Brrrrrrr!

Autumn is early this year and it’s chilly this evening. I’m very tempted to switch on my electric fire, just to warm the sitting room.
In the end I put on my dressing gown, over my clothes, and thick socks.
Has anyone actually put on their central heating yet?

SueDonim Fri 12-Sept-25 21:24:07

I really don’t understand this hairshirt attitude to having the central heating on. Obviously money can play a part in how we heat our homes but if it’s not a pressing issue, why be uncomfortable? My mum, when she was in her own home, lived on a basic pension plus PC but her little house was never cold.

Our CH works on thermostat. It came on the other morning for the first time since May, for 24 minutes. It took the nip off the air in the bedrooms and bathroom. It’s been on twice for an hour in the evening to take the chill off after windy and wet days.

We’re also in Scotland. I think it was about 15deg today and I got caught in a windy, icy downpour of a ninja shower, which was horrible.

Still got the Summer duvet on the bed and it’s ok just about.
Downstairs am turning on the fake woodburner early in the morning until it warms the room.Got out my cosy socks and the throws for evening.

Oh, absolutely not. We have an absolute ban on any form of heating going on before October at the earliest, and even then it would only be the woodburner. Central heating is reserved for the very coldest of conditions - talking about frost, snow etc.

Why is that?
If it’s a money concern, I get that totally, but not otherwise.

yes my heating is on often, I would keep it off for longer, but my OH has alzheimers and feels the cold even on warm days, he sits by the radiator, with a fleece and his gloves on

Grammaretto Fri 12-Sept-25 20:26:44

I'm in Scotland too. I was cold in bed last night. Brr.
But later today I dodged a shower by cleaning out the greenhouse, harvesting my meagre crops and was boiling.

I may throw a blanket over the duvet tonight.
Heating on? Not yet but I will light the fire when my visitors arrive.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 12-Sept-25 20:14:27

No, we have builders in all windows and doors open.

No socks (apart from the gym) until at least October. Heating no!

teabagwoman Fri 12-Sept-25 20:12:20

I haven’t needed to yet for which I’m grateful. Don’t think it will be long before it’s on.

AGAA4 Fri 12-Sept-25 20:06:48

I had to give in today and put the heating on. It was only 13° in my living room. It was on for about an hour and felt much better for a little warmth.

Deedaa Fri 12-Sept-25 20:03:33

I've just started wearing my winter dressing gown in the mornings. By lunch time it's usually warmed up nicely.

Grandmaofone Fri 12-Sept-25 20:00:05

yes, two early mornings about 6am in an attempt to drive out damp as we have had driving wind and lashing rain hitting the house on the west side, plus, it is misty and chilly early morning now.
As soon as the sun rises and the day warms up then we have top windows open.
This weekend the electric blanket is going back on the bed, winter duvet on, the drop in temperature is about 10 degrees
so of course we are feeling the difference.

Monday and Tuesday this week here were glorious, warm, sunny.
Now we have a week of intermittent rain storms and winds.
O joy.

It can't make it's mind up here. I got up at 5.00.a.m. this morning to drive up into the Cotswolds to fence judge at a horse trials. We had just about every type of weather apart from snow. The sun came out, it was warm, the sun went in, it was cold, the wind blew, it stopped blowing, the heavens opened and we had driving rain then just a misty barely there drizzle and then the sun came out and we were warm again! I enjoyed my day but I didn't enjoy the weather.

There wasn't any drizzle here, just warm sunshine interspersed with deluges!

Why doesn't it wash the cobwebs off the conservatory roof? Or the leaves that cling to them?

Thorntrees Fri 12-Sept-25 19:37:14

Socks for me too this week.
Have put the electric blanket on the bed for DH who puts his side on but not mine just yet.

MiniMoon Fri 12-Sept-25 19:16:48

I put my socks on for the first time today too. Our heating is set at 18° and has been coming on in the mornings for the past few days.
It was wet, cool and dull in my part of Northumberland this morning.

First day wearing socks
And socks.

Allira Fri 12-Sept-25 19:02:42

No, but I've got my vest on today!

Well, it's a cami top, vest sounds so oldladyish.

Greenfinch Fri 12-Sept-25 19:01:39

Definitely not. Still have windows open even at night and only wear a sweater in the evening. Very warm here( Berkshire) when the sun is out. First day wearing socks.

JamesandJon33 Fri 12-Sept-25 18:56:44

I’m not giving in until October

Taichinan Fri 12-Sept-25 18:54:01

I'm further north than you Grandmabatty, on the Angus coast, but we've been sheltered from the worst of the wind and rain. I'm still under my summer bedcover, but did put on my lighter weight oodie this morning when I got up. Winter's getting closer I fear!

ViceVersa Fri 12-Sept-25 18:51:46

Grandmabatty

I live in Scotland where it's generally colder than elsewhere. The temperature didn't rise above 11° today and it has been wet and windy. I have put on the heating for a couple of hours and I am perfectly happy with that.

I'm in Scotland too, but my rules (see above) still apply!

Not yet! but my socks have been resurrected sad I've also invested in a weighted blanket more for my husband because he feels the cold, although I'm hoping it will give me a better quality of sleep.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 12-Sept-25 18:28:29

No. We are warm in our apartment. A 15 year old new build with excellent insulation and our balcony window & door is south facing so warms our main room beautifully. Probably won’t need any heating here until December/January like last year.

merlotgran Fri 12-Sept-25 18:28:19

Today is the first day I’ve worn socks!

Whitewavemark2 Fri 12-Sept-25 18:27:10

Well ……. This morning I changed it from summer mode to automatic, which means according to the time of day (at the moment mornings and evenings) it comes on below 21c.
