I found the Tower of London installation very moving.

Poppies donโ€™t mean pride to me - just profound sadness.

I agree that poppies don't mean pride.
But I don't think they necessarily mean sadness either.
To me they symbolise hope and new life. They were the first flowers to grow in the battle fields on the Western Front, showing the continuity and resilience of life after devastation.

The association with flags didn't cross my mind until mentioned.

Sorry but that just sounds like using poppies and remembrance to have a go at the 'flags' and make a political point, I am not sure how respectful that is.

I don't see how it is a reaction to the flags, as it's been done in many different parts of the country for a good few years now. We have a local group who make the knitted post box toppers and they've been doing crocheted poppies which decorate the fences around the local war memorial for several years.

My thoughts exactly Galaxy. The two are completely separate and the remembrance shouldn't be tarnished.

We usually have a plethora of poppies round here, starting with the church, moving onto postbox toppers, then up in the vllage they are strung between shops and railings.

A lot of work and organisation by dedicated knitters ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

My knitted poppies will adorn our pier. Together with the other 100,000 plus. As you know the pier is 1 1/3 miles long so we met up in libraries etc to sew the poppies onto a rope
Canโ€™t wait to see it.

What are they made of StoneofDestiny?

They are probably knitted , crocheted, or even made from the bottoms of large plastic bottles that have been painted. Our church has a similar display every year for Remembrance Day.

They do look amazing.

It certainly shows more pride and respect than the spray painted St Georgeโ€™s flags on war monuments, roundabouts and church walls

The effort and dedication these women put in to making thousands of poppies to display in their church in Worcester shows more pride in their country than all the tatty nylon flags dangling off lampposts put together. The message is clearly pride and remembrance.
