Pride in your country

The effort and dedication these women put in to making thousands of poppies to display in their church in Worcester shows more pride in their country than all the tatty nylon flags dangling off lampposts put together. The message is clearly pride and remembrance.

Jaxjacky you will be very moved by it - scarily realistic.

I want to put in a word for pillar box toppers. The scenes of British life that they portray show a real pride in our way of life, and the skill and creativity of some of them is amazing.

I agree. They are topical and lots of hard work has been put into them ( and, dare I say, love?). They aren’t something that is made in China and bought via Amazon. Every time I see one it lifts my heart unlike shabby scruffy flags hanging from bridges that make my heart sink.

I believe the title of the Standing with Giants installations is :
"For your tomorrow". As sad as it is, I think that the biggest respect we can give is to maintain the peace they gave everything for. We owe them so much, and, without sounding too poetical, the main message is to look forward with hope to a better tomorrow.

I don’t wear a poppy for a variety of reasons. However, I find these poppy displays very dignified and unifying - a symbol of a common cause. Sad as they may make us, they serve a great purpose of helping us to remember.

It’s like these breathtaking Standing with Giants displays. Really makes you stop and think of the sacrifice and sadness many families endured.

Booked to visit at Fort Nelson

At this time of year I remember all those who have fallen and have been affected by war. I don’t wear a poppy but I always light a candle and remember.

Rosemary is for Remembrance too.

We wear it at Gallipoli services because there were rosemary bushes growing wild on the Gallipoli Peninsula.

*It’s a matter of personal choice whether someone chooses to wear a poppy and how they choose to wear it. We simply ask that if you do wear a poppy, you wear it with pride*

Royal British Legion .

Yes, wear your poppy with pride and do not be afraid to wear it because there are those who believe, wrongly, that it a symbol of war, of jingoism etc.

It is not, it is for Remembrance and for Peace. We can be proud of those who fought for our freedom.

Like these Standing With Giants displays - moving, thought provoking and sad. Causes you to reflect on the sacrifices so many individual made and families endured.

I found the Tower of London installation very moving.

Poppies don’t mean pride to me - just profound sadness.

Poppies don’t mean pride to me - just profound sadness.
That and a fervent hope for peace.

The prayers at a Remembrance service are always about those who are suffering and a fervent prayer for peace.

Sorry but that just sounds like using poppies and remembrance to have a go at the 'flags' and make a political point, I am not sure how respectful that is.

My thoughts exactly Galaxy. The two are completely separate and the remembrance shouldn't be tarnished.

Thank you. I was going to post something similar but thought I would be told I was being churlish.

Poppies are not a symbol of pride in one's country.

Poppies are a symbol of Remembrance and are worn as a symbol of that and as a hope for peace.

Flags/Standards will be carried at Remembrance day parades when we honour and remember those who died for our freedom and in the hope for peace.

"Remembrance does not glorify war and its symbol, the red poppy, is a sign of both Remembrance and hope for a peaceful future."
"Remembrance honours those who serve to defend our democratic freedoms and way of life."
"We unite across faiths, cultures and backgrounds to remember the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community from United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. We will remember them."

Royal British Legion.

The 8000 poppies are knitted. Volunteers spent 2,800 hours on the display.
The project, created by the local Knit and Knatter group, was unveiled at St John's Church in Worcester.

Such a dedicated effort - and yes, replicated in many parts of the country by similar communities.

Dreadful. And so many unknown.

It is very moving to see the poppies patiently made by those who want to carry on the remembrance.
I do feel sad for all those young lives lost.

Crochet I think?

My WI makes around 3 post-box toppers every year and vies with others for the prime spot which is the post-box outside Waitrose.

Our Waitrose post box is being removed to become digital whatever that means? Such a shame.

NotSpaghetti Wed 22-Oct-25 08:47:59

So what are they made of please?
I can guess at what they might be made out of.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 22-Oct-25 08:45:35

I do love post box toppings😄.

When I was visiting my daughter in the summer she took me to Roberttown near to where she lives. This lovely place was covered with knitted and crocheted bunting with post-box and bollard toppers all showing something significant to the local area.
My WI makes around 3 post-box toppers every year and vies with others for the prime spot which is the post-box outside Waitrose. At the moment we have Breast Cancer Awareness with knitted boobs. The public are asked to have a feel to see if they can find the one with the marble. It comes down this week for the Royal British Legion to display theirs for Remembrance. I enjoy seeing any attempt to display our patriotism and love of our country, history and culture. To my mind there isn't enough of it.

MayBee70 Wed 22-Oct-25 08:36:41

It only just crossed my mind after they were mentioned in a previous post but, to me knitted post box toppers represent everything good about this country.
