My youngest daughter was born and has lived in France
all her life. She speaks English with a Yorkshire accent.
Its not just the genes passed on.

Another Yorkshire lass here - although I have travelled around since then I am still proud of my roots.

It is a lovely area Crossstitchfan it's a long time since I have been back though.

It was my love of the Herriot books years ago that encouraged us to visit Thirsk and the surrounding area and we were smitten! What a beautiful area, and the people we met on our travels were lovely. I love everything about Yorkshire.
We wanted to move to Yorkshire in the 80s but my husband had a specialist job here in Kent and there wasn’t any work available for hm there.
I did have relatives who lived in Scarborough, but it wasn’t the same as Thirsk!

I thought I would throw my Yorkshire jacket into the mix - purchases in York last year, tailored from wool spun and woven in a Yorkshire mill. The badge was my addition! It took me a few days to discover what was under the collar and I was tickled to death by it!

My OH was born in.Harrogate where her parents were stationed during the war in a flat over the Beaumanjay's garage. They were local Indian gentry, I think.

A friend’s mother used to call any Yorkshire puddings that failed to puff up ā€˜Lancashire biscuits’. grin

I’ve often wanted to visit the Yorkshire Dales, due to the Herriot books.

It really is quite breathtaking*Oreo*. If you ever get the chance to visit grab it, you won't regret it. We're up and around there for four days at the end of this month, can't wait.

Ere’s one fur all t’ Tykes (soz it’s a bit long):

You know you are frum Barnsley if...
At least 50% of your family used to work darn t'pit.
You can make perfect sense out of the phrase "Asthagorowttegeeus?"
You have ever gotten frostbite and sunburn in the same week.
You identify a Sheffield accent as 'Southern'.
You know what twocking is (Taking Without Owner's Consent).
'Snap' is summat you eat.
You know that a 'bag of spice' is summat kids eat.
'Summat to eight' is a meal, not the time of the day.
You know that 'Jump' is a real place.
You know that it's pronounced Dod'eth and Cud'eth rather than Dodworth and Cudworth, whilst Wentworth is what it sez on t'tin (and is proper posh).
You know that the biggest news in 1912 was that Barnsley won the FA Cup (rather than the Titanic sinking, Captain Scott's Antarctic team's bodies being found or the start of Blackpool Illuminations).
You have one word that means "Hello!", "How are you?", "What's this?", "Hang on a minute!" and "Bloody 'ell!" (Eyup!)
You know someone who was in the film 'Kes'.
You are unaware that there is a legal drinking age.
You refer to the Tykes as 'WE'.
You have gone to Jump to specifically queue up round the block for a Percy Turner's pork pie.
You've seen Kipper Jackson singing with his karaoke machine inside one of Tarn's three Greggs.
You know that the phrase "Oo war shi wi?" isn't Chinese.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Wow Lizziedrip you must live rahnd corner from me!

Here's to all fellow Yorkies from God's Own County šŸ˜‚

Everyone goes out and flings re-inforced Yorkshire Puddings at each other in celebration.

I live in Lancashire......

In which case you’d have to throw HotPot ( painful)😁 if still in the pot.

Shelflife Sat 02-Aug-25 11:52:09

Yorkshire ' girl ' here.

Greyduster Sat 02-Aug-25 10:14:39

They wouldn’t have to reinforce my Yorkshire puddings, Windmill🤣!

Michael12 Sat 02-Aug-25 05:35:03

My son-in-law is a Yorkshire lad through and through - born in York on 1st August so it’s his birthday today!

We love Yorkshire, have visited many times over the past 30+ years and will be staying there again later this month.

Daddima Fri 01-Aug-25 18:42:00

I would have sent this to my brother in Yorkshire, but he is an offcumdun.

grumppa Fri 01-Aug-25 18:29:34

Is it somewhere north of Watford?

Grandmadinosaur Fri 01-Aug-25 18:23:06

Same for me Magenta I was born in the Midlands but moved here in 1985 so have lived here longer than my home county.

Glad that my Ds and grandchildren were born here too.

Magenta8 Fri 01-Aug-25 17:49:08

I am proud to consider myself an honorary bluddy Tyke on this special day.

*You can make perfect sense out of the phrase "Asthagorowttegeeus?"*. I nearly fell out of my chair laughing when I saw that🤣! The rest of your list is spot on!

Gud int it🤣

I was born in Yorkshire but only managed to stay there for three weeks before I was taken back to London by my mother.

I have managed a couple of lovely holidays there though.

leeds22 Fri 01-Aug-25 17:08:52

Parents working in London when I was born but moved back to Yorkshire when I was 2. I generally keep quiet about not being born in Yorkshire, although it could explain why I dislike Yorkshire tea!
