What do you think when someone calls you rich (when you are rich)?

This subject has popped up on another thread.

Round these parts, in real life, if someone calls another person rich, we all grin at each other.

I never knew it was was a problem to some.
Cant see how it can be.
I dont get the problem.

I am wondering if it is different in different areas.
I live in a small rural area.
Fairly surrounded by second or fourth property owners.

Old money just keeps telling you how hard up they are🙄🤣🤣

I posted that I was concerned that the Eastern Europeans who cleaned my pool would go home.
Do you have a sauna, a Mercedes and room for a pony too Violet?
😂

The Eastern European who cleans my windows is still here, thankfully. I suppose I'd have to clean my own if I wasn't so rich.

eddiecat78 Wed 15-Oct-25 14:30:04

*fancy that" would you also have no hesitation in calling someone poor?
To my mind both poor and rich comments are intended to cause embarrassment to the accused.

Oreo

The only rich thing in our household is a pack of rich tea biscuits.

😂

I’m afraid the pony had to go: all that cost of living hooha.
But I’m not giving up the 2 Mercedes 😱

The thing is it's all comparative isn't it.

The person who lives in the rented cottage at the top of the road probably thinks we are rich but the land owner with the triple barrelled surname who lives at the bottom of
the road seems rich to me.

When I worked as a volunteer in a charity shop one of the other volunteers would constantly show off about how much money she and her husband were getting per month from their private pensions, how much their bungalow had been valued at, and how much she spent on fancy cruises every year etc. The funny thing was that when we all went out together at night to have a meal or go to the cinema she would be the last person to buy anyone a drink or give a tip, still I suppose that is how she managed to hold onto her stash. Sadly she was very unpopular and nobody grieved too much when she and her other half went to live nearer to her son.

Oh, sad ☹
We all have to tighten our Gucci belts somehow!

This sounds very familiar and quite common...

I’d button up if you think you are wealthy because you won’t be wealthy for much longer. The November budget will sort that out ….

M0nica Wed 15-Oct-25 20:41:46

How rich. Is rich: Being above pension credit level? Owning a detached house? And takng lots of exotic holidays? Buying a new car?

Unless you cam define rich, it is difficult to discuss. I have friends at both ends of the spectrum, one on PC, another on a pension twice as large as I ever earned. Neither income defines the person.

CanadianGran Wed 15-Oct-25 20:56:08

Wealth is subjective; it seem there is always someone who has more.

If the people in the neighbourhood were truly wealthy, the money conversation would never occur, nor the knowing grins.

There's the nice car in a nice neighbourhood rich, then there's the fly a private jet to my place in Monaco rich.

Delila Wed 15-Oct-25 21:09:04

Why on earth would people talk to each other about how rich they are, and think that it’s an interesting topic?

What is the significance of the shared grin?

petra Wed 15-Oct-25 21:22:53

I think it would be easier to herd cats than understand the OP.

Harris27 Wed 15-Oct-25 21:26:40

Won’t ever affect me!

RosieandherMaw Wed 15-Oct-25 21:30:56

What a nasty thread!
Implicit criticism, inverted snobbery, nosiness into other people's business and every possible opportunity to make snide comments.

That’s what’s bugging me , that I don’t understand the shared grin. 😁

Please fancythat come back and tell me?

Did you have to eat the poor pony, just to survive, Petra? wink

No one has ever called me rich to my face so, fortunately, I have never had to spend any time thinking about what I think of their comment.

Ginnytonic5 Wed 15-Oct-25 21:50:11

Ashcombe
A police officers spouse would gets two thirds of the pension after death .. if they were to remarry they get nothing.

BlueBelle Wed 15-Oct-25 22:25:11

Well I m ok cos I don’t know anyone rich
I don’t know what is rich to be honest ….Rich in love, rich in money, rich in family !
No one round here talks about money I haven’t a clue if my friends have money behind them or not, …. I just know I haven’t

I agree, RosieandherMaw, and also agree with your mention of envy earlier on.

I think it would be easier to herd cats than understand the OP. 🐈 🐈‍⬛️
You see, petra , I think I do understand because on the previous thread I was one of the two or three posters told by the OP of this thread when we challenged her on the rich comment,
"Seems to touch a nerve with some".
And "If you are that bothered by it give it
away".

I'm saying no more here, other than that it has been interesting watching the OP digging a deep hole for herself.

The food thread is actually chugging along quite nicely with some good comments. 🦃 🐔 🐄

So do people talk about it behind closed doors?

People say, do not talk about religion and politics.
Wealth is never mentioned as a taboo.

Wealth is mentioned as a taboo. The advice is to keep off religion, politics and money. All seen as infra dig in polite company.
Unless you’re American when you can be asked to your face what you earn.

Crossstitchfan Thu 16-Oct-25 01:32:29

A friend I have known since the 70s is very well off. Thankfully, she doesn’t boast about it and I only knew when she asked me the best place to invest some money (I was in banking some years ago). To be honest, I had never thought about how wealthy she might be. Is it normal to dwell on the financial situation of friends? I was always taught that it was vulgar to discuss wealth.

Sago Thu 16-Oct-25 09:09:14

Is it just me or am I being a bit thick?

I really do not understand the OP.

I have read it over and over, is fancythat trying to tell us she is in an elite moneyed clique or is she really stupid?

Oh and what about the third property owners?

Had you been on the breakfast wines when you posted fancythat?
