Hello Kitcheners- hope you don't mind and apologies if a new kitchen has already been opened elsewhere but I couldn't find it if there has... I've done my best but it still needs a few throws and cushions to make it more homely, ready for the nights drawing in and chillier evenings. Some freshly baked scones, jam and cream on the side if you fancy a treat.
I hope you dont think it presumptious of me to start this kitchen as I don't post as regularly as some of you but do find Soops Kitchen a lovely place to drop into even if I've nothing to say.

Oh Redcar I'm sorry to hear about the death of your godmother. She was a force of nature and your affection for her shone through.
It's continued to be very windy today. I have been very tired today and had a two hour nap this afternoon and early to bed tonight. The washing was done, the sheets changed and I made sure the kitchen was tidy but that was all.
Fgt 💐

Redcar Sat 04-Oct-25 22:05:30

uttb I hope you had a good journey home today and are comfortable in your own home.
fgt what a lovely day for you, memories to cherish!

I have just returned from dinner at DD1’s, my dear son in law came to fetch me and delivered me home again safely. DD2 and her family were there too, so a noisy few hours. I was glad to be with them, yesterday was a sad day for us all as my dear godmother passed away last night. Her friends had been called to the hospital at 10.00 pm and took me with them. She was 100 years old and until three weeks ago had been managing quite well at home on her own. I got home from the hospital at 1.00am, it was pouring with rain and beginning to blow a gale, so we had several power outages, which meant resetting the bedroom clock. I didn’t get much sleep as I had to be at the doctors for my flu jab at 9.30 this morning! So I’m ready for bed now.
I was standing a lot yesterday and again today so my back is complaining. I have a hot wheat pack on it and have taken paracetamol. I’m hoping for a better night tonight.

I hope that our Scottish Kitcheners haven’t sustained too much damage in the storm. In particular I hope that soop and her DH are safe and warm. There are a few branches down here in Essex, but nothing much.

Thinking of those in the quiet corner.
Night night everyone.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Sat 04-Oct-25 21:45:56

Just popping across from the quiet corner to say we’ve had a better day than I expected. Himself took extra morphine at 4pm and I helped him dress to go over for an early tea with our little family. Stepfather 93 was fetched too. It was heartwarming to all be together for 2 hours. “Let’s do this mum, while we can.” 💕

Himself was sat next to the now 13 year old Boy Wonder. They talked football at one stage. My heart melted when Himself said something witty and was rewarded with a laugh and “I love you grandad”.

I filled up I don’t mind telling you. x

Grandmadinosaur Sat 04-Oct-25 21:31:44

👋 from the quiet corner.

A gusty day here too today. I think tomorrow is supposed to be a better day. I hope the Scots grans are all safe and sound.

We’ve been to a farm shop/cafe today. Got lots of ideas for “C” presents and as they had some nice looking chocolate bars DH treated me to a bar of fig and almond. Unusual combination and I love anything with figs in. Had a couple of squares while watching Strictly. It was delicious.

Enjoy your family day Jax I’m envious. My families weekends seem to revolve around football. Playing, watching coaching …..

Thinking of FGT tonight

Hope today has been a better day for you UTBB

Jaxjacky Sat 04-Oct-25 20:36:09

Hi all, it’s been a gusty showery day with sunshine too, but washing is drying inside. Family here for lasagna tomorrow, I’ve made the pasta sauce, I’ll do the rest tomorrow, daughter is bringing salad, son his appetite 🙂 (he’ll wash up).
Grandson has football in the morning, it’s a distance away so we won’t go.
I hope you’re home safe and sound utbb not your best break, but maybe a timely distraction.
Hoping those further north have survived Amy, I know many in NI, including family members of MrJ lost power overnight, back now.
Those in the quiet corner 👋 you’re not forgotten

Usedtobeblonde Fri 03-Oct-25 21:42:30

Thank you all I actually have had a better day but can’t wait to get home.
We are staying in a Premier Inn which has taken lessons from Fawlty Towers.
It is so bad it is funny.
We went down for a meal tonight at 6:30, remember it is Friday night.
Greeted with, sorry but we have no fish, no gammon ,no chicken, no Pizzas.
We had two starters each which to be fair were ok .
People were leaving before even sitting down but it was wet and windy so we stayed put.
Whitbread as a company must have a death wish having closed all Beefeaters, Brewers Fayers, Thyme restaurants associated with Premier Inns and having their own brand which outsiders can’t use.
They are dire.
However it gave us a chuckle along with the few patrons in there .
The staff were not even bothered.
I am cosily in bed now and hope you are all equally snug from Storm Amy.

