Anyone for Sausage…….Dogs?

My DD has a couple. And has just taken on a puppy that someone gave up as he was the wrong dog for their situation, they should have got a fully trained older rescue really
They are so loving and cuddly, but they also happily go on nice long walks, which 2 of them really enjoy, the other does it but wouldn't choose to. They are brave, and well yes I guess they can be dressed up, but they really need a fleece coat when it's cold or very wet, because their short legs mean they get cold wet tummies
Her partner has no worries about having sausages, they are big dogs in little bodies. Look up the story of Valerie the sausage dog who survived over 500 days after being lost on an island off Australia. A big dog in a little body

Yes they really need ramps to help them onto the sofa or your bed,

Though I do wish they’d stop breeding so much, and stop breeding pugs and French bulldogs and all those that end up with breathing issues completely!

Yes, I agree this can be a common issue.

One of the bravest little dogs I have ever seen was a mini pinscher. Our neighbour had one and he would stand his ground with any size dog. A real little character.

Our daughter and S-in-Law have two! A miniature long haired boy called Eric, and a rough haired girl called Iris! They are absolutely gorgeous, and together with our Cocker, make a formidable trio!!

This is our daughter's mini-sausage, who we look after a couple of times a week and when she goes on holiday. She is adorable, very loving and we love her very much.
We are always mindful to pick her up with two hands so that her back is always supported. She is not a "barker" although she does bark sometimes.
She loves her walks, is very sociable, can be left for a few hours and is very chilled.

While I love their sweet little faces, in my experience they are quite yappy and hard to train.

I do melt whenever I see one, and am the first to go give a pet. We noticed when we were in Barcelona that there were an awful lot of them, compared to other small dogs! I suppose they make great city dogs.

Decades ago I lived in a the upstairs flat of a beautiful house in Germany. The owner was a gamekeeper and he had two gorgeous rough coated dachshunds, Connie and Caesar. They had a run in the garden complete with a tree, a tunnel and their one chalet style kennel - very swish!) They were absolute sweeties. The smooth ones do seem to have become popular recently but I do feel a bit sorry for them when it snows as their legs are so short.

None of the breed in our family but my sister has expressed an interest in having one one day and intends to call it Richmond.....

Yes, I agree this can be a common issue.

They were bred to go down holes in the ground. I think the problem with their backs is probably due to a domestic lifestyle in which they jump onto sofas and into cars. I’d be paranoid if I owned one. I have known yappy ones but also know a lovely wire haired one who I’ve never heard bark; I adore him.He has to wear a muzzle because, like my whippet he will eat anything and everything, no matter how disgusting. I don’t know if they’re all like it. Along with his Romanian rescue pal he always recognises and runs up to me no matter how long it’s been since I saw him. The breeder I got my whippet from is now breeding Dachshunds and her bitch hunted down and killed a rat the day before she gave birth, After having a Cocker Spaniel that was, unusual for the breed, a yapper, I’d never want another yappy dog.

Someone in my DSIL’s family has one who at a quite young age (4?) has IVDD and is now fitted with wheels as his back legs don’t work. It was very sudden and frightening, though I am told he is coping well.

People often forget they are hounds, and like many other hounds, they’re really not inspired to work with their human (so not easy to train), and prefer to be in a pair (and a pair of dogs is a pack of dogs, with selective deafness to human direction, and the noisy tendency that one barker encourages the other).

My ex’s granny had bred standard wire haired daxies, but they were already old and pretty chilled by the time I met them.

One of my grandchildren has a dappled dachshund, such a pretty little dog with a lively character. I love watching her running around.

I don’t know if it’s still there but there used to be a pub in Cornwall ( in the Trebarwith area) called The Min Pin Inn. I assume the owners owned or bred them. I do know of one that I see on walks sometimes. He’s called Teddy Pom Pom ( I never remember their owners names but make a point of remembering what the dogs are called).

A friend of mine has one as an assistant dog. She's great at getting things she drops by most importantly of all helps her mental health. Because of using a 3 wheeled walker for her a larger dog wouldn't be practical. People don't think of assistance dogs helping adults and children with mental health issues but for some especially children they can be their only friend who they can confide in . Funny enough where I used to live never saw a sausage dog but here in the north west they are very popular. Loyal , loving and fearless is how my friend describes her friend and helper.

Whippets are very good for autistic children as they very rarely bark. I’ll always remember seeing a hearing dog for the deaf for the first time; it was in a Woolworths back in the day when we still had Woolworths. A friend of my daughters used to train them.

I've never owned one but have known a couple which were Nice dogs.
But.... why oh why do I constantly hear people refer to them as '.dash hounds'?
Most of us,.I'm sure know that the name is german for badger dog. Dachs = badger
Hund = dog.

I found out a while ago from a library
book about Canines that Dashounds were originally bred for hunting
Badgers of all things!
So in reality, they're in fact
ruddy Badgerhounds! 😶

I and some of my daughters have always had dachshunds.
Please don’t use the American word Doxie, which means a prostitute in English and if you own them please learn how to spell and pronounce Dachshund.
They are being bred in strange colours now, some of which carry serious genetic health problems.
They don’t like strangers and are liable to bite.

That's interesting MayBee70 they are not such a popular breed for some reason. My own two dogs are mixed breed rescues and much loved. I would love a min Pin though.

I was on a sighthound walking yesterday and someone was saying how well Dachshunds get on with Whippets and Greyhounds which is interesting given that my whippets breeder now breeds Dachshunds too.

My only reservation about dachshunds is that they have in-bred achondroplasia. This is obviously not their fault and I believe corgis are the same. Surely this must lead to health problems particularly with their backs.

Dachshunds are suffering from the over popular bug. They are being bred with even shorter legs. They’re hounds not pocket dogs so many don’t lead the lives their sturdy ancestors did . Dogs bred to work continue to need a job. That need is best met playing to breed needs but that often isn’t possible of course. So getting the to ‘work’ eg sit wait at doors, for food etc gets them thinking and bonding 🐶
