Well as todays weather is not as forecast (ie its wet and grey not sunny with blue skies) I started to browse the threads on GN (as an avoidance tactic regarding housework tasks wink ) and began wondering how we all came up with our GN names.

If you're happy to tell please do, but remember not to reveal anything which could compromise your anonymity.

Mine - Mamaa - came about as that was how my then 2 year old Grand-daughter said 'Grandma". She's nearly 16 now...

Because I have been…..

It rhymes with my name and was my nickname at primary school, and it has nothing to do with my hair being curly, it's straight!

I’ve got 8 grandchildren - so nanna8. I also have 6 great but thought that was a bit much ( I’m not that old ,my mob started young !)

LadyGaGa Sat 20-Sept-25 23:35:26

Two of my GC called me Ga Ga when they were very small. I always hoped it would stick as I thought it was pretty cool - but it soon morphed into Grandma. It was the first name that came into my mind when I signed up (and I do love Lady Ga Ga!)

It was the name I used on a forum for carers of people with dementia. Nuff sed really! Couldn’t be bothered at the time to think of another.

At the time I signed up for Gransnet I had an allotment, which was taking up a signifigant amount of my time.

My work was foot health care . I visited regular clients in their homes. One lovely client told me he and his wife had nicknames for family and friends and I was Miss Toe Toe

It is my lovely Granny’s name and also my granddaughter’s name.

I had to keep my mouth shut about certain things with some people so came here to find an outlet, it seems to have worked!

Kupari45 Sat 20-Sept-25 22:52:45

Tried to think of a name when I first joined, but none were excepted. had a travel brochure next to my computer about Dubrovnik, and Kupari was on the map of the area.

The first part is my school nickname, strangely the second half was due to a GC asking me the meaning of the word.

Simply a childhood nickname.

Had to change my name at one point, and was listening to
'Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring'.

Chose mine from a title of a Catherine Cookson book.

I was out in the garden and had just decided to join you all. I found someone already had the name I had thought of and was trying to think of another name when a Robin with a particularly red breast hopped onto the feed tray. So that was how it was decided. I just added a random number.

We had just been on holiday and seen puffins for the first time ... fascinating little birds!

I was feeling quite dejected & not complimentary to myself when I signed up to make my first post.
I'm fine with the name still, though.

Mine is very boring compared to some of the others! I was looking round the kitchen for inspiration when I saw a moth in the window and I was 62 at the time. That’s it, I’m afraid. I found Gransnet six years ago when I googled magazines for older women and a link came up to a thread on the subject. I immediately loved the warmth and wit demonstrated by its contributors and decided to join. Gransnet kept DH and me going throughout lockdown and he often reads the threads as well as me. There’s such a wonderful mix of subjects and I always pop in every morning to see what folk are up to. The love and support shown to those who are suffering for whatever reason is very heartwarming. It’s part of my life now, so I thank you all from my heart. ❤️

I think mine is pretty obvious! It’s the same name I use for my online word games.

Skydancer Sat 20-Sept-25 20:26:05

I love birdwatching and the wonderful bird of prey, the Marsh Harrier, is known as the sky dancer because of its incredible sky-high acrobatic movements.

Mine was my sign on when I was still employed, many moons ago.

Fidelity2 Sat 20-Sept-25 19:59:17

My Husband had a relative who was a sailor on HM S Fidelity. The story of its sinking always interested me.

TwiceAsNice Sat 20-Sept-25 19:45:13

I joined Gransnet when my daughter had twins . I was thrilled to be a Granny so two babies were “TwiceasNice”.

LadyGracie Sat 20-Sept-25 19:19:18

After my beautiful posh cat, unfortunately she’s no longer with us.
