Trampled

There have been several similar incidents in Zambia recently.
Maybe they need to tighten their regulations.

A friend of mine is just back from a safari holiday and said they were repeatedly warned not to stray outside the ranch where they were staying. On one trip, the jeep got a puncture and they had to wait until another jeep came from the ranch so those staff could stand guard while the wheel was changed. In the case in question, the elephant was protecting her calf - natural behaviour.

She was probably protecting her calf and who can blame her.

Nature being nature. For tourists to get so close to an elephant and its calf, is asking for trouble. They may be enormous animals but can move very quickly for their size.

I saw the headline of Facebook and I believe it said the tourist was on foot. I don’t think any safari type experience should be on foot. When I was young my dream job was to work with the elephants at London Zoo. Years later I spoke to one of their keepers who told me how incredibly dangerous they are ( I think a keeper was killed soon afterwards).

The mother elephant had a calf, she was protecting it.

I don't know what has happened here, but I do recall signs in Yosemite instructing people not to feed bears, or attempt to take a selfie with one (!)

I totally agree with this. We are invading their territory the same as when people unfortunately get attacked by sharks we are invading their territory as well…

People over sentimentalise animals these days- nature isn't soft and cuddly, sometimes it is arbitary and viscious, and so sometimes wild creatures should be left alone and not be a tourist attraction or an accessory for social media influencers...

Yesterday I was out with friends and for the first time this summer saw a wasp, then another, and another until it became obvious there was a nest nearby. Despite being constantly perstered by them my friend insisted they were harmless and lovely and got a bad press, even when they were diving into her glass of cider. Yes, a few minutes after my friend left I was stung and it remains painful today...
so much for them getting a bad press!

It's always a risk being around wild animals and it's up to people to ensure they keep themselves safe as far as I am concerned. I don't thing elephants normally attack people so it's probable they got too close to a baby elephant.

Despite all the warnings in Yellowstone about bear and bison attacks and the danger from hot springs I regularly see videos of people getting up close to get selfies. One recently showed a woman almost petting a huge bison, who was fortunately having a doze in the heat and munching the grass.

The humans are of course no question So sad but so mad to wander in their territory
