Has anyone shopped on Shein?
(66 Posts)Been looking to buy small craft items to use with grandchildren and came across Shein. Prices seem incredibly low so is there a catch?
I have had dresses, jumpers, trousers, blouses, swimsuits, everything was ok except swimsuits they were baggy.
I suspect many items craft or otherwise sold in UK shops - including the kind of shops that sell craft items, lets say places like The Range, B&M etc, source their goods from China. So what’s the difference? All you’re doing is cutting out the middleman/UK retailer who has rent/wages etc to pay. Buying direct, is why its cheaper.
Lets face it, most of what we purchase, comes from China. So there is some hypocrisy here.
I love Shein, haven't bought crafting but would advise checking descriptions thoroughly. Looked all round my city centre and suburbs for a dress for a wedding, found nothing i would even want to try on. Looked on Shein on advice from daughters. Bought 3 for £8 each and had amazing compliments.
I've bought loads from both of them over the years. Temu tends to be my first stop because so many Amazon sellers buy from there themselves. So when I see an item that costs £20-£25 on amazon and only £5 or £6 on Temu I buy from Temu because every little helps.
I've had a couple of things not as I expected or arrive broken but their customer service is exactly like anywhere else. Their returns are efficient and I've saved enough buying on there to fund my bulb and bedding plant habits.

I hate the fact that they are blatantly plegerising British companies goods, and I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole either. It's all very well to say that purchases are supporting workers who may not have a job, but what about British firms who may go under because they are being undermined with such cheap prices, then their workers would be out of a job. China have a habit of stealing other countries designs for various goods then selling them much cheaper. I have never found a Mark's label saying made in China. Lots of other places in the world, but not China. But then I try not to buy anything with palm oil in it either
I agree with you, but I have bought fountain pens from Ali express and they're excellent. Someone told me the Chinese gov't subsidises things so they sell more and maintain employment, I don't know if that's true or not.
Whatever, it isn't fair on uk businesses but even if you buy something in a shop here it's probably been made in china. I need a toilet brush but its really hard to get a uk made one
I used them once a few years ago , the item was cheap rubbish , it’s Chinese I think and very difficult to get rid of them I found
If, as I believe, Schein like Temu is based in China, you will have difficulty returning faulty goods - or at least it will cost so much in postage that you probably will not bother.
I haven't shopped on Schein, but have once or twice bought things from Temu (because I could not find them anywhere else, or not at a price I was willing to give.) The quality is not good, but I suppose it is a case of getting what you paid for.
AuntieE I bought some t shirts from Shein and when they arrived there were 3 garments instead of the advertised 4. I immediately contacted them and was refunded half the cost and advised to keep the garments I had received. All done within 2 hours of delivery. Good service, I thought. Also, the items I have ordered have been good quality.
Yes. I asked a friend where her daughter had got this lovely crocheted top from in a holiday pic and she said “Shein”. Well, I was recovering from a hysterectomy and bored so went on their site. I got a similar crocheted top, a couple of dresses and other tops. I thought they’d be rubbish plus my daughter was horrified from an ethical pov. Anyway, the things arrived a week or so later. I was very surprised to find all the items were very good quality. I used to go to actual China quite a lot before retiring and the quality of their tailoring if you have stuff done there, is very good. So with this “haul” I just had to take up two of the dresses which were way too long and used the unwanted fabric to make neck scarves!!! I don’t know if I would order from them again but I was very surprised at how good the quality was. Same for CupShe, the bikini and swimsuit brand, which make surprisingly good swimwear…

Yes, the catch with Shein is that their products are shite 🤣
My 25 year old daughter has stopped buying from them.
There's no catch, the majority of it is sold on ebay, amazon and in a lot of shops, you're basically cutting out them middle man which is why it's so cheap.
Its mixed bag and I'd advise always checking reviews, but the majority of what I buy is what I expected.
And example of a recent purchase, I bought some acrylic paint pens on Amazon that cost £15. My grandkids decided they wanted some so I looked on Shein and Temu, I ended up buying them from Shein and the looked identical. I half expected them to be different to the picture but when they arrived they're exactly the same as their ones I got on Amazon.
The only difference? I paid £6 on Shein.
Both Shein and Temu do free returns. I return a lot of stuff with no problems.
You are missing out on paying import duties because they exploit a loophole in our taxes.
I think I read that the government has plans to close this...?
My friends twenrysomething daughters regularly buy from Shein without a problem .
One of them is about a size 20 and they fit her .
I agree with crazyH .
The company provides work for people .But if they didn't - where else would these poor people get employment ?
If you want craft items to use with children, have a look at the Baker Ross website. British-based, therefore not relying on slave-labour, and you actually get what you order!
I was wary but ordered something for a camping trip from Temu as it was exactly what I needed and was very good value. I used a credit card I don't often use as I was worried about scams but everything went ok. I've since bought clothing but I do feel guilty about the workers. Unfortunately I can't afford to pay more at present. I bought a pack of three tops and despite the fact that one is a colour I won't wear the price for the other two was still very low. The other will either go to the charity shop or I may try vinted. I haven't used Shein but the ethical problems are clearly the same.
I bought a dress from a company calling themselves Mint London. After I ordered it I realised it was coming from China. It eventually arrived and the material and colour were good but it was sewn together wrongly and could not be worn. I contacted them about returning the item. Although it had said easy returns they told me it was too difficult and expensive to send it back. They offered me a refund of 10%. This eventually went up to 50% which I accepted. This was several months ago and I am still waiting. Meanwhile they have stopped communicating with me.
I am very careful now about ordering online.

I hate to burst your bubble Re the saintly M&S but they have 232 factories in China.
They have manufacturing plants in 30 countries most of which would pass the human rights test.

When ordering from a company you don’t know, use this website.
You will see there is a search option on the site.

I have had some lovely clothes from Shein but often found the material too hot and sweaty for living in a hot climate.
Temu has been great though, not so much for clothes, but shoes, boots and household items. Never been disappointed apart from a dress that was horrible material so I requested a refund which was sent immediately and I was told I didn’t need to return the item. I put it in a clothes recycling collection bin.
Plenty of adverse comments on here - I particularly noticed that Shein clothes are "shite". In that case, I often wear shite clothes which are admired and I feel good in them. I've been very happy with various clothes I've bought, as has my beautiful DIL who looked fabulous at DD's wedding recently. I have a particular item of jewellery that always draws admiring comments - £1.20. Delivery is quick, no problem with returns. Definitely a "don't knock it til you've tried it" thing, as long as you can see it as providing jobs for those who may not otherwise have them and you're not a clothing snob. I must say I do a little secret smile when a Shein number gets admired!
I agree, GrammaH - I bought a few things from Shein last summer when we were going to Corfu for my daughter's wedding, including a floaty, light top which I thought would be ideal for going out to dinner. I've since worn it both there and at home and had compliments on it every time.
Ive bought lots of items from Shein and Temu. Only had one item that I didnt like, and gave it too a friend who loved it. I'm on a fixed budget but like to look good , and have bought some very pretty dresses, and last week bought two jumpers which I'm very pleased with.
If you can afford to be a clothes snob ok lucky you. Just bought a smart leather look handbag for £4 delighted with it.
