Fridge pickers wear big knickers!

My bread in is out of bounds!
I bake all my own bread, mainly sourdough but a loaf has to last a week.
If I was picking at the bread in like I do the fridge my bloomers would be mahoosive!

If there's cake in the house - I can't leave it alone .
Everytime I make a cup of tea - a slice beckons me .
I drink tea all day - that's a lot of slices.
I often don't really like cake that much unless I've made it myself and yet even if it's commercially made - it's there and I can't resist .
Recently I've made a huge attempt to eat more healthily .
I'm eating a lot of fish , salad and vegetables Even so the hot weather has tempted me to buy ice cream and that's another temptation ..
I often meet my friends in Greggs and I eat the little boxes of fruit and resist buying packets of doughnuts,because I know what will happen !

Yes cake!

I haven’t really made cake on a regular basis now for years because we can’t stop eating it.

The only time I make a regular one is Christmas cake. Which piles on the pounds.

But I love baking.

I’m not so much of a snacker but I’ve a very sweet tooth and definitely need bigger knickers these days! Spotted this outside a bakers shop, where we succumbed and bought some very good cake!

That includes diabetes, blood pressure, strain on your heart and bones.

I tend to cut up fruit if I am hungry...would prefer a chocolate biscuit but seeing I diabetic .I usually eat a vana no a before bedtime.stops the leg cramps

Whitewavemark - I really enjoy baking more than eating the cake !
As I get older I'm lazy to cook properly and fill up on sweet things .
I try not to have them in the house.
Maybe I'm like my mother.
She'd rather eat crisps and chocolate than a proper meal .

If I know it’s there I can’t rest until I’ve snaffled it! Usually that half full tube of Pringles, or the last of the M and S cheese straws, or those lovely big crisp gerkins ……. Sorry, must dash! 😋

I seldom over-pick, just the odd few grapes, whatever, but when I do, I'll have 2 Muller Corner yoghurts or one big Onken, then dive into the cereals; I love the Kellogg's 8 Variety packs and can scoff 2 boxes in one dish!

Thankfully, I don't wear big knickers, so I have bragging rights on that!

Cariad - I also have a selection of clothing in different sizes .
I just can't bear to throw them away .
I was very slim and ate huge amounts until in my early thirties my thyroid failed after a long mono type illness.
It wasn't diagnosed for a long time .
I thought that that the meds would restore my svelte figure.
But it didn't.
I can be thinner if I cut out all pleasurable foods .
I used to be an eight -those clothes have long gone .
I'd be very happy to a 14 so I've kept my size 14 dresses .
Maybe one day ...

Sorry to hear that Esmay - very frustrating!

Size eight is something I never managed - my mother was "real" size 8 always - for decades. Though she did eat like a bird and she was pretty and elegant and her idea of buying a coat, for instance, was "I'll have a 3rd coat - all from Jaegar sales".

That's part of it imo - as I've got cheapie clothes for my current size (as it's temporary - it better be!) and hence a £60 coat for current size. But - for my own size (1970s size 14) I have 2 of £300 coats (one of which I've never worn - as Lockdown started and bang went my figure shortly after I'd bought them because of that Lockdown wine). I've got 3 x £200 odd jumpers (never worn) - as I got them just before Lockdown and figure going bang. Meanwhile...I'm wearing things like a £30 odd jumper and £5 charity shop jumper in current size.

It's thinking positive to keep clothes in one's own proper size imo. Telling oneself "I WILL be my own size again". That's how I look at it anyway....

Have you got an integrated health doctor anywhere near you? I'd try one of them myself (as opposed to yer "standard" type doctor) - but frustration is there is one only 10 minutes walk away from my last house (in Southern England) - but I think the only one there is in Wales is some distance away and she's got this thing in her head of "You vill eat meat - or else" and that's impossible for someone like me that doesn't/hasn't for decades.

Snacker or not, it's been a long time since my undergarments could legitimately be called " smalls".

I do think that when you get older the ìmpetus to look good diminishes .
I recall how incredibly beautiful ,slim and elegant my mother was and then she suddenly exchanged her fitted clothes fir tracksuits and high heels for slippers .
She sat on the sofa eating crisps and chocolates.
My father was begging her to come out for the evening.
Neither did she want to go on anymore holidays .
Her lovely clothes became too small .
She told me ,I've let myself go .
She was 70 .
She was in good health .
Unfortunately I'm not enjoying good health.
I have the symptoms of fibromyalgia .
I've kept my beautiful expensive clothes in the hope that one day I'll get better .

I keep a white loaf in the freezer so I can’t just gorge on it. Can now make and keep cake in the house. I started making banana bread during lockdown and managed to not eat it all at once because I was worried about food supplies. I now have a slice for late breakfast to break my nighttime fast. Probably wouldn’t be able to limit myself if it was eg chocolate gateaux. I still can’t keep crisps in the house; I can scoff packets of them in the evening. And I certainly can’t keep chocolate in the house. My wardrobe is full of clothes of different sizes and my leggings have to be labelled ( tight/ok/ bit loose) because my weight fluctuates so much. If I’m packing to go somewhere I have to check if I’m packing leggings that fit me.

