I have posted on the “things I have never done” thread but it got me to wondering what unusual/ unexpected things you have come upon.
Once, when my H and I were walking in Devon, we came across a couple making love/ having sex in a field on a cliff top.
They were just off a footpath .
It is difficult to say who was more embarrassed.
We just said,oh excuse us, and carried on walking.

We used to have a house in a village with several streams running through and a lot of ducks - and a lot of jackdaws that predated the ducklings.

One year one of the ducks decided to build a nest behins some conifers in our garden and she had a brood of 7 ducklings. The jackdaws never found them, but she was faced with the problem of how to get out of our garden and down to the stream.

DH saw the duck and ducklings on the patio near the back door. He immediately realised the problem so opened the backdoor and then went and opened the front door which was in line with back door and the mother duck waddled through the house, followed by her brood in line behind her. Once out at the front she was able to access the stream.

DH took photos of the ducks waddling through the hall.

We used to have a large pond MOnica and every year for several years the duck parents would bring their young family to swim in the water. This involved a longish walk along the pavement beside a main road. Each evening the little family would waddle off along the pavement. They were a delight to see.

Whilst driving quite slowly along a foggy country road in an unfamiliar area I thought I was seeing things when a Buddhist monk in saffron robes emerged out of the gloom. (I later learned that there was a monastery nearby.)

I was driving down a quiet country lane when a golf ball hit my windscreen and caused a small crack. As it obviously came from the only house that was anywhere near, I went and knocked on the door.

A woman answered and aggressively denied all knowledge of how the golf ball came to be whizzing out of her garden. In the end I had to give up and I ended up paying for the repair.

A few years back, I drove out into the back lane to find a man lying right across the path. At first, I thought he was dead, but he was actually blind drunk. Turned out he was an alcoholic and his wife thought he was at an AA meeting! Instead, he'd necked a bottle of vodka and passed out drunk in our lane.

I woke up one morning to find a bat nestled into the beams above our bed.

Just thought of another strange sight.
Sitting in my daughter’s dining room one afternoon we looked up to see a cow happily munching on her lawn. As we opened the door it trotted off . A police car suddenly arrived and asked if we had seen a cow, we pointed and shouted “it went that way. “ At which point we and the policemen burst into laughter.

I once woke up to find a herd of cows in our paddock. Not really all that unexpected if you live in the country and a quick circuit of the village soon found the farmer.

On holiday in Portugal we came across scorpions on path round the swimming pool one evening.
No night time swims after that!

I went to pick up a tea bag from the sink only it wasn’t a tea bag. It was a bat 🦇

I slept with a ladybird last night. It didn’t seem yo mind and flew away happily when I put it outside.
Like Babs both my sister and I remember our snake incident.
I was 6 she was 3 and I left her on her tricycle and ran away when a big snake crossed the road in front of us. It wasn’t remotely interested in us,thank goodness. Mum was somewhere behind us and we just carried on with our outing. We were in Nigeria.
DD lives in Aus and I’m on the lookout for snakes when we go and visit but the only time I’ve seen one since was when we were in Cambridge botanical gardens, happily curled up in the sunshine. She was with us so it was quite funny to have the tables turned.

M0nica, That was so thoughtful and kind of DH to do that for mum and babes!

Some years ago, I rented a cottage in the countryside for a short while. All the time I was home, I left the windows open, and each and every day, 7 days a week, without fail, 2 huge cows would come by and poke their heads through the living room windows, even when it was pouring with rain and freezing cold!

I told them what beautiful ladies they are and how very intelligent, always made a great big fuss of them, stroking their gorgeous faces. I absolutely loved them and really missed them when my tenancy was up, but I told them one week before going that I was leaving and I'd miss them but would always think of them!

We have a cherry tree whose branches come fairly close to our bedroom window. One day I looked out to see a swarm of bees in the tree just a few feet away. We didn’t tell any neighbours, since some would almost certainly have thought it dangerous and wanted them destroyed.

We did inform the local beekeepers society though, in case anyone wanted to take the swarm.

But before anyone could come, the bees had gone, evidently to a desirable residence elsewhere.

TheWeirdoAgain60, how lovely!

I'm 60 now, and I can still clearly remember being 8. I was one of those who always took my own lunch instead of scoffing the muck the dinner ladies served up.

I'd put a yoghurt in my lunch box with a load of fruit and a bit of veg that I'd pick myself from the field next door - with the farmer's permission, of course! -as I don't like bread of any sort, so I never had sandwiches, etc.

One day in the school canteen, the entire place was shaken by my ear-piercing screams, hysterics and running off at speed as a whopping great 8-legged thing was sitting under the fruit when I took the lid off!

I couldn't get near the box or food and asked someone else to take it! From then on, I only took a yoghurt in a transparent plastic bag, no fruit or veg!

I'm still phobic of ''those things'' to this day!

TheWeirdoAgain60 Wed 01-Oct-25 09:53:56

Witzend Thank you! Certainly was! I still regularly think about my cows, whom I called ''my beloved babies'' now!

This has reminded me of the time I looked out of the kitchen window to see seven deer in the garden!

Car park at work, late morning it had been snowing and the ground frozen ( very small car park). Someone came in and said come and look at this….. as the sun shone more the ground had defrosted and all the cars had slid a small distance. It had to be seen to be appreciated, no proliferation of mobile phones with cameras in those days.

We were driving to Portrush many years ago. I saw an elephant in a field. My husband insisted I was seeing things. When we got to Portrush the circus was in town so I HAD seen it.

My dear departed husband and I were on holiday in a beautiful hotel in Pennington,South Africa, when a small money came in through the bathroom window, hurried over to the table in the sitting room, went off with two bananas in a trice!!

Driving to uni one morning (I was a mature student) I saw three elephants in a field that usually held cows or ponies. I thought I was seeing things and went round the round about again to have another look!

I came across an old school friend from Scotland that I'd not seen in about 30 years, when I was touring the USA, and in this out-of-the-way motel in New Mexico I bumped into a lady, said 'sorry, excuse me', she turned round and it was my old pal!
