Well if I had that amount of money I would not be spending it on ridiculous handbags, I would find a way to use it to help disadvantaged people.
So would I. Like scanning machines & equipment for the local hospices.

The world’s most famous bag has just sold for a record €8.6 million at Sotheby’s Fashion Icons sale in Paris, following a bidding war reportedly involving newlywed Amazon bride Lauren Sánchez and ending with a two-minute standing ovation. It was bought by a private collector from Japan, who bid by telephone through Maiko Ichikawa, the country head of Sotheby’s Japan.
The item in question? The original prototype of the Hermès Birkin, created for Anglo-French actress Jane Birkin in 1985. With quirks including the style icon’s initials and a non-removable shoulder strap, it’s a bona fide piece of fashion history.
“There is no doubt that the original Birkin bag is a true one-of-a-kind – a singular piece of fashion history that has grown into a pop culture phenomenon that signals luxury in the most refined way possible,” says Morgane Halimi, Sotheby’s global head of handbags and fashion.”
More money than sense springs to mind! 🤷♀️
Then again, if you’ve got so much of it I suppose you want to spend it on something …. Anything. It’s just seems very sad to me. An investment maybe? Like they need even MORE money?
What do you think?

Apparently Victoria Beckham is reputed to have 100 of these bags.
Less is more I would say! As my grannie used to say to say, ‘you can only eat off one plate, drink out of one cup’. FGT

I don't think you can make an analogy between the absolutely ridiculous price someone is prepared to pay for a handbag as an individual and starving children. Admittedly that scenario is obscene as seen many times over when rulers of certain countries, misappropriate their country 's funds, squirreled away in Swiss banks, the top strata living high on the hog, whilst everyone else is eeking out an existence on subsistence level wages, Venezuela springs to mind. The late Mugabe's widow to give one example, was prone to go on massive spending sprees abroad buying frivolous nonsense like this bag when the Zimbabwian people were positively starving.
And there are children starving in the world!

So much poverty in the world and all they want to spend their money on is handbags. Pathetic.
As long as it has been earned legitimately and all due taxes paid, it is their money to spend on whatever they choose.
None of us know whether or not the buyer of this bag donates to charitable causes.

Bonkers!
What happened to the Kelly bag?
DD bought a second hand bag from eBay for £2000. I was absolutely appalled - until she sold it to some (sucker) for £4000. Actually, it was to a specialist shop who must have sold it for even more. There's one born every minute!
From reading items about general "pop"? culture I have the impression that it is routine for "run-of-the-mill" celebrities to spend thousands of pounds on one handbag.
I would literally rather kill myself than spend £4000 on a handbag. How can it be worth that much?
Has everyone completely lost their minds.
More money than sense as FriedGreenTomatoes2 has said and, indeed , as my late beloved mother used to say.
As for the original Birkin millions one..... words fail me.
It makes me want to weep.
Me too Vitra and Petra... I despair of the human race when I hear of stuff like this.. so very, very sad
Absolutely disgusting what the super wealthy spend their money on when there is so much needed to be done in this world.
All this money for a handbag. Revolting.
I believe Ostrich skin is used to make Hermes Birkin bags and they are not farmed or slaughtered humanely.
I would think (I may be wrong) that only the skin from the Ostriches' legs could be used so several Ostriches would have to die to make one bag.
You & me both Calendargirl! My comment was tongue-in-cheek really. 😁

I'm sure I remember she wanted to disassociate herself from the bag because she disagreed with Hermes practice of skinning reptiles?
We went to a crocodile farm in Australia. Naïvely I thought it was for rescued crocodiles.
No, they were breeding crocodiles to sell to firms to turn into handbags etc. Hermes, Vuitton, Gucci, Azzaia, Biagnini, Ghibli and others.
I won't go into details, but I think the crocodiles are still alive when skinned. Awful.
JB wanted her name removed from the Jane Birkin Hermès bag, but obviously the connection was too strong and it never happened.

I don’t think this bag was a copy, we were sitting in the first class departure lounge (no, not my usual spot, but it was where my friend is accustomed to sitting! and I guess she was pretty aware of what a designer bag is like, unlike me, the poor relation).

At the end of the day just stuff.
It's just an old bag - to carry stuff in.
snort Terribull you post made me proper laugh! 🤣🤣
I don’t see the appeal of multiple handbags or shoes, really. I generally have one bag which I use and use until it’s too disreputable, when I replace with something similar. Shoes have always been about comfort - to be fair, I’d pay a generous price for a shoe that never caused me any pain!
Think how this money could have made a massive difference to those in real need. An old bag described as scratched and shabby… yes it’s obscene,
It's the acquisitive side of human nature. Ancient cultures surrounded their wealthy dead with their wordly goods. At the end of the day just stuff. Going back to this the original Birkin bag a tribute to Jane Birkin in her style icon days I bet she couldn't have cared less too much about such accoutrements, she was quite natural looking with her gap tooth smile, unlike the manufacturered over processed interchangeable and stony faced Sanchez/Kardishan types. Talking of Lauren Sanchez wasn't it bad enough that the world was bored rigid by the friggin' wedding that appeared to go on for what seemed like 40 days and 40 nights, now she' turned herself into mega bag lady extraordinnaire, oh well at least she's got something nice to put her bus pass in, but it still just stuff not some remarkable elixir
I don't know what women see in these bags , I don't like them and wouldn't buy one even if I could afford it . I love my pink Angel kiss bag
I'm with Petra on this one it's absolutely obscene
