Since 2019 there has been a 91% rise in the number of attacks on nurses and other staff in A&E departments. There were 4,054 during 2024. Long waits in A&E are said to be the main contributory factor.

Attacks have involved numerous hittings and punchings and slamming nurses against a wall. Also threats of acid and gun attacks.

I trained in London in the 1960’s,we experienced very little abuse from patients or visitors. But the abuse we suffered from Ward Sisters,Consultants and especially the Night Sisters was horrific.i have one friend who still suffers mentally from the way we were treated.A lot of girls left because of it.

My son is a Registered Nurse and gave it all up,he wasn’t prepared to put up with the abuse and poor wages. What a waste of his training.
