Butter dishes

Now that butter is so expensive, why are there no small lidded butter dishes available. I’ve searched high and low but can’t find any, other than the dishes that hold a whole pat. I’m sure I’m not the only one who only puts out enough butter for one day? Anyone got any ideas please?

Not everyone uses spreads such as "I can't believe it's butter (because it's not!)"

Lots of people do though, which is why I said butter is out of fashion- and I mean generally, not on GN. Nearly everyone I know uses Flora, Can't Believe It's butter or a veg/vegan version. I think nutritional guidelines still advise people to steer clear, sadly.

We've never used anything but butter and never will. One DiL tried to change DS from butter to a spreadable and it nearly caused a divorce 😅

😁

My DC all use butter and think the spreadables are adulterated rubbish!

I doubt you will want to follow this example! But we had a holiday in Iceland a few years ago and more than one hotel served fairly small portions of butter on large smooth dark pebbles! `i found some similar pebbles on Icelandic beaches and they are easy to wash afterwards. But not a good bet for keeping butter over several days of course.

On the butter theme, I am infuriated with the move towards 200g slabs of butter. My recipes tend to be based on 250g, so am avoiding the smaller packs. I just hope the manufacturers do not all follow this trend.

Our butter is fine in a Pyrex type butter dish.

We had a stainless steel one but DH likes to soften the butter in the microwave in the winter so I bought a plain ceramic one.

Lots of people use them grin. I'm sure they do end up in charity shops, but so do plates, and I doubt people wonder who uses plates as a result.

Lizzielogs Mon 18-Aug-25 13:58:06

I've seen them in charity shops and wondered who uses them these days, but I usually buy spreading butter in a tub rather than a block.
You could try asking in charity shops as well as just looking them over in case they have some donated but not put out.

I use my normal butter dish that can hold a 200g packet, but in this hot weather, I cut the block of butter in half, and only put 100g in the dish. This way I can use the butter up, before a spot of mould appears in the corner of the dish. Our butter does not turn rancid, unless it has been in the dish, standing on the kitchen table for ten days or more.

Just put the whole pack in the butter dish and leave it on the work surface next to the toaster. If it's exceptionally hot the te dish goes in the fridge if I remember, it's never gone ''off''.

My butter is in a butter dish , lives on my kitchen work top. Use it for toast abd baking - it does not go off.

Doodledog Mon 18-Aug-25 13:47:24

Thank you. It has served me well grin

They are sometimes available on eBay, and there are toast racks and eggcups in the same range.

Allira. Once my house move is over and I am settled in my new home I think I'll have a go at making my own butter.
Doodle I like your butter dish. smile

Doodledog Mon 18-Aug-25 12:46:33

I have a 'Douglas' one which I got ages ago with Lurpak butter. I put a whole pack in, and even in hot weather it doesn't go off. I keep it on the worktop in all weathers, but do sometimes have to soften the butter for breakfast (special setting on the microwave) in the bleak midwinter when the heating has been off overnight.

I agree * NotSpag* if it's in a plastic tub it's the spreadable type of butter with added oil. This stuff doesn't taste as deliciously buttery as the butter I use.
My sister in law, farmer's wife, used to make her own butter and took it to market to sell. smile

I've bought cream which was on offer and made butter a couple of times 🙂

Like Primrose I love my Lakeland, stainless steel insulated butter dish.

No it doesn't Fidelity2 it comes in a wrapping and won't spread straight out of the fridge.

Fidelity2 Sun 17-Aug-25 23:53:31

Why do people want butter dishes? I just take the butter out of the fridge and use it as and when required. It comes in a plastic tub !

Allira Sun 17-Aug-25 22:00:10

My DC use butter too, not adulterated spreads.
Olive oil as well.

I have never used anything but butter. I have never use margarine or whatever they call the stuff made from cooking oil.

Half pound in the butter dish and kept in a cool pantry. lasts weeks without problem.

Ours stays out in the butter dish.

It never lasts for weeks as it's gone fairly quickly!

NotSpaghetti Sun 17-Aug-25 21:24:18

Google "Nisbets" for anything kitchen.
I know they carry several butter dishes.

I have three with lids.
I put half a pack out at a time. It doesn't go off.

All but one of my adult children use butter dishes too. I would say more people use them than you think.
