even more reason not to go out at night times

Survey just published stating that Brits are going out later in the evenings than they did before.
I do recall trying to stay out till the sun rose, not any more though.
I will leave that to the young guns now.

Not sure why that's a reason not to go out, Infoman - please could you explain what you mean?

Thanks

fancyflowers Tue 02-Dec-25 10:53:13

Seeing as I'm in bed by 9.00 at the latest, I won't be going out at all at night.
What other people want to do is irrelevant to me.

Crossstitchfan Tue 02-Dec-25 11:01:23

That’s a rather strange and dismissive statement, fancyflowers.

I think Infoman has been watching the police documentaries of town and city centres late at night?

Terrible waste of police time sorting out drunks and results of?

What's strange about it? I was commenting.

Many young people are concerned about going to Christmas work Dos in the evening and getting home safely. Some are asking their Employers to put safety measures in place e.g groups travelling together, sharing taxis etc. It is so sad that the enjoyment of getting together with colleagues is being taken away due to concerns about safety on our streets.

I am meeting my sister in London, will travel up by overground train and get a black cab to the theatre (I do not travel on the underground)

One of our favourite (probably our goat ) books has been dramatised and showing at the National Theatre. We also have dinner reservations afterwards.

I was going to return home by cab and train, but have decided to book a car and driver to pick me up from the restaurant (local to us driver we know and use often)

If DH and I go up to London on our own or with AC and/or GC we always get a driver both ways. It’s quicker, cleaner and far more comfortable.

When we go out to dinner locally one of us drives, anything over a two miles we use taxis. I do not feel comfortable on public transport, find it dirty, smelly and noisy.

Where does this information on ‘many people’ come from Judy54?
I know a fair few young people, in their thirties and their socialising, particularly at this time of year, is carrying on as normal.
Our granddaughter, 18, went out last week with a crowd, they caught the bus back to our village about 11pm. My daughter is out at a naval ball next week with friends, taxi is booked for return at 1am.

Casdon Tue 02-Dec-25 15:02:43

I don’t know anybody who has curtailed evening socialising, I think most of us have always been aware of potential dangers and not traveled alone late at night.

We go out for a drink a couple of nights a week. We're going to do it while can. Obviously we are careful where we go.

What time would be later in the evening? It’s meaningless without some context.
If your going up clubbing your not going to go out at 8pm because your going to still be there at 2/3 am.
Where as if it’s just the pub it probably would be 8pm.

I don’t understand the title of your thread Infoman
“Even more reason” ?
Can you explain what this reason is, and what are the others please 🤷🏻‍♀️?

Dh and I still travel into central London on public transport for evening events, such as theatre, concerts, etc. We’ve never had any trouble and TBH never expect any.
However I will make sure my bag is securely fastened, and we never walk around with phones in our hands - that’s asking for trouble, IMO.

NotSpaghetti Tue 02-Dec-25 17:12:51

Notagran and Petra this is basically what I was questioning.

I agree Witzend I’m 72 next month and have always loved live music. My husband died 13 years ago, and I usually go to gigs on my own, although I have made numerous good friends of all ages through gigging, who I often meet up with, but still travel to and fro on my own. I’ve never had any problem, nor do I expect to, and as you say, common sense to keep good hold of bag, and don’t display phone. I have no intention of giving up going to concerts/theatre until I’m too decrepit to do so independently- I follow a group of performers called The Classic Rock Show, and got 10 gigs booked up and down the country for their next tour, and going up to London on 21/12 to see some of the band, and fellow fans, travelling alone as usual - life’s too short to stop doing what makes you happy whilst able, and of course have the funds to do so ……

I am looking forward to the Messiah this week in central London. I am going alone but it doesn't worry me. I know my route and I sh.all take only a small bag with my phone tucked away inside.
I don't intend to stay in . I do believe you should try to do what you enjoy as long as you are able.By the way I am in my eighties.

My parents were publicans and I remember when closing time was 10 pm. Is there a closing time now?

I'm currently stuck on a very crowded train. I should be home now but the train I should have been on was cancelled. This train doesn't even go to my town so I've got a 49 minute wait for a connection, the original train was direct. Then a bus then a walk up a steep hill. I've gone off public transport today.

So were mine.

Closed every afternoon 3-5pm

Evenings 5-10.30 (11pm Fri & Sat)

Sunday hours 12-2 pm 7-10.30pm

Now they open all day, some with midnight closing or even 1/2am

Our local is 12- 11 Sun - Thu, 12 - 12 Friday and Saturday (live music). Friday is regularly karaoke/open mic/dj, not our scene now, but the younger customers, who’ll hopefully keep the place going when we’re gone, love it.

I don't go out much in the evenings unless I'm with someone else. I would have to walk down an unlit country lane to get to and from the bus stop as I can't drive at night now.
I would be more afraid of tripping over than anyone lurking about.

AmberGran Tue 02-Dec-25 19:40:31

We're not often out after 10 pm unless we are going to the theatre or for dinner. When we go into London we normally get back about 11 pm depending on trains.

We don't wander down dark secluded streets, stay in bright spaces where there are other people and phones and wallets are firmly locked away. There are normally lots of people around at those times. Never had any problems. I think it's much like it has always been - be careful where you go and be aware of your surroundings.

Romola Tue 02-Dec-25 20:32:22

I seldom go to the theatre or a concert in London, but when I do, there are usually other people from my town on the train afterwards. But coming back from my sister's, the station is quiet and not many people on the train, and that does make me uncomfortable although I've never had any trouble.

Perhaps it was the way you wrote it, but it seemed as though you were perfectly happy to tell everyone that you are uncaring. I can’t think why anyone would be happy to show their true character in that way.
