Going, going… gone! Jane Birkin’s original Hermès tote is now the most valuable handbag ever sold at auction!

The world’s most famous bag has just sold for a record €8.6 million at Sotheby’s Fashion Icons sale in Paris, following a bidding war reportedly involving newlywed Amazon bride Lauren Sánchez and ending with a two-minute standing ovation. It was bought by a private collector from Japan, who bid by telephone through Maiko Ichikawa, the country head of Sotheby’s Japan.

The item in question? The original prototype of the Hermès Birkin, created for Anglo-French actress Jane Birkin in 1985. With quirks including the style icon’s initials and a non-removable shoulder strap, it’s a bona fide piece of fashion history.

“There is no doubt that the original Birkin bag is a true one-of-a-kind – a singular piece of fashion history that has grown into a pop culture phenomenon that signals luxury in the most refined way possible,” says Morgane Halimi, Sotheby’s global head of handbags and fashion.”

More money than sense springs to mind! 🤷‍♀️
Then again, if you’ve got so much of it I suppose you want to spend it on something …. Anything. It’s just seems very sad to me. An investment maybe? Like they need even MORE money?

What do you think?

I'm sure I remember she wanted to disassociate herself from the bag because she disagreed with Hermes practice of skinning reptiles?

Obscenity springs to mind 😡

mokryna Thu 10-Jul-25 17:39:58

So sad 😞. Is that really all they can do with their money?

Was with a friend at Heathrow airport. She pointed out a lady with a particular handbag, and said ‘That bag costs £16000.!’

The ‘more money than sense’ was my answer, or in the words of Lady Bracknell - ‘A Handbag!!!’

Aveline Thu 10-Jul-25 17:42:53

Absolutely shocking waste of money that could do so much to help others. As for applauding this colossal flaunting of more money than sense well...!!

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Jul-25 17:49:02

Maybe the woman at the airport had bought it from the ‘looky looky’ men on the Costa paseos Calendargirl.

Faux ‘MK’ handbags. .. only €25!

The Spanish call them ‘blanket men’ as all their goods are displayed on a huge sheet. If the police are doing their rounds they contact one another using their mobiles and pick up the sheets corner to corner and run off!

Designer handbags have been an excellent investment over recent years.

Hopefully it will go on display and not be kept in a climate controlled wardrobe.

Apparently Victoria Beckham is reputed to have 100 of these bags.

I haven’t got one, but I wouldn’t say no if the opportunity arose.

You have to but your name on a list for the Birkin, and you can only go on the list if you are already a Hermes customer (not sure a scarf would count 😹)

mokryna Thu 10-Jul-25 18:17:02

Oh my goodness.

^Why Can't You Just Walk Into Hermès and Buy a Birkin?
Most Hermès quota bags (Birkin & Kelly) are reserved for repeat, high-spending clients. Simply walking into an Hermès store and asking for a Birkin is not^

mokryna Thu 10-Jul-25 18:19:13

enough -you need to be invited to purchase one.

Kate1949 Thu 10-Jul-25 18:25:25

How ridiculous.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Jul-25 18:30:37

Emperor’s new clothes? 🤔

Pantglas2 Thu 10-Jul-25 18:39:26

I’d have paid €8,600,000 for it …if it had a cheque for €8,599,975 made out to me inside!

As FGT says, stunning handbags in the Spanish markets - no need to spend silly money, unless you just want to tell everyone how much you paid.

Magenta8 Thu 10-Jul-25 18:40:54

Je t'aime* Hermes bag mais pas assez to pay eight point six million euros for you. (not that I have that kind of money)

*I am sure quite a few GNs remember Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg's sexy song that was banned by the BBC in 1969.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 10-Jul-25 18:47:30

I suppose it’s the difference between having an original Picasso or Gainsborough on your wall or a fake.

I know which I would opt for (bank balance permitting) the one that will increase in value not the one used to light the BBQ.

I also have a problem with the looky looky/blanket men their fakes help to fuel all sorts of illegal activities, drugs, human trafficking, fake cigarettes etc.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Jul-25 18:53:58

True GG13 and the local shopkeepers paying their rents and taxes are not impressed. Every now and again the Police swoop in. But they regroup.

I was talking to one young Somalian one holiday. (No thank you I don’t want a football shirt or a pair of dayglo trainers) and he was telling me he goes over to Spain every April till November then goes home with “much money”.
Back again the following year. They bunk up, several in a couple of rooms, split the rent to keep costs down. As I say, local shops are NOT happy.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 10-Jul-25 18:58:22

FGT2 I first went to that part 50 years ago, the looky looky men were there back then.

Same modus operandi, look outs along the paseo, no mobile phones.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 10-Jul-25 19:00:27

😮

Kate1949 Thu 10-Jul-25 19:05:07

Looky looky men in Venice in June. People were buying the bags, although I believe if you are caught buying one you will be fined.

You definitely will be in Rome, if a designer shop thinks your bag is a fake they can confiscate the bag, tip your contents into a carrier bag and off you go…

(At least you get a designer carrier bag 😹)

GrannyGravy13 Thu 10-Jul-25 19:13:05

It’s akin to putting the Rolls Royce lady on an old banger…

The only thing that springs to mind when that song is mentioned is: they both looked as if they could both do with a good scrub.

Well why aren’t I surprised? She would.
What I don’t get is, unless you have one of these bags yourself how would you recognise that someone had one? It seems pointless to me, unless you stick it under people’s noses saying, ‘Look! I have a Birkin bag’! Such pretentious snobbery!
