I’ve just picked the first ripe tomato from the variety I’m growing this year, a heritage one called Pink Brandywine. It’s really ugly looking, all lumps and bumps, but huge——it weighs 2lb 1 oz. That will make a lot of sandwiches, tomato and Marmite are my favourite. Can any of you beat that for a whopper?

I cut into it today and made tomato and Marmite sandwiches for lunch. They were lovely. Another portion will be baked as one of the veg with tonight’s meal and there will still be half left.
One advantage of a heritage variety is that you can save the seeds knowing that they will come true, unlike hybrids. This is quite a saving when hybrid varieties cost £3-£4 a packet and you only get 6 seeds!

I bought the wrong plants this year they are small and not growing like my usual ones but I cant remember the name of my usual ones so I'll just get different ones next year. The tomatoes are small so I think it must be a cherry tomato plant and I am not keen on cherry tomatoes.

Last year I bought three tomato plants from the church, someone had grown them from seed, so no idea what they were called. They were the best tomatoes ever particularly one variety whose fruit was red and purple. I never thought to save seed and when I asked the grower what they were he said he didn’t know, it was old seed he found in his seed draw and thought he would see what happened when he planted them. ☹️.

I love the big beefsteak tomatoes, but all my family prefer the tiny cherry tomatoes.
