We didn't have any plums last year, hoping for a better crop this year but it won't be many.

Ah yes, the Vale of Evesham. My Mum insisted the best plums came from there. Sounds like a good place to grow everything.

The best plums come from the tree in my garden according to my neighbours.
Plump, sweet, juicy and above all, free.
Not near the Vale of Evesham.

Isn’t it much the same, though like most things if it’s grown locally it can taste better as it’s probably fresher.

No, vegetables and fruit can taste differently according to the types of soil etc.

Of course, fresher is better too.

Not us. When you’ve had to fill water tanks appropriately every week you never ever take it for granted.

Am I correct in thinking th ebest comes from Norfolk/Lincolnshire?

No!

The best asparagus comes from the Vale of Evesham in Worcestershire in fact, followed closely by the Wye Valley. 😀

When the recent asparagus season started I thought oh good, I love British asparagus. We have our groceries delivered now as I no longer drive, so I ordered some from Ocado. Imagine my dismay when it was delivered and it was from abroad. Asparagus is grown in the county next to ours for goodness sake. I made sure that I checked my next delivery. Far superior, and British.

There is no Asparagus as good as British grown Asparagus. Am I correct in thinking th ebest comes from Norfolk/Lincolnshire? I have tried growing it, but without much success.

I was surprised and delighted to find English watercress in store yesterday. It is at the height of the season for English watercress, but usually I find it imported from Texas! The pack I bought was probably grown less than 30 miles from here.

Oh Allira please! The number of times I’ve been told that just because I choose not to eat animals.

Yes but you won’t have been told that nearly so often as vegans go on about not eating animals.
And you’ll ignore it because it doesn’t match what you want to do.
Cows produce gases because they are vegan, so . . .

I once pulled up a pair of carrots, cosily entwined like a pair of young lovers. So sweet!

Each to their own.
And shouldn't be pressurised into feeling guilty.

It has been found that plants cry when harvested. They don't have nervous systems but emit signals to warn nearby plants of danger.

Treat your cabbage with respect.

I wish I could understand how people who eat meat, don't think of that animal's last moments just before slaughter. The fear, the powerlessness; how do people put that out of their minds and eat the meat?
I'm not trying to be political or disruptive or anything, I just wish I could understand.

I just feel, rightly or wrongly, that this is just how the food chain works.

Almost all animals eat other animals in the wild.

I agree that slaughter houses are abhorrent and I always try and buy free range animal products.

I can be totally honest with and say I like meat, cheese and eggs, they are a stable part of our diet at home, I also have no problem with having vegan meals now and again, but I enjoy a very varied diet and don’t wish to change it.

Each to their own.

When they are ripe they are slightly soft to the touch ( avocados) I wouldn’t open them before that. We eat them often spread on bread instead of butter. I add a bit of salt. If you use half, keep the seed in the other half and cover with cling wrap in fridge and it should keep a couple of days.

Allira Tue 24-Jun-25 09:54:48

On top of that you know if a banana is ok to eat but I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve opened an avocado only to find it isn’t ripe.
Maybee they're not great here, but best kept in the fruit bowl. Even those that say 'ripe and ready to eat' need a few extra days.
Then they often go brown very quickly.

It's odd, isn't it, we live on a planet which is over 70% water, constantly recirculating, some areas receiving more than they need and others none, we seem incapable of managing the resource well. Oil, gas, can be transported across continents, under the sea, but water? We take our chances!

Allira Tue 24-Jun-25 09:48:42

They sell Chinese grown garlic here.

They sell it in UK supermarkets too, nanna8!

I think you need to graft avocado seedlings to ensure they will bear fruit, so I am advised by an expert 😀
Australian avocados are far superior to anything bought here.

nanna8 Tue 24-Jun-25 09:18:52

They sell Chinese grown garlic here. Madness. It has very little flavour compared with the home grown variety. It is cheaper but you need about 6 cloves as opposed to just one to get any flavour. Most of our fruit and veg is still, at this time, home grown though. I chuck avocado seeds in the garden and a few have sprouted but the trees don’t fruit, too cold I suppose.

Comment on the post about Cows and Cow farts killing the planet.

,Advice. Don't stand too close to a large cow that ha had a bigeal!!!!

Their methane ejections have been a cause of concern for many years.

Perhaps we could run power plants on the methane the prodice snd get the Cows to suck
on Monster size Polo Mints.

WithNobsOnIt Tue 24-Jun-25 01:20:10

Before l receive a good telling off from people who know bettter

I mistakenly typed in de riguer by mistake.

De rigueur?

WithNobsOnIt Tue 24-Jun-25 01:09:20

Lots of good points and facts here.

But nobody has mentioned the death of the local green grocer shop, in most areas over the last couple of decades

They bought a lot of food grown in the UK through large Town and City Centre Wholesale markets

You may still find loose fruit snd veg, as an add on to shops in areas with tradtional long established immigrant popolations live
.

Besides all the exotic stuff. They sell a reasonable range of bog standard UK style fruit and veg at deent cprices.

Then we have the Virtue Signallng, really overpriced Organic Shops. You know, Save The Planet. Workers Coops Man! Whch are De Riguer to be seen in.

You know the ones where they sell a massive range of expensive, alcoholic drinks.Re wines and spirits. But not milk and dairy products.

Which they deem to be evil and well beyond the pale. But not pale ale.
Ho ho.

As s single person l really miss being able to small quantities if loose fruit and veg. Rather than large pre packaged family amounts.

Also frozen fruit and veg has really inproved over the years and sometimes use UK produce in seseason

Probably because I can afford to eat bananas every day but an avocado is an occasional treat. I only ate my first avocado a few years ago.On top of that you know if a banana is ok to eat but I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve opened an avocado only to find it isn’t ripe. I think we all take water for granted, too. I was just thinking about the excellent documentary on iplayer about buffalo. Crazy the they were wiped out, even though they lived happily on the American plains, and were replaced by European cattle which didn’t confused. Methinks Darwin’s theory of evolution means that we’re doomed as a species if we don’t learn a few lessons.

Allira Sun 22-Jun-25 13:03:22

But just think how nutritious they are compared to other foods.

Strange, isn't it, how everyone takes bananas for granted, almost a staple food but avos?

Air miles I assume. Maybe they need a lot of water, too?

They do, a lot and the growing of them depletes the soil.
