Cradock.

Yes, me too today, Maybee

I've had it with FB, posts from friends are there then disappear, but I can't get in to delete my account!

Oh no. You too. My partner has just locked himself out of his phone and has gone to a nearby shop to get it unlocked. He’s going to ask if they can sort my iPad out, too. I use Facebook for so many things. I keep looking up recipes which then send me onto Facebook which, of course, I can’t access. It’s messenger that is my main problem; it’s the only way I tend to communicate with my daughter ( even though she only lives five minutes away). I can still access it on my computer but that means going upstairs but I don’t know how to put photos on Facebook from my iPad or phone. I’m always looking things up on Facebook. Eg I found out, from looking up one of my childhood books, that there are lots of people in America that love the book too and they have an annual get together. Not that I’m likely to get to that ever.

AelyI had Adventures with Rosalind. A hard back book which I loved and still have. The little boy in it was called Kenneth, he had to stay in bed because of his leg or something and his mother found a picture book for him in a strange shop. He studied the pictures closely and the girl in the book, Rosalind, took him on wonderful adventures.
I kept it to read to my children but I had two sons who weren't the slightest bit interested in it!

I've managed to get in again with the help of a DD. Now I need to change my password, I think. All very odd.

Oh yes, Messenger, impossible to access messages as they are encrypted! 🤔 Perhaps I'll just delete it altogether!

MayBee70 Thu 22-May-25 22:35:28

The shop that my partner went to today said they can get Facebook back on my iPad but I have to take id with me. I’m still scared to do it in case I lose it in my computer. Trouble is I have so many passwords for so many things. I try to be organised with them but feel a bit overwhelmed. Even today I couldn’t access Ch4 catchup on my tv and had to plough through no end of different passwords to sort it out.

Oh passwords. 😃 I know people who use the same one for everything!

Mollygo that is so true and so funny.
Thanks for reminding me of this.

Back to the OP
I found some of my favourite childhood books on the Internet. Beric the Briton I’m reading for free as a PDF download. Annabel and Bryony by Marjorie Phillips is now on Kindle but I can only read John and Mary by Land and Sea if I’m willing to pay £35 plus P&P .
My mum gave away my Bobbsey Twins books because “they might encourage your cousin to read.” They didn’t!

I do remember that one but it's just as funny now!

I loved Tales of the Greek Heroes by Roger Lancelyn Green.

DH and I still have our copies somewhere 🙂

Aely Fri 23-May-25 21:00:57

Bamm, that's the copy my daughter bought me, the regular hardback book. The book I had, I remember a picture of a row of very old shops with, I think, bow windows and Kenneth and Rosalind looking at them. I think that must have been the Forgotten Town? My other memory of the copy I had was the Seven Seas, but not the picture that went with them. The other stories have fled my memory.

My picture book actually went to the daughter of a friend of my mother's. Her name was Rosalind. I contacted a member of the family a few years ago and got a message back that Rosalind remembered and loved the book, but did not know what had happened to it.

My rocking horse, a home made beauty called Jamspot (it had big red spots) was made out of slabs of wood, probably cut with a fretsaw. The seat was flat and it had two handles sticking out from its head. His mane and tail were flat, fuzzy and pinned on. I really liked Jamspot and I used to go a great distance riding him (in my head) but I would have loved reins and stirrups. He went to a younger cousin.

When I left home at 21, I couldn't initially take my electric train set, which I had bought from a friend at work when he was short of rent money. When I could retrieve it, there was very little left. The engines were wrecked and the buildings and track accessories broken. My mother, furious that she was losing my rent money and control over me, had given it to my 6 year old brother to do with as he would.

Somebody on Facebook did put up a picture of the book but I think it was the one that you’ve got. When I was looking for the Lad, a Dog book it was easy to find the hardback ones that were mainly writing but it was pure luck that I was able to find the picture version. Maybe children’s books aimed at younger children tend not to survive . At least I have a picture of my teddy even if the picture of my other toys has gone
