Is this email a scam?

I received an email from a distant friend asking me to email her back if I got her email, which I did. Then I got a reply saying that she was on holiday but was trying to buy an Apple gift card for the birthday of a friend who had liver cancer but her bank card details weren’t working, so could I do it and she’d pay me back when she got home, and she was relying on me. It all sounds super fishy but it’s signed with her usual nickname. I don’t intend to comply, but will still feel uneasy if it really was real, Has anyone here had a similar request?. The language of the email was all correct but sounded too formal . TIA

Delete it!!

Allira Thu 28-Aug-25 15:16:31

And let her know she has been hacked 🙂

Thank you Allira.

Would it be in character for her to make such a request? Not the sort of thing I would ask of a distant friend. This toing and froing of emails sounds very suspicious.

Yes it’s a scam.

Thank you Allira.

Ps contact her by a different method to let her know.

DH has a friend who sent a few odd emails, sometimes offering DH a wonderful business opportunity. The friend is in his 90s! I think he's tightened up the security on his email service now.

I have a friend who was hacked.

Like you, the wording sounded relatively genuine. But not quite correct.[it all didnt involve money though].

fwiw, she got hacked the following week as well.

Soory, didnt mean to include a quote.

One of the commonest scams. Apple gift card, Amazon gift card - all scams. Warn your friend her account has been hacked and delete.

Never heard of the Apple gift card one. My friend paid scammers £1800 for a phone that she thought was for her son 😳 I asked how many did she buy?

I wonder where you have been Mt61 - these scams are widely publicised and have been around for some time, just like the “Mum, I’ve broken my mobile” one.

I’ve never had the gift card one, tbh I’ve never really had any scams, its just what I’ve heard from other people.

Thank you all for confirming my suspicions. I’ve contacted my friend, by phone, and her tech savvy son is sorting things out for her. It’s horrible to have to be so suspicious of simple communications. I feel that I’m becoming a cynic even though I don’t want o be.

We've had several WhatsApps purporting to be from our daughter saying she has lost her phone and 'this is my new number. Please add it to your contacts.'

petra Thu 28-Aug-25 16:08:48

You should have deleted it when you read Apple Giftcard
This scam has been going on for years.

petra Thu 28-Aug-25 17:27:58

Chicken
I would advise you to remove your details on Amazon.
It doesn’t take a minute.
You can put it back on in a tick when you want to order something.
An email address is is what scammers want. Once they’ve got that it cause all sorts of problems.

Bit of a worry that you even had to ask! Of course it’s a scam.

Grandmotherto8 Fri 29-Aug-25 13:56:06

Scam email. You could find similar arriving as you opened that email. You're on a list now!

knspol Fri 29-Aug-25 14:19:22

Had the same scam myself a while back, delete it but let the friend know she's been hacked.
