I have just back home from my weekly visit to a friend just a few weeks younger than me.
We are both rapidly approaching 88.
On Monday she almost fell victim to the scam about applying for the WFA.
She said the site looked so genuine and official.
She filled in all the details including bank details !! and then something told her to check.
She rang her bank and after an hour’s probing and questioning it was sorted.
She feels very foolish and only told me to warn me.
Her D is very cross with her.
Please warn anyone you feel may be vulnerable.
There are no words to describe how I feel about these evil people.

They are, aren't they.
They're on to the latest way to scam people straight away.

Even an astute friend got caught, luckily just the 'cost' of a visa which is available free, not his whole bank account emptied.

The big problem is you can warn and warn people but sadly 😥 it doesn’t help.
Did anyone see the scam intercepters listening in to an obviously elderly lady being scammed.
When Nick got to speak to her personally and told her who he was and what he did she said oh yes, I always watch your program
But some people would rather believe the lovely young man from India called Nigel 🤦🏼‍♀️ than her friends and family 😥

These scammers are beyond clever!
I have made a point of watching Scam Interceptors on tv and find it very helpful. They teach you about common, and not so common, scams and how to avoid them.
I used to work in a bank many years ago, then I had my own (very small) internet business. I soon learned how devious and clever scammers can be. After that, when the children were more independent, I was a Border Force officer, which was my career until I retired. I am not saying this to boast, show off, or anything like that. What I am saying is, even with those careers, all of which taught me a lot about fraud, scammers, and other low-life who are after my money, I have very nearly fallen for scams a couple of times. The scammers are so convincing, and so clever, it is hard not to be taken in.
If someone with my experience and training can nearly be taken in, it must be very hard for people without those advantages to keep a clear head and not fall for the blurb!

What is the WFA? I only ask so that I am aware of the details of this scam. I did Google it but only came up with the Womens' Football Association, World Federation of Advertisers and Wood Floors and Accessories.

V3ra Wed 02-Jul-25 17:57:55

Magenta8 it's the Winter Fuel Allowance.

Keep getting texts from unknown website saying credentials needed

Magenta8 Wed 02-Jul-25 19:11:47

Thanks V3ra. Of course it is, I just couldn't think what it was. Must be the hot weather and old age.

I find it deeply depressing and shocking that scammers deliberately target the elderly, do they have no conscience?

FoghornLeghorn Wed 02-Jul-25 19:25:09

It does look very much authentic. It asks for either debit or credit card details to enable payment. I received this and immediately deleted it but they are certainly persistent as I received a follow up message around a week later saying I should respond asap or may lose my WFA!

My friend received the message on Monday saying that that was the last day to apply which is what panicked her.

The most recent one I’ve had and nearly fell for was a warning that an ANPR camera had flagged up that my car was not taxed and I needed to click on the link provided so I could show proof that I had paid or was paying monthly.

I went to the DVLA website instead where you can click on, Is My Car Taxed, enter the reg number and it tells you immediately whether or not you are taxed.

I deleted the scam post but have had another one since then - also deleted.

You have to be on your guard all the time. I’ve also had the WFA one but was instantly suspicious because it’s always paid automatically if you qualify.

None whatsoever.
The elderly are often easy targets.

I have recently had the Parking Fine scam. Must admit I did think ohh heck where have I parked recently!

The world today is terrifying!
My rose-tinted glasses fell off about 3yrs ago, when my husband & I were targeted by a couple of low- life's who tried to steal our dog whilst
we were visiting the cemetery!
Since then I trust no-one or nothing.
"Stop the world I want to get off"😶

I always considered myself scam proof!

This week I booked flights with Jet 2,there was a problem with the payment,to cut a long story short I was contacted by a “Customer Service Rep”,then called by her “supervisor “.I so nearly fell for it,had it not been for the fact I was having difficulty hearing,I would have fallen for it.

This came about because I posted on the Jet 2 Facebook page as I was so annoyed, never again!

Be vigilant folks.

Thank you for these warnings. The scammers are getting very good at imitating the appearance of genuine websites. I was nearly taken in by one that looked totally like my bank's.

Marg75 Thu 03-Jul-25 12:55:08

I had the one about car tax, I'd only renewed on line a few weeks before but had to think about it and check my bank app.

I recently told someone he was likely to get scammed when he got older, as he starts falling for some things even now.

He said "well I am bound to do somethings wrong when I am older".

He didnt seem to comprehend the significance, if he really falls for one.
