Many years ago while working late we saw a young girl being manhandled into a lorry in the lane opposite .My co worker went across to distract the guy while I called the police.
They turned up in minutes but they picked her up for apparently soliciting and waved him on his way.The assault was dismissed.
I wish I didn’t have to believe that, but I do.
When my neighbour reported a man for exposing himself, near a local school, they asked her what she was wearing and had she stopped to look?
It's more complicated than that. I don't think she would have been charged with anything as the police need evidence she was soliciting, unless it has changed since I worked for the vice squad. She was probably taken somewhere safe to check her age and if she'd been reported missing.
With men yes I've done the court paperwork where men have been arrested but you need evidence, not just that they are driving round. Usually it was a policewoman in plain clothes being approached by a man but he would have to make it clear he was wanting to buy sex and most men would talk in euphemisms so a lot of effort would go, the policewoman and probably a team of two watching from a distance to ensure she was safe, and not great results.
Making a case against pimps was even more time consuming.
It can all be done but do we have enough police, are we willing to pay for enough police, if you are burgled or mugged can you promise you won't complain about police wasting their time on what consenting adults are doing?
