Pride in your country

The effort and dedication these women put in to making thousands of poppies to display in their church in Worcester shows more pride in their country than all the tatty nylon flags dangling off lampposts put together. The message is clearly pride and remembrance.

It certainly shows more pride and respect than the spray painted St George’s flags on war monuments, roundabouts and church walls

What are they made of StoneofDestiny?

Maremia Wed 22-Oct-25 06:59:07

They do look amazing.

They are probably knitted , crocheted, or even made from the bottoms of large plastic bottles that have been painted. Our church has a similar display every year for Remembrance Day.

We usually have a plethora of poppies round here, starting with the church, moving onto postbox toppers, then up in the vllage they are strung between shops and railings.

A lot of work and organisation by dedicated knitters 👏👏👏

My knitted poppies will adorn our pier. Together with the other 100,000 plus. As you know the pier is 1 1/3 miles long so we met up in libraries etc to sew the poppies onto a rope
Can’t wait to see it.

Sorry but that just sounds like using poppies and remembrance to have a go at the 'flags' and make a political point, I am not sure how respectful that is.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 22-Oct-25 07:48:40

petra I will be visiting the pier with the GC to see them 🌺👍

My thoughts exactly Galaxy. The two are completely separate and the remembrance shouldn't be tarnished.

I don't see how it is a reaction to the flags, as it's been done in many different parts of the country for a good few years now. We have a local group who make the knitted post box toppers and they've been doing crocheted poppies which decorate the fences around the local war memorial for several years.

I found the Tower of London installation very moving.

Poppies don’t mean pride to me - just profound sadness.

I agree that poppies don't mean pride.
But I don't think they necessarily mean sadness either.
To me they symbolise hope and new life. They were the first flowers to grow in the battle fields on the Western Front, showing the continuity and resilience of life after devastation.

The association with flags didn't cross my mind until mentioned.

It only just crossed my mind after they were mentioned in a previous post but, to me knitted post box toppers represent everything good about this country.

When I was visiting my daughter in the summer she took me to Roberttown near to where she lives. This lovely place was covered with knitted and crocheted bunting with post-box and bollard toppers all showing something significant to the local area.
My WI makes around 3 post-box toppers every year and vies with others for the prime spot which is the post-box outside Waitrose. At the moment we have Breast Cancer Awareness with knitted boobs. The public are asked to have a feel to see if they can find the one with the marble. It comes down this week for the Royal British Legion to display theirs for Remembrance. I enjoy seeing any attempt to display our patriotism and love of our country, history and culture. To my mind there isn't enough of it.

I do love post box toppings😄.

NotSpaghetti Wed 22-Oct-25 08:47:59

So what are they made of please?
I can guess at what they might be made out of.

Our Waitrose post box is being removed to become digital whatever that means? Such a shame.

Crochet I think?

It is very moving to see the poppies patiently made by those who want to carry on the remembrance.
I do feel sad for all those young lives lost.

loopyloo Wed 22-Oct-25 09:28:24

Dreadful. And so many unknown.

StoneofDestiny Wed 22-Oct-25 18:22:04

The 8000 poppies are knitted. Volunteers spent 2,800 hours on the display.
The project, created by the local Knit and Knatter group, was unveiled at St John's Church in Worcester.

Such a dedicated effort - and yes, replicated in many parts of the country by similar communities.

StoneofDestiny Wed 22-Oct-25 18:30:14

It’s like these breathtaking Standing with Giants displays. Really makes you stop and think of the sacrifice and sadness many families endured.

Thank you. I was going to post something similar but thought I would be told I was being churlish.

Poppies are not a symbol of pride in one's country.

Poppies are a symbol of Remembrance and are worn as a symbol of that and as a hope for peace.

Flags/Standards will be carried at Remembrance day parades when we honour and remember those who died for our freedom and in the hope for peace.

"Remembrance does not glorify war and its symbol, the red poppy, is a sign of both Remembrance and hope for a peaceful future."
"Remembrance honours those who serve to defend our democratic freedoms and way of life."
"We unite across faiths, cultures and backgrounds to remember the service and sacrifice of the Armed Forces community from United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. We will remember them."

Royal British Legion.