You and me both - ie it's my own fault too. I did lose motivation when Lockdown started and getting it back again is something that's not happened. I was pretty cynical about Society before Lockdown - and my cynicism level absolutely shot up/stayed up with that.

My own mother basically kept up the motivation till nearly the end (ie in her early 90's). Though it was pretty much the deal between my parents that she kept her figure for instance - ie even she commented how the present my father gave her when she had her first child (ie me) was a girdle. Just a tad of a strong hint - which probably wasn't necessary anyway - as she recalled the tale of wheeling me out in my pram soon after I'd been born and someone she didnt know that well (but who had seen her during the pregnancy) asked "Whose baby is that?" (ie because she'd done her darndest not to look overweight ever (ie even during pregnancy). !!!!

Food wasnt much of a temptation to her - between lack of money and she was a (self-admitted) bad cook.

A lot of the motivation does go once one is no longer in "dating days" as I call it. A lot more went when I moved from a younger than normal average age middle-class little city to a small town in West Wales (and where it took about 2 seconds for other women who'd moved here to tell me it was a pretty normal thing here for men to move into a womans home and generally be worse off than she was - as he didnt have one of his own - and I looked around at the men and thought "Well that's obviously that for sure and certain then"). I had had a pretty good choice of men back when I was in my city and younger and so I definitely thought "No point at all now and here of even trying for a nice man in my life...."

Anyways - keep the clothes. Defo keep the nice clothes and fingers crossed you find a way to deal with that fibromyalgia. Hopefully you can get back to normal in all respects soon.

Sounds like your mother was depressed that she'd given up like that - and that's a shame. We have to try not to let depression drag us down any more than we can help - even now/especially now.

Looking back , I understand how she felt .

Covid and lock down has really changed life .I feel that most of my friends have lost their joie de vive .
I haven't given up on being slim again . I shall try harder with diet and exercise.

Yep...I'm relating to some of what you say there. My mother was indeed a bad cook and limited - even by 1950s standards. Hence I tend to be someone people turn to to ask what to do with various foods - as (within vegetarian basically) guidelines equals "You name it - and I've probably tried it" and I'm very experimental re food. There was a lot of lost time to make up for.

The mental health issues - my mother was brought up by what she told me was her mother and I wondered why she was two generations older (not one) and it turned out eventually it was because she was her grandmother really and her "older sister" was really her mother. Add that this is a line of women who didn't want to be mothers - and hence why it ended with me (as we'd got to the 1970s by then - the Pill etc). Add that she was being brought up in wartime Plymouth (ie down the bomb shelter a lot at night) and all round I can see why she was obviously somewhat traumatised. I can understand that when your own "mother" tries to give you away to that awful order of Catholic nuns when your "father" dies before you reach school age and the Freemasons (mates of her "father") obviously stepped in and did something that prevented that. There was just one photo of her before her "father" died - and there's this pretty little middle class confident-looking little girl in ringlets/hat/party outfit and looking all set-up to progress onto the "owning own house pretty darn soon/going off on cruises/etc" lifestyle her "older sister" had had when she was brought up.

The houseproud bit too (nothing was ever ever out of place or dirty) - though she did deliberately marry an armed forces man and I think that's probably why that was the case.

Marriage didn't seem to be particularly an issue to her - she had loads of boyfriends (including one fiance) before she met my father and I think she was probably the one all round that "set the tune" of things in relationships and it sounds like she could get pretty much any man she wanted and she chose my father as soon as she clapped eyes on him across the dancefloor. But I know that marriage had its frustrations - as my father got very frustrated at how she was way less intelligent than him (ie defo not intelligent) and I presume she got frustrated in the other direction ("Whoops he's just used a word I don't understand in that conversation with his daughter - I'd better shut him up" was very much the way she operated to "tone him down") - grrr and cue for buying myself bigger and bigger dictionaries when I reached adulthood in order to expand my vocabulary up to a reasonable size.

I can understand why "oomph" might well vanish - or at least ratchet down a lot - in later life if things have been hard in earlier life. Maybe running out of emotional "energy" ?? I have a theory that we all have a certain amount (differing between different people) at the outset and then "Life" may send things along that mean a huge amount of a finite amount of it gets expended and there's maybe 10 years worth of "emotional energy" gone out the door used up in, say, one year of time.

Re Lockdown - I met quite a lot of new friendly faces at that point - but lost the others I'd made in this area already...because they disapproved of me.... (thankfully I've still got my two longest-serving friends elsewhere in the country - cue for very long and frequent phonecalls).

I have a theory that a lot of people (both pro and anti Lockdown signs of the divide) have become a lot more cynical and/or depressed than they were previous to that.

Yep.....I must try harder too. Right now I'm learning a lot about having a high protein/low carbohydrate way of eating and moving towards that.
