The mystery of the vanishing watering can

Just wondering if anyone has stories about things disappearing mysteriously?
I am going to lend my car to a friend so yesterday decided to give it a wash. Having hosed it initially I filled a watering can with soapy water and poured it over the car, then attached a brush to the hose and washed the car. When I came to clear up, I couldn't find the watering can, which I must have put down on the drive. I searched everywhere but it was nowhere in our garden (not huge). I came to the conclusion that someone must have picked it up when walking past our house and gone off with it! This is strange, since we don't get a lot of people walking past apart from dog walkers. It's been a stressful couple of weeks, and you begin to doubt your sanity!
Any other tales of strange disappearances?

Have you checked behind the sofa?😄
Looks like you have a local thief unfortunately.

It couldn't be behind the sofa, or in the fridge which is a good place usually to look for lost things!

This week I heard of a local lady who, while she was clearing an outside area put a little outdoor cat house on her drive, but between their parked cars.
The little house was away from the end of the drive, so clearly not intended to be 'given away '.
When this lady had finished her task the cat house was gone. Not seen since.

I never did find the gate I had taken off its hinges ready for painting. Went to get the paint and returned to an empty space. I think the scrap metal van must have passed along the road.

Hope you find your watering can.

I've lost a double duvet cover. The matching pillow cases are in the airing cupboard but there's no sign of the duvet cover.
I'm at a loss to know where else I might have put it.
Your watering can isn't in the car is it?

Before my Mum was diagnosed with dementia, (but perhaps there were signs) she got new curtains delivered and unpacked them ready to hang. Then they somehow went missing. We all searched the house from top to bottom, but they were nowhere to be found.
At the same time, my Mum had had carpet cleaners in, and my Mum had given them cups of tea and biscuits and chatted with them as she always does with tradespeople, getting their life stories and woes. She learned that one of them had a son who was getting married, but he didn't know what to give the couple as a wedding gift. Apparently, he wanted it to be something nice, but he didn't have a lot of money to spare. (Yes, our alarm bells were ringing at that too!)
So Mum concluded that the carpet cleaner must have taken the curtains as a wedding present for his son. Privately, we were sceptical - I mean, curtains as a wedding present? But anyway, it was a story that meant we could stop looking for them.
In the summer, the next year, we found the curtains, in their opened wrapping, outside in a garden seat that was also a storage chest. How did they get there? No-one knows. By the time they were found, my Mum had got new curtains.

Unless I store my shoes in the original shoe box or in a plastic shoe box - one of them will disappear never to be found again .
It first happened about thirty plus years ago with a lovely pair of red leather shoes .
Now it happens regularly .
Tidying up yesterday - I found that there is one missing slipper and one missing boot .

My best loss/find was my 18 carat signet ring which I lost when DH was very ill, dying. I was terribly sad as it had been a 21st birthday present from my godfather, but decided that it was really trivial in the greater scheme of things.
About a year later, I found it when emptying the freezer to move house! I as very happy together it back.
Perhaps it’s a poltergeist? I have found dressmaking pins in my bed and in the shower…

We've lost the (very comfortable) cushions that go on our garden chairs.
Searched high & low - no sign of them !

It's funny how things seem to vanish when we need them most. I once spent ages looking for my garden gloves only to find them in the compost bin where I'd absentmindedly tossed them after cleaning up. I hope your watering can turns up somewhere unexpected; sometimes a break and a fresh pair of eyes makes all the difference!

Our watering can went missing too - for about 10 days and from our front drive singingnutty. We decided it must have been stolen... but no, it was tucked between big flowerpots where the foliage had disguised it as it was a green recycled plastic one!

I seem to remember another thread about a vanishing jug a while ago...

Dh put the phone charger in his overnight bag when we went away.
Can’t find it anywhere!
Bought another one yesterday. But where the heck is the other one!

A camera disappeared one Christmas. 6 months later it was found down the side of the sofas cushion.🤯

We only found our watering can when we went to rotate a pot BTW. Otherwise it would probably still be there.

About five years after loosing an expensive designer tie pin while away on holiday I found it.
By this time my husband had been dead for about three years.
I was buying a new car and the old car was about to be taken away on a low loader. As I sat in the driver's seat for the last time I looked to my left and there, on the passenger seat was the tie pin. Don't ask me where it came from because I don't know.
I was speachless with emotion!!

Aldom Sun 07-Sept-25 10:58:25

Speechless 😲
The tie pin belonged to my husband. I didn't make that clear. smile

A one legged robber holding a watering can🤭

The only things I lose are earrings, or to be specific one earring from the pair.Add an earring to the one legged robber with the watering can.🤬

I have had some smiles reading these posts, particularly about the watering cans hiding behind plant pots and undergrowth. However, I think I may have found a solution to what happened to mine - in our local area people often leave things they don't need any more just outside the garden gate. This includes plant pots, surplus plants and often books and childrens' toys. This indicates that they are there for someone who can use them. I must have left the watering can right at the end of the drive so someone thought it was unwanted. However, this local custom has led to a few unfortunate occurrences - for instance someone took a fridge out of their garage and put it on the drive to hasten the ice thawing when they were cleaning it out. Went inside for a few minutes and it was gone! I'm sure this kind of thing happens all over the place.

If you'll put ANYTHING down when I'm working it disappears. If I buy a new one though, it's back!

A colleague told me of a warm day when her GC were playing in her front garden. She brought out a tray with drinks and snacks, put it on the wall, and went inside to bring out a chair.
Outside again, she looked for the tray :
"Oh" say the children, unconcerned," the lady took it."
... never to be seen again...

Aldom Sun 07-Sept-25 18:02:21

Pably. Or even saying goodbye to me grin