Grannmarie Fri 03-Oct-25 21:33:10

My sister has no power now...
My lights are flickering off and on but OK so far.
My brother and sister in law are at their caravan in St Andrew's, he says if it gets any worse they'll end up in Norway!🇳🇴

Hope your grandson's basketball 🏀 game goes well tomorrow brook.
Fingers crossed you stay cosy, Grandmabatty.

Wishing everyone a safe night and hopefully a good sleep. 😴NNGB

Redcar Fri 03-Oct-25 21:05:42

Thanks for the tip brook we often get power outages here so I have a small flask of hot water ready. I also have a torch on the table beside me!
My cousins weren’t expecting good weather for their trip but when they arrived from Perth at the beginning of September, it was warmer here than in Perth. They’ve been lucky so far and hopefully once Amy has done her worst it will brighten up again. I can cope with rain, but really don’t like the wind especially at night!
One of my sons in law has done the Yorkshire three peaks challenge today, it was very wet!

utbb I hope you’ve had a better day today with your friend and that you get home safely tomorrow.
I hope everyone stays safe tonight and that there isn’t too much damage from the storm.
TOYA. Night night.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 03-Oct-25 20:26:31

Ah you saw it too I see Nannytopsy! 🙂

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 03-Oct-25 20:22:24

I missed that Charleygirl I must try & find it on catchup sometime. Where we live (downsized here 15 years ago) has been a godsend to me now in our situation.

brook2704 Fri 03-Oct-25 19:53:02

The power is still on here, keeping fingers crossed 🤞 I can’t see as much now as it’s dark but earlier the trees at the end of the getting a real battering and debris flying all around. I can hear something clattering outside in the garden but don’t know what it is. DGSs trip to Stirling for his Basketball game tomorrow is still on, although they’re not leaving until about 8.30am so hopefully the worst will be over by then. He plays for the Highland Bears team and loves it. A couple of years ago it was a toss up between football and basketball and basketball won - good job he’s tall!
So pleased to hear you’re feeling better Jax and got your appetite back
Enjoy having your DGD over for a sleepover grannmarie, special times ❤️
Take care all out there x

Grandmabatty Fri 03-Oct-25 19:16:55

We had a power cut earlier Grannmarie and there are a number of trees down. I don't have a flask but I think that's next to buy! Utbb hopefully you will get home alright tomorrow.

Jaxjacky Fri 03-Oct-25 18:41:30

Tum better thanks all.
It’s wet with increasing wind here in the South, Mr J has gone to bowls, only in the village, not far, he sorted out something to eat earlier.
Fridge full after earlier delivery and I’ve had my pneumococcal vaccination.
utbb you must be miserable, I hope tomorrow is a reasonable day with your friend and she drives a different way home xx
Fingers crossed those of you bearing the brunt of Amy stay safe and warm.
Now, what to eat..
corner FGT and others.

Grannmarie Fri 03-Oct-25 18:07:29

I'm glad you're taking things easy, Grandmabatty, you just need time to heal. You are wise to be gentle with yourself. 💐🙏

Our book group dinner has been postponed, no one fancied driving in 60 mile an hour winds - that's the forecast. Trains are off too. So I've put my car in the garage and moved the garden furniture and big pots close to the house. I've got the heating up high just now to really warm the house up in case of power cuts later. The wind is really picking up now, I can hear things blowing over in the road. I hope next door's partly built extension is OK, the workers finished early this afternoon, rained off.

UsedToBeBlonde, there really is no place like home. ❤️ I'm glad your DS had the SW's support when he visited his son's school. Hopefully this will start to set a suitable support plan in motion.

Hello 👋 Kitty, I hope you are recovering well. 💐

Redcar, we have an Australian cousin visiting just now too! They were in the Highlands last week, this week they flew to Ireland, not sure yet if they're back, I know some ferries are off. Hopefully we'll see them on Sunday. 🤞

Jaxjacky, I hope your tummy has settled down now and you can enjoy your weekend. 🤞

Brook, you've reminded me to look out the flasks, thank you! I did enjoy my pampering yesterday afternoon, hair and nails done, but now we're not going out!🤣
All titivated and nowhere to go...

DGD is coming tomorrow for a sleepover, that should be fun!

Wishing everyone a peaceful Friday evening and the best weekend possible. Thinking of the Soops, FGTs, SueD and all our kitchen friends with worries, illness or sorrow.
TOYA.

