Not sure about everybody else but we are plagued by big spiders in our house and garden.
Just got rid of a humungous one on the living room curtain.
And going in the garden is like a military op, I have to get the broom and sweep it both ways as I walk anywhere, otherwise I get spiders dangling off me.
Have got plug ins that deter mice and spiders, except they most obviously don’t, and have sprayed peppermint round doors and windows, smells like a toothpaste factory but hasn’t stopped the house spiders from frolicking about.
Any ideas on how to deter them and get rid of them. I suck them up the hoover nozzle because I cannot go near them, it might be cruel but I really am phobic about the blighters.

I have a spider phobia. When my husband was alive, and we lived in a village, we had a lot of spider visitors. He would catch them and put them outside but they came back. It’s the only time I have been tempted to kill a living thing (the spider, not my husband!)
When he died, I moved out of our house as it was too big for me on my own and I am now spider-free. How? Easy - I moved to an 8th floor apartment!
That might be a bit drastic for some though!
My adult daughter also had a real phobia about spiders. It was so bad that she has been known to get her Dad out of bed when she came home from a late shift and finding a spider in the hallway. It was that, or stay on the doorstep or in the car all night until her husband came home from his night shift.
She realised that this could not go on and found out about a course run by London Zoo that promised to cure the phobia. We none of us had faith in this but, to my surprise, while she was there, she sent me a photo of her with a huge spider on her arm! She still doesn’t like them but can now cope if she sees one.

Just zap them, putting them outdoors does nothing, they find a crack in the wall and come back in.The biggest are the females , you don’t want them laying hundreds of little ones! The more that you zap the less you’ll see next Autumn.

I have a spider repellent spray I go round all the rooms in the house spraying tops of wardrobes. window sills, bed frames, and I buy peppermint oil to wipe over doors .I haven't seen too many so far, but if I find a big one Henry the hoover swallows it,,,It's either them or me they terrify me , they're getting bigger and faster.

The ‘Arachnaphobia’ film was horrendous to watch! Years later, I still wonder what possessed me to watch it!

We’ve not seen any yet, just the odd crane fly being annoying, MrJ doesn’t like spiders, I pick them up and put them outside.

Is still a mystery to me why any big spiders in the vicinity run straight towards me, and oh boy are they fast.

Maremia Tue 23-Sept-25 13:38:44

Those spiders in our homes are eating something. If we get rid of them, will their prey increase and spread?

Huntsmen could give you a nasty bite but they won’t kill you like some of the nasty ones we get. There is one that causes your skin to rot, horrible. Funnel web spiders are poisonous and so are red backs. Just avoid them. They don’t seek you out - they bite you by accident, like snakes. I never touch any of our spiders, pays to be cautious.

Horse chestnuts on the windowsill will stop garden spiders getting in. House spiders will die if you put them outside. They wont hurt you and will scurry away to hide out of sight. They are a good thing to have as they trap and eat other household insects.

Our daughter is phobic after a huge one fell on her head whilst she was having a shower a few years ago.
I bought her a spider catcher when she was at University. She lives alone again now and isn’t keen on going in the garage.
I read that Cellar spiders ( I used to call them holiday spiders as only saw them in the countryside) eat the huge spiders. I have seen recent evidence of a dead one in a much smaller cellar spider’s web!

I just changed the bed and a big one fell out. I thought he was dead but he ran under the bed. How am I going to sleep now?

Oh no!
I wouldn’t be able to sleep in that bed. Would have to sleep in the guest room.
Reminds me of a story my DD told me about time she spent in India after finishing uni, she was sleeping for 2 weeks in a bedroom in the house of a family friend, one day she got up and saw a massive spider on the wall, the family friend disposed of it then moved her bed to look for any other creepy crawlies to discover a big web under her bed. The thought of her sleeping whilst that massive spider lurked under her bed made my blood run cold.

I'm worried about Fred who lives in our downstairs cloakroom. There doesn't seem to be much to eat in there, occasionally I find a dead fly and leave it out for him.

kircubbin2000 Tue 23-Sept-25 21:03:48

I wonder what they eat.

Allira Tue 23-Sept-25 21:04:17

Flies, I presume

Allira Tue 23-Sept-25 21:07:51

"Will you walk into my parlour?" said a spider to a fly

mabon2 Wed 24-Sept-25 13:53:45

My friend puts horsechestnuts(conkers) in the corner of each room in her home, swears it keeps spiders at bay

Maremia Wed 24-Sept-25 14:00:32

Your pet spiders are a natural pest control, because they eat flies, mosquitoes, cockroaches, moths, ants and fleas. They reduce the need for chemical pesticides.

mokryna Wed 24-Sept-25 14:20:36

Don’t believe living in a flat will be the end of spiders, I can speak, unfortunately, from experience but then I am only on the third floor.
I won’t leave the windows open, I have to spider watch when airing a room. They come through from behind the plugs and light fittings. Conkers don’t deter them either.

SillyNanny321 Wed 24-Sept-25 14:43:35

Said further up that I like Cellar spiders as they will take a much bigger one easily! Before my fav Cellar spider died I watched her dispose of a big spider I couldnt get to with a catcher! Thats why I dont mind Cellar spiders so much as others.

I don’t agree with family scaring us about spiders as children . My mum was scared of spiders BUT much more scared of mice . She would stand on a chair if she set eyes on a mouse and scream her head off😂. I on the other hand am not in the slightest bit scared of mice and could hold one if I needed to . The spider thing has skipped a generation and now my adult daughter screams for me to get spiders , wasps or any other creepy creatures. She also has a small hoover for catching them .

Alison333 Wed 24-Sept-25 15:20:14

I've found fewer spiders since I started using plug-in electric deterrents. They send out ultrasonic waves which encourage spiders to move house.

Some are audible to humans, others not and they might be difficult to use in a house with pets, so it's not a complete answer.
