The favourite book thread jogged my memory of childhood days and the toys I loved as well as my books.

My teddy bear Bobby...I think he was a Merrythought one, lovely smiley face. {Mother threw him away without asking when I was in my teens!].
Bus conductors outfit.
Yo-yo.
Bouncing balls [3 against a wall]
Skipping rope, alone or with friend/s joining in.
Toy guns [with caps!].
Pea shooter.
Spud gun.
Jacks.
Marbles, I had some wonderful ones.
Stamp collection, coin collection, cigarette card collections.
Binoculars [for watching the garden birds].
Board games: Ludo, Snakes and Ladders, Draughts.

Always at a friends house using his microscope looking closely at all sorts of things or the Magic Robot game which fascinated me. I was also fond of wearing his Davy Crockett hat!
Loved playing with another friends guinea pigs in her garden/basement. She had quite a few.

The rest of the time I was on my skates for hours zipping around the neighbourhood and parks. I'd yearned for a scooter or a tricycle but wasn't allowed them, just skates.

Not a girly girl you can tell [had no time for my doll Rosie, who stayed in her cot]. When not at a friends house or at Brownies I was happier climbing in the woods/in dens or playing cricket with the boys. Great times.

Plastic high heeled mules
A doll from a doll shop on the High Street. You chose your doll and then the clothes and the lady prepared it for you. I chose a blonde doll in a blue and white striped crinoline dress and hat, Scarlett O'Hara style. She was beautiful. I gave her to my little sister when she went into hospital and the children on the ward ruined her sad

I was not a great fan of dolls. They were mostly made of hard plastic, had eyes that opened and shut and awful blonde wigs. Some of them cried "Mama" when you tipped them backwards and forwards. I preferred Teddy Bears and I had quite a collection.

I also had a fine collection of metal farm animals and farm workers. My dad made me a wooden farmyard complete with a pig sty, cow shed, stable and a pond for the ducks.

I had a hobby horse called Mr Hobbs and a tricycle called Winky.

Quite a few of my toys were actually quite dangerous. One that springs to mind was a miniature cooker, which ran on cut up fire lighters, which you could boil a tiny kettle on.

I had a doll called Flower which I made knitted clothes for. She was made of hard plastic and every so often Dad had to take her to the Doll's Hospital in Reading after her head came off! I loved that doll. There is one photo of me holding her which I will find.

Flower and me!

I was never really a girly girl, so wasn't really interested in dolls, apart from my Sindy - and that was only because she had a horse! I did love my toy horse collection though. If I remember rightly, they were made by Julip (or maybe Julep).

I loved my doll and pram, also blackboard and chalk, snakes and ladders , ludo, hated monopoly...still do. tea sets and a tiny tot store.

My Sindy doll. I absolutely loved her.

I forgot about Monopoly! My brother; sister and I would have marathon games in the summer holidays.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 27-Jul-25 13:32:59

Yes I had exactly that doll llfl. And she had visits to the dolls hospital - mostly because her eyes had gone in😮😄. I had a much loved aunt who would knit her clothes.

Yes monopoly was also a favourite game.

Tricycle with a bag at the back of the saddle.

Roller skates and being outdoors all day every day, lighting fires and cooking eggs which were eaten with bits of twig in the mix.

Just remembered I liked jigsaws and loved one I had of a farmyard scene living as I did in the suburbs.

I loved getting a new set of watercolour paints each year. As an only child I had to do many activities on my own and amuse myself. Still do!

Loved my teddy bears and still do, never a great fan of dolls. Loved Enid Blyton books, jigsaws, draughts, card games like snap, hopscotch in the street.

Bluebird (is it something about the ‘blue’ in our name) I too was an only child bit lonely wasn’t it ?
I think I was a good child as I didn’t have anyone to get up to mischief with I read a lot did my drawing and painting and I used to play games left hand against the right hand !!!

ViceVersa Sun 27-Jul-25 14:08:35

I never felt lonely as an only child, and I never envied friends with siblings either. I'm still more than happy in my own company.

AuntieE Sun 27-Jul-25 14:27:03

My dolls and teddies.

Some of them are sitting here smiling at me while I type this.

Henriette has just reminded me that her wedding veil and going away dress are still unfinished, and her bridegroom's dress uniform is minus breeches still (he is a hussar) and that one of the wedding guests is STILL minus a new hat, so I shall hurry back to the sewing table.

Dolls and teddies for me too.

escaped Sun 27-Jul-25 14:32:29

Here I am.

petra Sun 27-Jul-25 14:41:38

I wasn’t one for dolls and teddies but I don’t think my father knew this as he was always at sea but one day he arrived home from America with a walking talking doll.
She was a bit scary when she walked and swung her arms and swivelling her eyes saying i walk, I talk in an American accent.
But also from that trip I got my heart’s desire, Roller scathes with ball bearings, green rubber wheels and red leather toecaps.
I think I ( all all the kids in the street ) had the most fun with my MoBo roundabout.

You often see some of these toys on the Repair Shop programme. So lovely to see the surprise on the faces when they are restored almost like new, just leaving a few genuine imperfections.

Flower and me!

That is so sweet! I think early all photos of children in those days were pretty much like yours. All so innocent and carefree. It brought back happy memories of me and my Susie doll.
Things were so much more simple then.

Crossstitchfan Sun 27-Jul-25 15:12:35

Nearly all, not early all!

bluebird243 Sun 27-Jul-25 15:15:52

Yes BlueBelle I did feel lonely as an only child [aged 0-11yrs]...and didn't have a father either. I envied those with siblings and cousins.
But I had some lovely friends, one of whom I'm in touch with after 71 years!

Looking back though I can see the compensations: I developed a wonderful bond with my Grandmother who I spent so much time/conversation with. Now am very self sufficient and independent, like my own company and enjoy a quiet home. Live on my own now and it suits me.

The deep feeling of loneliness sometimes reappears though as my childhood certainly had an impact on me. But I'm ok. And very much hope you are too.

Fatoldlady Sun 27-Jul-25 15:21:03

My favourites were roller skates, pogo stick, stilts and of course bikes. My mum used to say I was a tomboy - not a term we hear today - and was usually to be found hanging upside down from something, or up a tree.

JamesandJon33 Sun 27-Jul-25 15:21:28

Whip and top and skipping with all the girls in the street. Didn’t like dolls much but liked drawing and reading