Grandmabatty Fri 03-Oct-25 16:07:16

brook it's very wet and windy here but not as bad as you're getting. Take care. Redcar it's such a shame the weather is so awful for your visitors.
I made bread this morning while waiting for the marks and Spencer delivery. The bread is lovely: the delivery isn't here yet. I've done very little today apart from the bread. Emptied and loaded the dishwasher is all. Chicken curry for dinner later. Have a good afternoon Kitcheners

brook2704 Fri 03-Oct-25 16:00:19

Hi kitchen pals, it’s very wet here in Inverness, not too windy just yet but forecast severe gales later
I’ve been out all morning volunteering, lunch provided there and then onto meet DH for a coffee at the garden centre before coming home. We’ve secured everything in the garden so will see how it goes. As a precaution we’ve just done a couple of flasks full of hot water in case of power cuts later so at least we can get a warm drink tonight.
I hope you eventually got some sleep last night UTTB and are having a reasonable day, even though you’d prefer to be home. Safe journey tomorrow
I hope your Australian cousins are enjoying their time in Scotland redcar even though they’re not seeing it at its best as it’s very soggy just now. With a bit of luck they might see a rainbow over the sea or a loch at some point.
Thinking of everyone in the quiet corner, take care all x

kittylester Fri 03-Oct-25 06:42:51

UTTB, waving to you from just a few miles away. I'm sorry that you are struggling and hope you got some sleep. And, i really hope there will be something put in place for you DGS.

Usedtobeblonde Fri 03-Oct-25 05:01:39

Middle of the night here in Nottingham where I am just for 2 nights with my friend across the road.
I am not enjoying and just want to be home.
I was so stressed that I was not really in the mood to come.
However I did not want to let her down, I shall not make the same mistake again, I shall start to think of myself first in future.
She is quite controlling and I have realised that her driving which I have noticed before is not the best now is actually worse.

We had to do the motorway and I was not comfortable at all.
I shall tentatively suggest another route home as I know the are very well but she may not accept my advice.
I must also accept that at 88 my gallivanting days are coming to an end, at least while my life is upset at home.

My S went into my GS’s school yesterday with his SW, he has one because of the situation with his mother, long story short, and they accept he needs help , it will be pit into place, when?
I don’t know , he should not be in mainstream school but again, long story why he is.
It is all a b…..y mess.

I am sitting in bed drinking Earl Grey tea.
I have used all the ordinary tea provided already.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of you who have commented on my problem and given good helpful advice.
I hope you are all fast asleep.

Charleygirl5 Thu 02-Oct-25 22:59:46

FGT I watched Location x3 yesterday evening, and where you live was mentioned and shown as a couple were house hunting there.

It was on the outskirts, but a lovely area. I know you live near the shops, a good decision you made! The weather was good, which helps.

Redcar Thu 02-Oct-25 22:28:18

brook I hope that your DGS gets to Stirling safely on Saturday, but like you, I’d be secretly hoping that the trip is cancelled! My Australian cousins are touring Scotland at the moment, they’re leaving Edinburgh in the morning and driving to Oban. They hope to get there before the worst of the storm arrives! I hope it doesn’t cause too much damage for you and that any power cuts don’t last too long. I don’t like strong winds!
Night night everyone, sleep well.

brook2704 Thu 02-Oct-25 21:19:23

Thank you grannmarie and well done to you too for your Aquafit and Strength & Balance, I hope you enjoyed your well deserved pampering this afternoon
Hoping you’re feeling a bit better now Jax
I’ve been at the hospital this morning for my volunteering session, a busy time just now for the medical students but they’re all so lovely and appreciative as are the teaching fellows too. I’m going back there again tomorrow morning, it’s interesting and I enjoy it so I don’t mind and it stops me getting bored
The forecast for Storm Amy is quite bad here Redcar, the trains have been cancelled from about 6pm tomorrow evening. DGS is supposed to be travelling down to Stirling on Saturday with his Basketball team but I’m not sure if it’ll go ahead. Secretly hoping it’ll get cancelled though as I worry when they’re travelling
I bought a new winter coat on eBay, really pleased with it and a good price too, but as I’m trying to work on the basis of ‘one in and one out’ I’m now trying to sell on my old one 🤣
Thinking of everyone in the quiet corner, gentle hugs to all x

Redcar Thu 02-Oct-25 18:03:51

jaxjacky I hope your upset tummy feels better soon. I hope the boiled eggs help settle it.

hulahoop Thu 02-Oct-25 16:58:56
