Well as todays weather is not as forecast (ie its wet and grey not sunny with blue skies) I started to browse the threads on GN (as an avoidance tactic regarding housework tasks wink ) and began wondering how we all came up with our GN names.

If you're happy to tell please do, but remember not to reveal anything which could compromise your anonymity.

Mine - Mamaa - came about as that was how my then 2 year old Grand-daughter said 'Grandma". She's nearly 16 now...

It’s the name of my favourite fishing fly. Like me it is small, grey and very reliable!

well, there was a packet on the table in front of me as I struggled to think of a name,

Coolgran65 Fri 26-Sept-25 20:04:46

Mine is also really boring. 65 because I was 65 when I joined 11 years ago. I was a gran.
I thought Coolgran sounded ..... Cool. smile

Franbern and there was me thinking you were in all likelihood German. 🤣

grumppa

A few years ago the family decided (erroneously, I hasten to add!) that I was the Christmas Grump grandpa.

One of the DGC bought DH one of these 😁

They do all love him, btw!

As a Maggie I grew up having that totally inappropriate song about sailors and prostitutes sung to me, so I wanted Maggiemay. It was already taken, so I’d to add a touch of mystery…

I really love Snickers!

Franbern Wed 24-Sept-25 08:54:42

My Mums name was Frances and my Dads name Bernard
When I was younger I always hoped to be a professional novelist, and Franbern would have been the name I meant to write under. Never, actually had anything published.

I'm a pigeon, obviously.

Aely Tue 23-Sept-25 16:12:43

Magenta8, I'm not even sure how Aely is pronounced. I go for A-lee but some think it might be I-lee.

If I had chosen my old nickname as some have on here, I thought it might give some people the wrong idea about me, although that is debateable as my nickname was Trouble.

The name of my horse

Newatthis Sun 21-Sept-25 21:33:55

Now with 2 grandchildren, oldest 7 and another due soon, I am no longer ‘newatthis’ however I learn something everyday!

Bellanonna Sun 21-Sept-25 21:29:16

Mine is beautiful grandma. Grandma describes me. Bella does not. But it’s Italian, as was my lovely husband.

And there was me thinking you’d just eaten a packet hulahoop!

Yes, me rpto.

Mine is an Australian name which is the name of a child whom DD taught; I just liked it.

hulahoop Sun 21-Sept-25 19:55:19

I had been showing gc how to do it.

glammagran Sun 21-Sept-25 19:42:44

I used this name as DD1 used this as a nickname for me when she had DGD1. Not really sure why!

cornergran Sun 21-Sept-25 19:38:17

I’m a simple soul. There’s no imagination in mine, we live on a corner.

Grandma70s Sun 21-Sept-25 16:13:10

So boring it’s hardly worth explaining. I’m a grandma and I was in my 70s when I chose the name. I’m in my 80s now.

Gwyllt Sun 21-Sept-25 16:02:32

We had just moved into our present home and the garden had not been touched for years It was wild

Cumbrianmale56 Sun 21-Sept-25 15:46:52

I was 56 and from Cumbria when I joined, it's that boring.

annodomini Sun 21-Sept-25 12:03:55

My original name was a mixture of my two forenames. I can't remember now why I decided to change it, but looking in the mirror, the one I have since gone by was appropriate then and is even more appropriate now.

JamesandJon33 Sun 21-Sept-25 11:03:33

LovesBach. I always thought you were Welsh as Bach in that language means little. It never occurred to me it was the composer Bach.

Sparklefizz Sun 21-Sept-25 08:37:47

I saw the name in a magazine article on online dating and liked it as it suggested champagne and parties and fun. Earlier this year when I mentioned on a thread that I don't drink, a couple of posters suggested I was lying because of my GN name. In actual fact, the name "Sparklefizz" is the nearest I get to alcohol. smile
