Do you like silence?

I was just wondering how many of you do things with no background noise simultaneously? So perhaps crafts, or cooking, or housework etc…with no radio, music or tv …or anything else going on.
When I was younger, there wasn’t much silence, with family and a busy life etc. Now, there could easily be, but in an odd way, I really want it and yet I’m frightened of it. I do live a quietish life but I think I’m worried that if I get used to it, the external world will eventually become too much, leading to me being intolerant of any noise at all…if that makes sense..

I love silence and my own thoughts. I have several hobbies and always but always work in complete silence. It is joyous. I am never still and silence is my companion.

As I've gotten older, there are times when I do crave silence especially after a working day...I think my choice of work very much influences that.

When I'm off or at weekends etc, I do tend to have music on as I potter around, simply because I do love my music!

I’m the youngest member of a large and noisy family. I love silence.

I surround myself in silence due to having developed Hyperacusis. I've grown to love and appreciate silence.

Loathe silence, takes me back to my childhood when parents’ rows would last for days the silence was scary. Need voices, music even when in bed!

Do I like silence?

YES, YES, and more YES.

Though, actually, there is very rarely silence even in quiet places. I'm happy to hear birdsong, the wind in the trees, the noise of running water, baas from sheep, etc. I do not need canned noise of any kind. I tend to prefer music live – even the best recordings are not as good. Even (especially!) the Goldberg Variations or The Art of Fugue can be irritating if not consciously and purposefully listened to.

For me, listening to music or a podcast is a deliberate action and requires my full attention.

I have Tinnitus too, as so many do. I don't think of suffering from it, it's just there and luckily, mostly, I can zone it out. In fact, I only really hear it when I come across the word! smile

I love silence… Please don’t be afraid of it, Stillness - trust yourself as I think you will know when it is time to put the radio on to hear some voices/music, or head out into the world for a short while.

I dislike silence very much I like noise (nice noise preferably) silence to me is the morgue, the coffin, being dead or in a cell on my own, I never have silence, even at night I go to sleep to my radio, silence to me is a waste of time that needs filling As an only child I used to often play in quietness and now I fill it all the time even when I go swimming in the sea on my own I find someone to talk to if I m in a group and no one says anything I m uncomfortable so have to think of something to say I ve tried meditation and I just can’t do it I find it so boring (another tinnitus sufferer)

Grannybags Wed 13-Aug-25 15:27:56

I have Radio 4 on in the background if I’m doing housework or cooking etc, unless my DH is around. He talks over it so I switch the radio off as I can’t switch him off! 😁

We have 5 Alexas which play quietly most of the time. Also helps with my tinnitus.

I don't like silence. I like having the radio on. I like hearing nearby children playing and I like the sound of traffic.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 13-Aug-25 16:04:09

Yes I do like silence.

Surprised at the amount of people suffering from tinnitus - you’d think something would have been found to cure it by now.

I long for silence . I am on a busy main road , constant 24hr traffic . Sirens etc . I never have total silence even with the double glazing . Recently spent 5 days in an isolated cottage . Oh the silence was so beautiful . Waking to silence apart from birds . It was wonderful

JamesandJon33 Wed 13-Aug-25 16:26:42

I love silence, need silence and also need to be on my own now and then.

HowVeryDareYou2 Wed 13-Aug-25 16:29:10

Jaxjacky

The only reason I don’t like silence is because it highlights my tinnitus, so the radio is usually on in the background.

Me too

Visgir1 Wed 13-Aug-25 16:38:19

No I find it disconcerting. I always have music on the radio on.

lixy Wed 13-Aug-25 16:50:11

I prefer to have the radio on especially when cooking (radio 2 usually) or knitting (radio 4, or a sounds drama).

OH prefers silence and finds noise distracting; radio off for him especially when doing a crossword. I had to put a tiny solar powered flower ornament away in a cupboard the other day because its clicking was distracting apparently.
Not quite sure how we have managed to stay married for 40+ years!

Bellasnana Wed 13-Aug-25 16:56:27

I love silence but I also like a bit of music on while I get ready for the day. I listen to playlists on YouTube as I don’t have an Alexa and don’t like the radio.

I’m also shocked by the number of you suffering with tinnitus. 😞

Norah Wed 13-Aug-25 17:12:04

Yes, I prefer silence.

BlueBelle Wed 13-Aug-25 17:22:20

I don’t consider it suffering Bellasnanna it’s just something that’s there and I can forget it a lot of the time only if I think about do I realise it’s still tinging away in the background

Stillness Wed 13-Aug-25 17:24:21

Thanks for the replies. It inspired me to sew in silence this afternoon and I enjoyed every moment of it.

M0nica Wed 13-Aug-25 17:43:56

I am sitting in silence now. Typing this response on my Fire, s o no keyboard noise and listening to the sound of the wind in the trees and the occasional bird.

Wyllow3 Wed 13-Aug-25 18:02:28

yes, yes, and yes!!!!!!!.

I have tinnitus for 30 years but somehow learnt to by pass the tinnitus and listen to the silence. (the tinnitus is regular and if it increases through stress then relax and it goes back))
