most nights I am awake at 3 in the morning and I find my mind goes for a ramble. is it just me who has random weird thoughts or does anyone else? Last nights thoughts were;

as all the banks seem to be closing, in a few years time will bank robbers be a thing of the past?

having had many caravan holidays and awoken by gulls banging on the roof, where did gulls go before caravans were invented?

why are fir trees Christmas trees? why not rose trees, or orange trees or oak trees?

Some interesting albeit bizarre thoughts there poppysmum. I’m curious as to why I can fall asleep whilst reading at which point my OH will gently nudge me so I can remove my reading glasses, put down my kindle and settle down………..only to find that I am then wide awake and cannot get to sleep. This happens quite often and obviously tonight is one of those nights.

You don’t hear of bank robbers because most banks no longer hold much cash - it is all online. We have the ridiculous situation here where some banks are unable to give out cash to their customers because they simply haven’t got enough.It is all online fraud these days. There was a phone in to our local radio about this recently. If my bank did that I would be leaving them immediately and changing to another one.

I was wide awake (and yet dog-tired) at 2am and my mind wandered, of it's own accord, to turning over the avalanche of Budget predictions and speculations.

Not an optimistic exercise in the wee small hours!

Apparently the human body is at its lowest ebb in the early hours. A time when all problems seem insurmountable. Best thing to do is get up, make a cup of tea and read for a while.

I too have random thoughts in the early hours. It seems to be linked to your body's state of being half asleep.
I am reading 'Why we Sleep' at the moment. It doesn't help when you are awake at stupid o'clock, but it answers lots of questions about the need for a good night's sleep. Can you take a nap during the day?

I purposefully go to bed and sleep by 9.30 p.m. Like that I get a good 5 hours in before I get that middle of the night waking. If I get up, I am done for. A quick trip to the loo and then back to the mind ramblings. I eventually fall asleep again and get up at 7 a.m.

I would imagine most older people are awake at stupid times. I know I am. It seems to affect women more than men, who seem to sleep like babies in the day as well as at night when they get older.
At least your musings are about harmless things. My awake-in-the-middle-of-the-night thoughts are nasty ones, centering around my illness. I find getting up, making a cup of tea and watching mindless tv while I drink it, helps me to get back to sleep. Daytime naps are a no-no for me as I found that I couldn’t get off to sleep at night if I slept in the day.
What I refuse to do is resort to sleeping pills.
