The definition of cool

A letter in the Guardian this morning giving what the writer thinks as a definitive list of what is cool and what is not cool.

I’ll list some

Cool

Less is more - I definitely agree
Monty Don and his jacket
Listening more when talking
Authenticity

Elder cool people include - Daniel Craig, Brad Pitt, George Clooney

People who speak out against injustice.
People who care more about others
Love is cool
Forgiveness is cool

Not cool

Silence is not cool if it is cold
Destroying the planet for financial gain
Killing civilians
Killing children
Belief in supremacy
Hatred

….and of course Lake Geneva is very very cool in November, I wouldn’t recommend a dip.

DD is a wild swimmer, all year round. She would really enjoy a November dip in lake Geneva.

^Young Bryan Ferry was cool😍^

Beg to differ hollysteers - young Bryan Ferry was hot

He was an oxymoron, both cool, and hot.

Cool is something undefinable, it’s like style you either have it or you don’t.

If you are trying to define cool, one thing you definitely are not is cool

In a nutshell. 👏👏👏

Good for her Monica ( inwardly going Nooooo and shivering) just to hear about it.😬

Don't get wound up about it. Let's try not to turn every thread into an extra chapter of War & Peace.

It was a joke - which most people seemed to get.

Cool is anyone or anything that is understated.

For example, Mary Beard and Princess Anne are cool IMHO, Jean Muir dresses and 4711 Cologne.

I think there are many different definitions of 'cool'. I would say, not trying too hard, some degree of restraint, not over dressing, being an individual and comfortable in one's own skin, not overreacting, stylish and probably much more.

I thought cool was just not in nowadays.

Teenagers apparently now saw 'sick' instead of 'cool'. confused

In my opinion Cool will never go out of date, because it’s not about fashion really, it’s about attitude and persona. I don’t think it’s a young person thing, people of any age can be cool, including to their peers.

No. Cool is still used. Sick is used for something amazing, excellent. But the cool teenagers don’t use sick Very chavy.

Bowie was the epitome of cool. It's a thing you either have or you don't. Annie Lennox is also ubercool. Both intensely individualistic people with heaps of talent who left and leave a massive mark on our culture. I am just looking at my era here, there is a lot of cool in each era. What's not cool? Manufactured bands, people trying to be cool and not being themselves, trout pouts, Eastenders (TV), any reality show, so many choices.

"Cool" is not cool, "wicked" dope" perhaps <lol>

I think this Cool business reached it's height in the Sixties with the Swinging Sixties. And it has being going down hill ever since

At one stage. Cool referred to cutting edge elitism art, fashion etc.
People with talent, taste and trendsetters. Not Influencer knobs on the Internet.

Now you even get even get five year olds referring to their new hair cuts as Cool.

Not Cool?
