Had our horse put to sleep this morning

Our lovely old girl, well in her 30s had to be PTS this morning. My daughter went down to feed her and she was laying down in her field shelter and breathing heavily.
Couldn’t get up and not interested in her food.

I then went down and we called the vet who luckily was not far away. We all knew it was the right time and the vet was very kind to my daughter and her horse.

I am now waiting for her body to be collected.

That’s the end of an era and no more horses for us as since his stroke my husband has been unable to ride and his horse was PTS about 2 years ago. They have lovely memories of hacking out and endurance riding and hundreds of photos.

Oh Primrose, my heart feels for you!!our pets are such an integral part of our lives and give unconditional love (well, most of them do!). A very special hug from Suffolk🤗

When my much loved black lab was pts the vet was so kind snd gentle, he said it was the last act of love I could do for my friend. I have had many cats pts, I remember them all and still miss them . Animals( large or small) can find a way into our hearts.

We have had this horse for about 24 years. It will leave a huge hole in all our lives.

When we had our little grey pony put to sleep before her, she was buried in the field. It was like something from the Waltons or a Disney film. Two Jacob sheep and another pony all stood round her grave with their heads hanging down just staring at the spot. Never seen anything like it. 😢

It is really sad when one’s pet comes to the end of its life.
I used to ride when younger although my mother had quite a few horses.
Tilly, my son’s family cat was also put to sleep this week as she had cancer of the lungs and also would not eat. She was a stray kitten when they were on a two year contract working in Doha around 1910. She kept coming to the apartment they were renting. They kept her and paid to bring her back with them to NZ.

So sorry to hear this. I know how you must be feeling. I lost my old horse some years ago but I still remember the day he was PTS, vividly. It is soul destroying to lose a close pet. I had my boy from a foal until he was 26. I was 11 when I had him so he had been in my life for such a long time. I didn't know what I would do without him. I have always loved horses and I am fortunate to be able to spend time with my friend's horses so I can still enjoy them, but my old boy will always be 'the one'. Hope you can rest easy knowing your girl had a good life.

My heart goes out to you and your family Primrose. It's so hard to let them go on, but what a great age she made. I'm glad she got to go in a peaceful way with her family. Big hugs to you and yours. xx

So sorry to hear this, I had ponies when I was young, but never had to take the sad decision. However, I have said goodbye to three dogs, luckily my DH was still in practice and he put them to sleep. Your horse sounds wonderful. flowers

I watched the end of The Horse of the Year tonight and Matt Baker recited "The Ode to the Horse," which closes the show every year.. I always find it very moving and I start to well up. This year I thought of Primrose53 and I was tearier than ever.thanks

Oh thank you for your kind thoughts Magenta8.
We are slowly getting along without her but she has left a massive hole. We are sorting out feed, salt licks, haylage, rugs etc and finding good homes for anything useful to others. It’s especially sad for my daughter.😢
