What sorts of people are you curious about?

i am a very chatty person (from glasgow) i will talk to anyone, i like to hear about other people but no gossip, i have a lot of hospital visits for various things, calming an older lady down about the colonoscopy she was in tears about and hearing her laugh about it's only a bum you are showing and i have farted during mine. talking to an old man who gets the bus into nuneaton every day in the hope if he sits at the seating area somebody will talk to him(i was visiting my dad) or the lady who goes into my area on the bus everyday from the mental health hospital attached to the hospital i visit for appointments, she is loud and sometimes annoying and others don't like her, she hates having change in her purse, she likes pound coins, i will take change with me just in case. i have learned about lots of people with just chatting and sometimes in can be humbling.

I am interested in a lot of people, Those I meet by chance say in a coffee shop or at a meeting, people with skills that I dont have and want to learn something from. Older people , especially those who have lived in the area for many years so that they can tell me of earlier times in the dales etc. Patients I have taken to and from hospital from up the dales often tell me amazing things that I would never have known about without them. You get back many more than you give out. A lady had told me that she was sad that there was no bus and she no longer drove, so that she could visit a village that she had lived in many years before. After her hospital appointment was over I asked if she was expecting anyone to visit or a phone call as she lived alone. She said no so I asked if she would like to go to this visit, and so we went there. She was very happy to visit and thanked me, but I gained so much knowledge about how that village had been many years ago. She knew which used to be the bakers and the butchers etc etc and painted a picture for me that I have written down so that I have this knowledge to pass on to others in the future. A great trip which gave me lots of insights that I would not have known about.
Everyone has something in their lives that is interesting, but I am totally uninterested in so called "celebrities" or such as "politicians" or people that you know have goals to meet or their own agenda. The "everyday" person is more interesting to me, and I dont know if any of you have read that old book of Neville Shute "Trustee from the Toolroom" which I enjoyed because of its sailing parts but again , the basic view is that you may never know what that ordinary person going on the bus or the tube or walking into the bread shop may have in their past and it is all worth knowing for me. I hope that I never end up where I am the centre of the universe and I have no interest in the rest of the world.

Couldn’t agree more, Kate1949. Here on GN, we must add up to around a million years of age and experience and each of us with our own unique stories to tell. I often think how you have a very interesting life story as you have succeeded in spite of all the adversity you faced as a child. It would be interesting to read each other’s life experiences.

I must study the death adverts from my own area at some point to check - but the ones I see where I now live (ie West Wales) do noticeably often say "A friend to everyone" or similar such words. It always strikes me as very excluding.....given that there are a noticeable number that don't say that and it feels like the ones that don't say that are delivering a virtual slap to the person who has just died. Though sometimes the slap is to the readers - ie if there is only one copy of the notice and it's in Welsh (at which point I think "The relatives have just slapped any friends of theirs that don't speak Welsh by telling them they don't care if they can only recognise the name. I guess they're not welcome at the funeral". I've had to ring a funeral director here before now - because I recognised the name.....but had no idea what it was saying...and he gave me a grudging translation....

I used to work for an organisation that provided temp' accommodation for varying groups of people and quite often they would have experienced trauma, substance misuse, been refugees etc.

I often found myself humbled, shocked/saddened when they shared their backgrounds with me and it really did make me aware of not judging.
I think at times a genuine curiosity can help both sides.

Yes, I'm a Nosey Parker too, love to hear about where people are from, what their country is like and surprisingly, the many coincidences we have discovered about who knows whose Aunt or Uncle or second cousin who just happens to live in the same area as them!

All people, hence ( probably ) my choice of career always in health care from nursing into physio.
Now retired I still have to be people centred. Pretty sure it says something although I have no idea what. Probably that I’m a nosey Parker!

I’m interested in geniuses. Not that I know any, but I’d love to know what made people like Beethoven and Shakespeare so different from ordinary people.

There was a documentary on recently about Beethoven made by Charles Hazlewood. It made fascinating viewing. I was shocked to learn that Beethoven was physically abused by his father, who used to drag him out of his bed and beat him. He was then forced to play the piano and was beaten again. Beethoven allegedly developed a personality disorder as a result of his abusive upbringing.
