Well Rosie certainly had a good stab at it.

*There’s always a snake in Paradise*- one ofmy Nan’s many idioms

“Mind you don’t cut yourself with that tongue”

also my Nanwhenshe considered us to be ‘answering back’

Oh a couple of goodies there!

" Have you seen a nose looking for a face?" One of my mothers.
Said if she felt slighted.

I fear I may have wandered ( like the Oxus) from the question.

Everything happens for a reason. No, it doesn’t.

I so agree with you on this! I look at the disasters on the News and in my opinion, they prove that it doesn’t. What reason can there be for what we see happening?
Not wanting to start an ‘is there, isn’t there’ argument, but if there is a God, what possible reason could there be for these dreadful atrocities. If He didn’t want so many people in the world, and He is that powerful, why not stop so many being born?

"To thine own self be true"
Taken out of context from Hamlet.

Mine is altered by me

"To thine own self be true"
Taken out of context from Hamlet.

"To thine own self be true
And it must follow as the night the day
Thou canst not then be false to any man"

From Hamlet
Polonious' advice to his son Laertes who is off to university.

‘An ounce of help is worth a pound of advice.’

Pre-metric quote, still relevant though.

Granddog36 Thu 07-Aug-25 19:55:06

Never judge another man till you have walked 1,000 miles in his moccasins.

Give a man a fish and you give him a meal.

Teach a man to fish and with any luck, you can get rid of him for the entire weekend.

Sticks and stones may break my bones but names can break my heart.

Stop reaching for the stars and failing to see the flowers at your feet.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift = that is why it is called the present

It is on the debris of our despair that we build our character.

Never accept 2nd best
Written in a book given to me by my late karate sensei.
I have now arranged for it to be on my kickboxing necklace

On the other hand, 'Don't make the best the enemy of the good'. Competition can go too far and ruin everything and everyone except the outright winner.

H L Mencken (the 'Sage of Baltimore', probably between WW1 & 2) :- "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public".

He also (in a real moment of clairvoyance) stated "On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.".

Wow! I must look up Mencken.

I've never heard of this saying before but it's great.
I might nick-it as there's often a "Snake in my paradise." AKA DH.

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light."
- Matthew 11.28-30

This really hit me when I read it as an enquirer into Christianity 37 years ago, and I have loved it ever since. I found it true.

‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you’ has stuck with me and I hope I do it too.

Wise advice ..

Or….. do unto others before they do you😁

Not sure if these have been mentioned but;

1. Never make a permanent decision based on a temporary emotion.

2. "Hell is empty and all the devils are here"
