Am I the only one who can’t understand why people seem to need to announce that they are going to g to the loo ?
Why not just say” excuse me, I’ll not be long” or words to that effect and return quietly having made yourself comfortable.

BlueBelle Tue 07-Oct-25 20:12:53

I ve never thought of it but yes I always say ‘won’t be a minute just going to the loo’ and to be honest I can’t see a problem people know where I am and I haven’t just wandered off
What’s the actual problem Ginny ?

AGAA4 Tue 07-Oct-25 20:39:46

Most people I know just get up and go. It's fairly obvious where they are going.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 07-Oct-25 21:22:51

I always say ‘just going to spend a penny’. Silly really but it’s an ingrained habit now!

Primrose53 Tue 07-Oct-25 21:32:36

Ladies used to say “just going to powder my nose.” 🤣

I found myself explaining this saying to the Gdcs recently. Yes, if you wanted to go to a public loo, you had to put one of those big old pennies in the slot to,open the door!

Which I’m afraid led me to telling them this quaint little ditty:

‘Here I sit, broken hearted,
Paid a penny and only farted.’

M0nica Tue 07-Oct-25 21:38:12

Seems straight forward. if you get up and walk out of a room it is only polite to say why you are leaving, otherwise it could appear qute rude.

If I am entertaining guests and preparing a meal I will say Excuse me, I must just check on the food. What is thedifference? It is a perfectly normal activity that everyone performs, no detail is needed, just use your usual euphamism, a comfort stop or visit, powedering your nose, going to the loo (my preferred phrase). it is only good manners.

BlueBelle Tue 07-Oct-25 21:41:12

Well is it silly FGT? I would find it a bit rude to just get up and disappear for a few minutes why not say why you are leaving the room, the table or whatever

Mollygo Tue 07-Oct-25 21:41:26

Witzend 🤣🤣🤣
Your quaint little ditty
ditty:

^Here I sit, broken hearted,
Paid a penny and only farted.^

Reminded DH of a joke he used to tell which had that as a punchline.

A few years ago, it was pointed out to me that this phrase can have other connotations.....!

Mollygo Tue 07-Oct-25 21:43:09

Do tell, Ashcombe.
I don’t know the other connotations

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Tue 07-Oct-25 21:48:31

Thank you Bluebelle. 🙂 not silly then!

Witzend that was witty!

No big problem, just irritates me for some reason. As I said, I would excuse my self for a moment but I don’t announce where I am going.

Casdon Tue 07-Oct-25 21:52:19

I prefer people to say they are going to the bathroom/lavatory/toilet/loo or whatever they call it, to those who say ‘I’m just popping to the little boy’s/girl’s room’ - that is really cringy.

Anniebach Tue 07-Oct-25 21:59:46

To walk away from your companions without an explanation is
rude, leaves people wondering if you are ok .

ginny Tue 07-Oct-25 22:10:52

As I said , just excuse yourself . No need to go into detail.

Allira Tue 07-Oct-25 22:44:13

‘Here I sit, broken hearted,

I remember that one Witzend. 😁

Yes, if I get up from the table when out in company I'd say I was just popping to the loo.
But never in the middle of a meal!

eddiecat78 Tue 07-Oct-25 22:50:13

We need to stop being coy about needing the toilet. Everyone does it and yet we still feel embarrassed about it.
Being someone with chronic bowel problems my life would be a lot easier if I didn't feel I have to keep my issues to myself

Allira Tue 07-Oct-25 22:53:12

I don't think we're coy now.
This isn't Victorian times.

I love the way every day is a school day on GN because, as you hint, the modern use of this phrase has a double meaning.

The phrase was most famously used in Quentin Tarantino's film Pulp Fiction, where Mia Wallace (Urma Thurman) says "I'll go to the bathroom to powder my nose", and Tarantino plays on the double meaning.....

I won't be using this phrase in future .......

BlueBelle Tue 07-Oct-25 23:40:51

Well just saying ‘I m just popping to the loo’ is hardly going into details I not saying ‘I ve got a bit of a pain and might fxxx in a minute so I m going to the loo’ that would be details
🤣🤣🤣

Just different ideas I guess

nanna8 Wed 08-Oct-25 02:01:19

I’m awful - I say I am just going for a wee! Used to say ‘pee’ but I think that is a little coarse.

Seriously?

Cocaine is a powder that users sniff up their noses. I don’t partake myself, but I would have thought that was obvious 😀

BlueBelle Wed 08-Oct-25 07:17:06

Ginny you say you don’t want to announce where you’re going, may I ask why? do you have a problem with people knowing you need a wee. if you were getting up to look at a bird outside the window or if you were a smoking and getting up to go out for a few drags or if it was at home and you were cooking and needed to go and check the food would you be equally silent about the reason or isit just the loo you are coy about

GoodAfternoonTea Wed 08-Oct-25 07:19:24

What is wrong with 'Please excuse me for a moment'. ?
