Had our horse put to sleep this morning

Our lovely old girl, well in her 30s had to be PTS this morning. My daughter went down to feed her and she was laying down in her field shelter and breathing heavily.
Couldn’t get up and not interested in her food.

I then went down and we called the vet who luckily was not far away. We all knew it was the right time and the vet was very kind to my daughter and her horse.

I am now waiting for her body to be collected.

That’s the end of an era and no more horses for us as since his stroke my husband has been unable to ride and his horse was PTS about 2 years ago. They have lovely memories of hacking out and endurance riding and hundreds of photos.

Oh Primrose you will all be sorrowful. These animals we grow to love take a tiny piece of our hearts when they leave us.

I'm sorry to hear about your horse, Primrose, 30+ years is a very good age and she was obviously much loved by you all.

It's very hard to lose a beloved animal.

It’s sorry but a good age in a loving home.
My daughter’s miniature Shetland , only 8, recently cut a leg and damaged the tendon. The vet immediately said the choice was expensive surgery or euthanasia. Off she went to a fabulous equine hospital for an operation and a week’s nursing. The girls there adored her and her care was hugely better than we would get under the NHS.
All the time she was away her companion called for her and now they are together again for her long recovery.
I hope this story gives you a little smile, Primrose.

Thank you, that’s lovely and did make me smile! I hope she has made a full recovery.

We had a small grey pony when my daughter was younger and she cut her leg badly when she got it stuck in a hay net and then shot away dragging a large piece of fencing with her! Our vet did a great job and she lived many more years.

It’s terribly sad when we lose a beloved pet, especially after you had the horse for over 30 years. Your daughter will be bereft. So sorry. 🥀

Primrose53 I'm literally in tears here.

I'm so very sorry about your lovely lady horse, and also about your husband's horse, too.

RIP, both gorgeous horses, fly over the Rainbow Bridge, but remember you'll forever be loved and remembered. X X

💐💐💐Genuinely feel so sad for you, I am still coming to terms with having my beautiful golden retriever PTS two weeks ago. The vet was fantastic she came to our house and even brought a lovely basket adorned with white flowers to take her away. It's an awful thing to go through.

Visgir1 Wed 22-Oct-25 09:57:41

Deepest sympathy to you. This is a big loss.
We are a family who have had Horses, it heartbreaking when they go. 💐

TillyTrotter Wed 22-Oct-25 10:41:07

Elless 💐
Vets are v compassionate, they hate putting animals to sleep. 😥

Athrawes Wed 22-Oct-25 11:36:28

That's so sad. But you've done the right thing.
I've had to say goodbye to 'old friends' recently and it's hardbreaking - my daughter and I wept buckets but it was the right thing to do and there were lots of happy memories to remember - though I still fill up occasionally

DamaskRose Wed 22-Oct-25 15:15:42

I’m so sorry Primrose thanks

ginny Wed 22-Oct-25 15:19:23

My sympathy joins all our friends' here.
You are feeling specially sad that there are no more horses for you and your DH. Sometimes the forward look can seem empty.
