Have you noticed how many people on T.V. wave their hands around when talking to the camera's. It looks stupid. kate Humble for instance!
When I meet people, or see folk talking to others on the street I've never seen anybody waving their arms around to emphasise a point.

Yes travellers & diy enthusiasts on YouTube, usually men. Feel like I am watching Bill & Ben, the flower pot men.
So annoying.

I think I do it without realising. I am going to be very conscious of it now.

I talk with my hands but I don't think I wave my arms about unless I'm giving someone directons! I'm not on tv or Youtube so I'll carry on doing it smile

I have seen people waving their hands and arms around when talking. Is not too uncommon.

I have noticed that when newscasters stand they have paper in their hands. Could this be why.
They never seem to refer to said Paper.

I really don’t know why news readers have to stand, some of them look really awkward.

Just come across contact prints of DD2's wedding eighteen years ago. They reveal dramatic gestures in my father-of-the -bride speech. I might try to link them to what I actually said, if the notes have survived.

I used to wave my hands about a lot when I was younger - a sort of nervous trait I think. Then my company sent me on a course where we play acted various work scenarios and were videod. When it was played back I was quite shocked at how much I waved my hands and how it actually distracted from what I was saying. Next time I had a job interview I deliberately kept my hands still. Someone from the interview panel who knew me said how calm and collected I seemed. BTW I got the job.

My DH does this all the time, every converation is accompanied with mad gestures, waving hands and manic arm movements. Drives me mad, I just stare pointedly at his arms and hands while he is speaking and it stops it for about 10 seconds, and then it starts again!

I agree with 25Avalon, it's a nervous habit that the sufferer is generally unaware of until it is pointed out. One of my DDs had the same habit until she saw a replay of herself in an interview situation and realised what she was doing. She is now much more aware of it and uses hand gesures much more economically and to more effect.
