cumbrianmale i m so glad you enjoyed doing what you are doing you maybe younger than many on here !!!
I still work / volunteer 20 hours a week I keep an allotment going, I do my own and my daughter garden I swim in the sea and I walk (no car) but …..in the evenings I want to sit down slob out and watch my favourite programmes which just happen to be on the main channels
Of course I can avoid the sports by channel hopping no one’s saying we can’t and of course there are other freeview channels (which often aren’t up to much) but why can’t the sport use a different channel and leave us to just enjoy our favourite programmes on the correct night and at the correct time

I can't stand football, have no interest in tennis, but surely people don't just rely on BBC One, BBC Two and ITV1 for programmes. It's not 1981 and you can avoid all these sports totally if you want.
Me, seeing the weather had picked up, caught an early morning train to Edinburgh, spent several hours visiting the Royal Yacht Britannia, the Ocean Terminal, Calton St and Princes St. I'm off work and this is my way of avoiding sport I don't like.

I often feel BBC has turned into a sports channel.Football, women's football, tennis at the moment everywhere.

There's plenty on BBC iplayer.

There is plenty on there but I find either I've already watched it or I'm not really interested in it. I suspect I'm not alone in that.

Dottydots Mon 07-Jul-25 18:33:55

I'm 83 and still pay for mine. Am I missing something?

JamesandJon33 Mon 07-Jul-25 17:39:42

Babamaman I’m eighty and still have to pay for my TV licence !

MollyNew Mon 07-Jul-25 17:33:02

It's only for a few weeks and there are so many other channels to watch, plus iplayer, or you could listen to the radio or a watch a music channel. I happen to like Wimbledon but I don't want to watch every single match and I'm not interested in womens football but I can usually find something such as a film or music while my OH is asleep on the sofa!

Mojack26 Mon 07-Jul-25 16:38:03

I love sportbut totally agree. All the regular scheduling goes out the window! I don'tknow why BBC don't have a Sport's Channel or move stuff around on BBC3 and 4 and leave 1 and 2 alone!

Babamaman Mon 07-Jul-25 16:15:55

I totally agree! Thank goodness I’m too old and don’t pay for a tv licence anymore. I know it’s summertime and all the tv channels go to sleep - but this year Saturday nights are the worst ever! All channels are taking the mickey! No respect for viewers.
Not everyone is away on holiday.
Not everyone is out partying.
Not everyone has a BBQ.
So please please channel programmers think of your audiences, respect your viewers and put on some decent programmes.
Not all the Bond films either!
Awful tv

SillyNanny321 Mon 07-Jul-25 13:49:29

I have a good cure! Planet Rock on radio & current book to read!

Dottydots Mon 07-Jul-25 10:54:37

If I'm going to see any more cricket, tennis and football being shown on tv, leaving me with no choice of a decent programme, I think I might just hit myself around the head with a cricket bat.

Another yes for Miss Marple. Seen it a few times before but it was so well done. All the props, the music, and the actors. We came across Basil a few years back as a football referee so interesting to watch him.

Even dh who likes football preferred Miss Marple.

I object to two European football teams playing at peak times—another evening of no TV.

BBC and ITV do not give a s**t about their loyal viewers.

Wimbledon fortnight is 2 weeks! There are 2 international football tournaments on at the moment. They will be over soon.
As for soaps, I've given up trying to watch evening TV normally, it does seem to be wall-to-wall soaps 52 weeks a year.

sodapop hi there! 👋 yes I got into it, and like you, I like Vicky McClure so it’s a definite to continue with, I was so grateful there was something to look at mind you ‘24 hours in police custody’ was on at the same time ( typical) so I ll get that on my iPlayer while footies on tonight

Astitchintime Mon 07-Jul-25 07:40:18

We watched the new puzzler murder drama on demand on channel 5……. watched all three episodes now. We did find it rather silly in places to be honest and I can’t help wondering if it was written by the same author as McDonald & Dodds or Professor T as it had a similar vibe to it.

sodapop Mon 07-Jul-25 07:37:24

What did you think to Insomnia BlueBelle? It held my interest and I like Vicky McClure. See what tonight brings.

ferry23 Mon 07-Jul-25 07:32:52

The Live Aid programme is worth a watch - very nostalgic.

Did The Boomtown Rats have any other notable hits other than I Don't Like Mondays? Whatever happened to Bananarama?

I had completely forgotten that they did "We are the World" in the US. And that Paul McCartney's mic failed. And apparently Geldorf never actually said "Give us the f$%^&%g money" it morphed it's way into pop culture via something else he said.

Lots of jogging of the memories from those heady times!

But we don’t all have Netflix, anyway there’s a new drama starting tonight on 4 called Insomnia so at least I can give that a try

I started watching that, but it looked rather dreary, not keen on Vicky McClure either, so switched off and went to bed to read my library book. Did it turn out to be good though?

Wished I had started watching the Live Aid programme on BBC. Will catch up with it on I player.

I might be asleep by then!! 😴

Agree land TV is diabolical especially on Sat pm.
Even Netflix is getting difficult to find anything new and engrossing. Did enjoy North Shore and Q, but struggling now.
Thank goodness for tennis. Our highlight of the year. Pass the strawberries!

Absolutely, wholeheartedly agree. We are watching re-runs of Gently on NF - so much more entertaining. There are those of us who are really, really, really not interested in sport!

Next year is the World Cup, now with 48 teams in. I'm going to book 2 weeks off work in June, so I can avoid the last two weeks of it.
