Butter dishes

Now that butter is so expensive, why are there no small lidded butter dishes available. I’ve searched high and low but can’t find any, other than the dishes that hold a whole pat. I’m sure I’m not the only one who only puts out enough butter for one day? Anyone got any ideas please?

My daughter and I both have 'butter bells'. Google it there are lots of different types mine is glass but she has a lovely ceramic one.

I've never seen a small one. Probably because butter is out of fashion so butter dishes aren't used so much now.

I cut the butter pat in thirds and put one third in the dish. We keep it in a nice cool cupboard and it lasts us a couple of days or so. We have two butter dishes though, so one is in the wash when the other is in use.

Are butter bells the same as French butter dishes, which have water in them to keep the butter cool?
I use my full size lidded butter dish and cut a small section of butter each day. smile

The butter hasn't gone off even in the very hot weather.

Butter out of fashion! Never heard that before. We have a standard metal butter dish and keep it in a cupboard unless it is very hot when it goes in the fridge. Elder son asked for one for his birthday (and a toast rack) so I bought him a metal and wooden one.

Why would butter 'go off'? It's fat so not likely to grow Food spoilage organisms. What it will do, over time, is go rancid but that's not an overnight event

Catering suppliers might have small dishes

tanith Sun 17-Aug-25 14:03:29

Aldom yes they are French in origin i think my daughters has water butmine doesnt both work well though.

It can go rancid in the heat.
Ours is in the fridge for now, in its dish.

This one is 10cm long, from Tesco online

Butter is certainly not ‘out of fashion’. 😳. We use this small one in the warm weather and a larger one in the Winter.

Patsy70 Sun 17-Aug-25 14:26:49

This is it!

NotAGran55 Sun 17-Aug-25 15:09:26

Put some butter on a saucer and invert a cup over it.

Allira Sun 17-Aug-25 15:13:34

Ours doesn't seem to go off.

Out of fashion? No, but certainly there doesn't seem to be the choice there was a while ago and those homogenised spreads with additives fill the shelves.

Aldom Sun 17-Aug-25 15:17:34

What a great idea NotaGran.

loopylindy when I used the expression 'go off' regarding butter in hot weather, rancid is what I meant.
As we're not in Pedants Corner I didn't think it mattered. Most people would know what I meant. smile

I make my own butter and use Tupperware type containers to freeze/refrigerate.

Primrose53 Sun 17-Aug-25 16:43:35

I use an insulated stainless steel one from Lakeland Plastics.

I have never used anything but butter. I have never use margarine or whatever they call the stuff made from cooking oil.

Half pound in the butter dish and kept in a cool pantry. lasts weeks without problem.

Aely Sun 17-Aug-25 17:42:28

I have one of those old fashioned "cut glass" lidded butter dishes. I live on my own, so on the rare occasions I use it I just put enough butter for a couple of days in it.

Unless I have found some really good bread (very rare) to put it on, I use Buttersoft - a butter/rape oil spread - from Sainsbury's straight from the fridge.

I got a basic butter dish from Asda a couple of years ago.

Ooh…..I like that idea! Thanks NotAGran

Google "Nisbets" for anything kitchen.
I know they carry several butter dishes.

I have three with lids.
I put half a pack out at a time. It doesn't go off.

All but one of my adult children use butter dishes too. I would say more people use them than you think.

Ours stays out in the butter dish.

It never lasts for weeks as it's gone fairly quickly!

Allira Sun 17-Aug-25 22:00:10

My DC use butter too, not adulterated spreads.
Olive oil as well.
