Girl in Union Jack dress sent home on diversity day

Many of those simmering away about the very notion of diversity in our nation(s) perhaps only know of one or perhaps two cultures other than our own, historically based on Christianity, and more than likely these would be Hinduism and Muslim and they often are conflated especially if those from this faith culture are brown skinned.
I’m certainly no expert but it is clear to me from my everyday interactions that individual Muslims for example have many different modes of dress depending on what aspects of their faith they adhere to and what their individual heritage/country of birth is.
In short they are not all always clad in black ugly shrouds in public and some particularly the younger women are beautifully made up and sometimes wear different coloured robes and matching head dress/scarves but I have never asked so don’t know of the significance of these different colours at different times, if indeed there is any🤗

I know that diversity is not just about females and what they wear but the reference by Boris Johnson about “them” looking like walking letter boxes or whatever he said is always trotted out by people first and foremost or variations on this theme.

easybee All I was saying was that although my GS would appear to me, maybe not to anyone else, to fit the the description of a Grade A Student I have never been aware of his being thus described.

It could be that my part of the country is unusual in not using this term.

Grade A is a general term used to refer to high achievers, fairly obvious I would have thought. If you read the girl's prepared speech you will see that her English attainment is definitely high. Why it should it be considered a 'SE Surrey thing' when her school is in Rugby, Warwickshire and I believe it was the father who referred to his daughter thus?

So in answer to your query 'YES, Reform wishes to quash diversity.

You mislead, giving someone a job because of their ethnicity etc, is what is being challenged, not diversity itself.

Strangely, the more that people keep insisting that we should 'have pride in the British culture' the more I feel resistant to the idea.

Secondary schools in SE Surrey, where I live, stream their pupils at Year 7 entry.
The reason for it is that teachers can tailor their lessons for the level of student ability within that class. If there was a wide mix of ability within a class with gifted, average and special needs pupils, the likelihood is that a percentage of them would learn little from the lesson. I have a GD at secondary school and it works very well. Grade A student denotes a pupil in top sets.

I have a year seven GS who is in all the top sets and he also attends extension classes, my DD has mixed feelings about this. He and his like are never referred to as Grade A Students. in reports, or anywhere else, to my almost certain knowledge. Perhaps it is a SE Surrey thing.

The point is there wouldn't be a story without the dress and the school's grossly unfair demonisation and making an example of a pupil who was absolutely interpreting the criteria as set out in the poster. The child I believe is 12 or 13 how is she supposed to understand the skewed nature of the DEI the school basically adhering to some of which is nonsense and unable to make sound judgements, Clearly their first knee jerk reaction to her dress was Britishness = bad. As opposed to children who may emanate from other cultures, cultures who condone torture, capital punishment, suppression of women, gay people = good because we are showing our range of diversity.

Wes Streeting is working with the new boss of the NHS to save money for essential services. Diversity management roles at £122k are still being advertised even though the mood of government is changing. So not just Reform moving into this area of cutbacks.

"Is this news?" Well in a normal state of affairs it wouldn't be, but it's become symbolic of a subliminal and insidious suppression of our national culture as something not to be celebrate. There is the dichotomy between that fact and extolling the virtues of multi culturism, which has in many aspects enriched our country, but simultaneously has proved to be a Pandora's Box of practices that don't accord with British values. Surely those values, shared of course by many of our western counterparts are what attracted immigration in the first place.

The school made an absolute mess of their diversity day, no British unless a tartan tie is your thing. No British English or Welsh commemoration. The line that British culture is celebrated daily doesn’t hold water as we allow various items of headwear or clothing that confirm Muslim or Jewish heritage.

I don’t see anywhere on the school’s flier that says British culture was not to be included in the ‘diversity day’.

Nor have we had the school’s side of the story. Sending the child home just for wearing that ghastly dress seems really weird to me. But we will never know the school’s side now that they have made a grovelling apology.

I’m afraid her father’s use of ‘woke’, that meaningless term of abuse which just replaced the equally meaningless ‘politically correct’, spoke volumes to me…

Are afternoon tea and fish & chips prevalent in other cultures? I can't think where.

She's a young girl trying to articulate how she feels being British. Of course there are attributes that are common among many cultures, but she's what? 11 - 12? I thought she did well and the school have now made a big mountain out of a small molehill.

Afternoon tea is quintessentially a British tradition but majority of hotels in Singapore do serve afternoon teas because of the historical connection to British colonial past. I daresay, you can get afternoon tea in hotels in Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong.

On my birth certificate, my mother was listed as a ‘British Protected Person’ although I have no idea what that means.

Many years ago, I accompanied my husband to a Christmas meal and concert at St James palace. Everyone in the audience were waving the British flags during the concert.

I said to my husband that this must be one of the few places in the UK whereby you can wave a Union Jack flag without someone getting all upset.

I read online that one student from a farming community wearing a flat cap, and a tweed coat was also stopped at the school gate.

Yes didn't those councils taken over by reform say they were going to get rid of diversity jobs( only to find there weren't any)
