I know exactly what you mean and it is irritating, especially when the OP has said the issue is resolved happily and people go on telling her what she should do🙄

On the other hand when I’ve responded to comments on my posts and am having what I thought was a group conversation I was criticised for making the thread “the Lathyrus show”.

I have to admit though, from the number of typos I post, I’m guilty of no even reading my own…l😳

Yeap, yesterday at 5pm a lady explained she had moved on and yet people are still posting, some still asking for explanations. Unbelievable

I try to keep up but when a thread is really long I admit I don’t read all the posts so maybe I post something that has been said before or after the OP has said the situation is resolved etc.

It drives me mad especially when the problem has been solved and then folks still pile in with more answers, why oh why can’t people keep up and even just quick scan read better than nothing

Some comments are extremely lengthy, and I freely admit that I don’t necessarily read through all these - sorry. However, I try not to repeat myself or comment on anything that the OP may already have concluded. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I always read the whole thread if it’s one to which I’m going to add my ‘thoughts’.
Often, while reading through posts, the situation will have been resolved, but still others continue to add. On other (frequent) occasions, an old thread, often several years old, is resurrected by a spammer - then GNs continue adding to the thread, apparently without noticing the date on the OP. I was rebuked for reporting such a post, as subsequent posts were probably giving incorrect legal information to the outdated thread. Another spammer I reported resurrected a thread about cleaning products and I was told that the thread was still of interest - but if it was, why had it taken 2 years for others to add to it? Just start another thread?

I remember a couple of years ago, when an OP was asking for advice about her elderly mother. She later posted that her Mum had died, but the thread continued to be added to by GNs who obviously hadn’t read the thread. I felt very sorry for the OP and hoped she didn’t return to her thread.

On a similar topic, I wonder if GNHQ should remove whole threads that have lain dormant for years?

Some threads go on for so long that all aspects have been covered relatively early and all the rest is repetition. Would there be an argument for closing down threads when they have reached a certain length?

One other online forum I belong to has an archive of old threads. Not sure where the cut off is, but it saves posters from adding to threads where the OP has told us the problem is resolved, and it stops old threads being revived by spammers.

If you come late to a thread the trick is to read it backwards. You will soon reach the point where you get the gist and how to comment appropriately….or leave it be.

For sure, I’ve jumped on a thread, not read it all properly & replied, was Mainly looking after dad, & not having time.
I Do read op post now & take it in a little better, especially if it’s long winded post.
After all I am only human.

Yes sometimes it could do with removing, especially if someone has lost someone close.

I would like to see all the OP posts in green like Mumsnet. I don’t always RTFT but like to read the OPs updates.

Yes, it’s obvious some posters never read previous comments.

They just pile in with advice, relevant or not.

Some posts are difficult to follow though, if they are one long dirge with no paragraphs.

I confess I avoid those.

I agree Calendargirl a great block of writing with no paragraphs is so hard to read. I just skip those.

I think the issue is more with the functionality of the site which seems to be in need of an update. When some topics run on for page after page, people really don’t have time to read through it all. I try to scan through but it’s easy to miss something important. I agree that items should be archived after a certain time. I also think it would be good to simply have the ability to tick a post if you agree, which would hopefully reduce the number of similar comments.

I think it would also be helpful if there was a facility to allow the original poster to end the post once they have had all the answers to their question/problem that they want so that no more posts can be made.

I think is wise when an OP has on all innocence started a thread on a topic which ruffles many members feathers, causing rather caustic replies, it would be good for members to realise that enough negative replies have been made so there is no need to pile on.
Am thinking of one just now about sending Christmas cards.

That’s the second time this morning that my comments (and those of others) have been criticised for negativity. It is not a ‘pile on’ just expressing my view. Or am I not allowed to do that?

Yes there would and it’s a good idea👍🏻

I do wish posters would stop being so easily offended. Another poster’s ideas and opinions are just that, theirs, and anyone who chooses to be offended must stay that way.Maybe their opinions offend others? It’s a forum.
