I have posted on the “things I have never done” thread but it got me to wondering what unusual/ unexpected things you have come upon.
Once, when my H and I were walking in Devon, we came across a couple making love/ having sex in a field on a cliff top.
They were just off a footpath .
It is difficult to say who was more embarrassed.
We just said,oh excuse us, and carried on walking.

An unusual sight to the car ahead of us during a drive home in a storm in France.

A huge branch had fallen, blocking the narrow country road. DH asked me to try to move it to the side of the road.

It was bucketing with rain so I stripped off so keep my clothes dry. As I was trying to move the branch, a car approached from the opposite side! A chap got out to help me and we parted company.

I wonder what went through his mind. At least I had dry warm clothes to get into!

It was a horrible storm and we had to stop twice because we couldn't see the road due to the rain.

In South Africa my dad and us girls were walking down a mountain when dad, at the front of us, shouted suddenly "TwinLolly, watch out!". I was in mid-step and somehow altered my leg's course before it touched the ground. I nearly stepped on a black mamba or Cape cobra - I can't remember which. I was extremely lucky otherwise it could have bitten me. They are highly venemous.

It's not the best of photos, but this is a couple of the deer who were visiting our garden some years back...

Who'd think we lived in the middle of town

I love lying in bed listening to the foxes barking and the owls hooting. We see deer most mornings too. Such delicate frail looking creatures and very nervous too. Gorgeous.

DD and I were driving around deepest rural France. About a mile out of a village we saw two old ladies sitting smoking by the side of the road. DD sound down the window to ask directions and burst out laughing as the car was filled with cannabis fumes!

The first night OH and I slept in our newly converted barn we were woken up at 3am by a screaming edible dormouse ( a loir in French, very pretty) rushing around the beams. It went on for ages as it was too high up to do anything about it. In the autumn when the walnut trees were dropping their nuts the loir would wake us up by rolling them down the roof. The countryside is very noisy. At the moment the stage are in full rut. I love lying in bed and listening to them.

My favourite of all time was when we were on a leisurely drive through our country lanes when, passing through a village a Dalek drove out of someone's front drive and down the road. It was so life like. I literally screamed with joy. It made several guest appearances that year at the local church fetes.

I do craft classes with a lady who’s husband runs a hobby shop and this last year his project has been rebuilding a dalek that he bought at an auction.
I’ve loved seeing it being recreated and it’s all finished now complete with its voice!

Coming back on our boat from a trip on the Norfolk broads late. We saw a big search light on a bridge ahead. It turned out a calf had fallen in the water. The fire engine crewed asked us to help by steering over to the rowing boat where a man was holding the calf's head out of the water. He told us he couldn't hold on any longer and passed the rope to me! The calf was sooo heavy, but I knew if I let go it would sink and drown, so I held on till my H steered our boat to the slipway, where the fire crew were, they took over from me. We waited for the farmer to come to pick up the stray calf, the farmer just 'chucked' the calf in the back of his cattle truck, no hay, no hug, poor calf!

How lovely, wondering if the duck did it again the following year

Mo Your story reminded me of similar. When living in Africa, we had a 'barn door' in the kitchen. I had the top part open whilst cooking dinner, something caught my eye, I looked round to see a big monkey sitting on the open half door, looking at me as if to say "hurry up with dinner mum".

When we first moved in, we would hear this strange noise every night and couldn't work out what it was; turned out it was the monkeys. We had banana trees in the garden, so no doubt that's what they were after.

I used to work flexi hours and liked to get there really early then I could go home mid afternoon I used to cycle to work
One day I was cycling down the road, no traffic around when I was overtaken by what I thought was a big Labrador but soon realised it was a muncjak which ran through the next opening which went straight to the beach
Another time walking along the beach I found a little hedgehog pottering along I brought him home as the beach is not a good environment for a hedgehog but although my garden is totally enclosed on all sides I never saw him again

BladeAnnie what a beautiful photo, little Bambi at peace with the world for a while. These moments are so special and to be treasured.

Just thought of another strange sight.
Sitting in my daughter’s dining room one afternoon we looked up to see a cow happily munching on her lawn. As we opened the door it trotted off . A police car suddenly arrived and asked if we had seen a cow, we pointed and shouted “it went that way. “ At which point we and the policemen burst into laughter.

Years ago when I was a student a group of us were driving back to Oxford after an evening in Witney. We came across a cow that had escaped from a field and had been hit by a car. The car was badly damaged but we were concerned that the cow, which appeared fairly unharmed, might get hit again so we spent some time rounding it up into someone's front gsrden and shut the gate hoping it would be safe there. It was before the days of mobile phones so we couldn't let anyone know. I wonder what the householder thought finding a cow in their gsrden next morning.

Marydoll

Every Thursaday , my colleagues and I used to go for a walk in the country roads above our school.
There was nothing but fields and a dam, but one evening, from out of a hedge, emerged aman in a dark suit, shirt, tie, wearing a bowler hat and carrying an umbrella.

It was totally surreal, for we had no idea where he came from.

Was it John Cleese Marydoll? 😅

Not as exciting as all the naked men etc but, as a Bambi fan, I was overjoyed that this little one came to spend a lovely sunny afternoon in our garden

A donkey appeared in our front garden, eating the flowers, having wandered into the housing estate from a farm some distance away

While staying at a home in a remote woodsy area, I opened a drawer in the kitchen and was startled to find a possum hiding there!

I worked in a day nursery the garden and our side areas would be checked every morning for safety. One day after children had had breakfast and were let out into the garden there were two dead gold fish in the middle of the flagged area. No pond, only a meadow behind and a primary and upper school to the sides!

Dropped by a heron I expect.

On his way home, going up our very long access drive, on a sharp corner, OH had to brake hard to avoid a family having a picnic, complete with rugs, cushions, free-range children. If our nearest neighbour had been coming down the drive ,he would have had difficulty missing them. The family were rather reluctant to move out of the way..
A lovely memory from the Galapagos was seeing a seal pup going up to a scuba diver in a black wet suit and flippers, and batting the man on the leg. We couldn't work out if it was a case of feed me, play with me or or Mum said get back with the rest of us. It was the one time I didn't have my camera with me.

My daughter and I went out to catch a musical show in town, we were early and parked on a side street waiting to go in. A man in his thirties (I think) sat on a wall and proceeded to open his trousers and started to openly masterbate. I was so angry I got out of the car and shouted “hey put that away you’ve not got anything worth showing off, take it home” he soon scarpered down the road. I then got a lecture from my daughter about how I should have ignored it and remained in the car for my safety. I can
Laugh about it now but at the time I was so incensed I speak the way I find.

We rented a private villa in Ibiza.
Arrived late afternoon to find a random couple naked sunbathing at our pool!

DaisyLa your moonlight 🌙 experience brought back my lovely moonlight experience.
I was driving home in the early hours when the moon illuminated several badgers playing in the middle of the country road. I stopped to watch this magical scene, until the badgers sauntered away. Unforgettable.

We were on holiday in Greece and I woke up to feel something crawling on me! I threw back the covers and there was a tiny green lizard. We were both as scared as each other!
