Older your car is,the more expensuve upkeep becomes and when you come to sell it's worth next to nothing....I got new car last year,hybrid...love it and a lot cheaper to run. I had my previous car for 9 years abd another one for 12 years. This is only 2nd time I've had a new car since learning to drive,51 years ago! Love it as I have arthritis, what a difference it makes!

How Old Is Your Car
(120 Posts)Do you still have it because you love it, or because you can't afford a younger model, mine is a 18 year old Renault Clio, in great condition, I keep it because I love it, but also I can't afford a newer one anyway lol
All you people who 'love' your cars! I wish I found it so easy to find a fulfilling relationship!
Gummie
My Ford Fiesta is a 67 plate. I've had 'minty' since new and no plans to change her. I've pondered changing and even looked but nothing I see is better than her. She's got lots of bells and whistles that are 'extras' on other cars.
May well be worth more than you paid for it
I have a 2005 BMW 325i rag top. I love it and don't want to part with it. It's a smaller engine size than my previous BMW but I wanted a rag top before I gave up driving :-) Not ready to give up driving yet :-)
Two weeks ago we bought a BMW X1, it's an Automatic and I'm looking forward to driving it but I'm waiting until DH has got all the modern tech bits sorted before I drive it properly. The last time I drove an automatic was back in the late 80's 90's (Jaguar XJS company car) and things have moved on since then :-)
We have a 2007 VW Touareg diesel bought from the original owner. At the time the government were pushing them as better for the environment than petrol. We bought it as our forever car as it’s great for me to slide in and out of, our lads range between 6’2 & 6’4 so roomy for them. It holds my wheelchair in the big boot space and tows like a train.
We won’t replace her until she dies because I believe that keeping cars on the road is more environmentally friendly that buying new every few years.
My last car was over 20 years old when I sold it, I had to get a new one to be able to drive in the ULEZ Zone. I still miss it, it was a pleasure to drive and still in very good condition but steering problems were also starting to develop which would have been expensive to fix, costing more than the value of the car.
My new one is almost four years old now and I've only done 800 miles in total so far compared with around 3000 miles per year in my lovely old one. There is nothing wrong with the new one but I simply don't get as much pleasure from driving it.
My husband's car was even older, 25, and he got rid of his because of ULEZ too. Like GrannyGravy's DH, my husband has bought himself a "beast" of a car which he loves beyond all reason. Twice when we have been in petrol stations he has been approached by young men, obviously "Petrolheads", who said words to the effect of "Nice car mate" - he's found his tribe!
My car is 17 years old and I love it and have done since I got it. I probably won’t buy another one, as I don’t drive enough to justify spending 000’s of pounds on another one.
My car is 8 years old a Kia picanto. My last car was a Picanto too and lasted 13 years before it packed up. Sold it to webuyanycars and its back on the road tax mot and insurance with a new owner Unbelievable
My car is just 3 years old. A lot of backstory to it. DH was going into Hospice for pain control though I knew he would not come home. 3 days beforehand he decided it would easier to trade in both our cars and just have one in my name rather than me having to sell his car later. He had been looking on line I suspect for nake and models. We ventured to 3 showrooms but all had waiting lists. Last one had a car that had had a reservation but then cancelled day before. I wasn't keen on it and prefered another model. But, I had pointed out by DH I'd have a problem getting a wheelchair over the 'lip' on the boot. Of course I couldn't say but I won't need to do that. Garage organised everything so I could have car 1 day before taking DH to Hospice. That was the total of DHs experience in the new car, drive home from garage then to Hospice the next. I hated the car for some time but just had to accept as now way could I trade in without losing quite a lot of money. Then I reminded myself DH chose it.
10. Clean and reliable Skoda , economic, can take the dog in comfort and lots of hobby/ DIY/ garden crap ( sacks of horse manure, seaweed) in its stride.
We have a great service garage who gives excellent advice on the car's state of health. We won't change it until we have to.
My Corsa is 2004 plate so 21 years old with only 48,000 on the clock. It’s just passed MOT but quite a few advisories. I would like another Corsa as it has served me well over the years but I’m 72 and don’t want to spend on a new one. I will look for a second hand low mileage one.
19 yr old Peugeot 206 CC Convertible 40k on the clock, love it and have no plans to replace it
I have a 13 year old VW Polo. Still going strong. It gets serviced regularly, but I only do about 3000 miles a year
I haven't got a car. I don't drive and can't afford one. My husband's is 19 years old
I drove my brand new car from the showroom yesterday! It's a Ford Puma. My old Fiesta was five years old but I was beginning to throw money at it so the time was right to upgrade.
Trouble is, the newer models want to tell you how to drive!
You have great taste Crossstitchfan 😃😎
I have a 21 year old Nissan Micra! It's the third I've had of that model - so reliable and the keyless entry rocks!
My Fiesta is 14 years old, I’ve had it for 12 years. I’m happy with it but wish the boot was bigger. I have to put the back seats down to get my rollator in the boot. My DDs want me to get a car that’s higher because they think it will be easier for me to get in and out of,but the boot lip will be higher too and it will be difficult to lift the rollator in! I’ll stick with it for now!
MrJ has an 18 year old Kia Sportage, me a Skoda Karoq, nearly 5, his car is a tad untidy as it’s a work horse for his job.
Our 26 year old Volvo estate rumbles on, and will probably be my last car - when it finally dies, I will start taking taxis.

Could you get a rollator in a higher boot car using a ramp like used for (older) dogs.
My little Red Rocket *Suzuki Splash) is 17 yrs old
My dad bought it me 3 yrs ago it only had 19,000 miles on the clock.
Plenty of room inside, seats let down and it becomes a mini estate car, I can get 8ft pieces of wood in it.
I have a ten month old Toyota CHR plug in hybrid and I love it. Took a while to learn what all the bleeps meant though.
My car is a 21 year old Jaguar X-type, beautiful to drive, gives me no trouble maintenance-wise, sails through MOTs and I hope sees me out for my car needs. Called Her Grace (or Gracie for short) because I saw a review describing them as having grace and pace, and because initially I felt she was looking down her aristocratic bonnet at me! I have had her approx 10 years.
Equally as esteemed and a joy to ride, is my 26 year old motorbike, a Yamaha Dragstar, called Wicked, because the first time I rode her after my first smaller bike and opened the throttle, my delighted reaction was 'wicked'! I have had her nearly 18 years.
When my last car died at the age of 18 I replaced it with a 8 year old one of the same make, just the next model. It is now 17 years old so every year I worry it may be its last. I try to keep a small fund in savings to replace it but I can't afford to do that until absolutely necessary. Besides, having had a similar car for over 20 years it does feel like an old pair of slippers - familiar and comfortable if a little scruffy! It is a large estate car which has had many uses over the years. I've helped both my children with house moves and often get asked to help friends transport large items. It is great when I go camping as everything fits in easily, but I probably should get something smaller next. I just hope the decision isn't forced on me too soon.
