What gifts do you think are so bad that you really, really do not want them for Christmas?
Mine is a pair of Aldi mania Christmas socks, which I just saw on the upcoming Specials for next week. Just why? In fact, no novelty socks at all for me, thanks..

So naff they're funny.

loopyloo Sun 09-Nov-25 20:58:26

Yes I see the socks!! £1.99
Might make a trip on Thursday.
Read the gas meter today so need to cut down. These will keep me warm.

Not particularly naff, but I have a dear friend who for the last several years gives me the same things for my birthday and Christmas, Mugs how many does she think we need?

A crochet tea cosy from an ex mother in law, I didn’t even have a tea pot! Obviously not up to scratch as a housewife.

The one that sticks in my mind is a Christmas present from my Father in Law back in the early 70s. A pair of flat backed plaster viking figures, made of plaster and painted gold. They were the sort of thing you might have won at a fair and I think we were supposed to stick them on the wall. They travelled around with us for a while and eventually got lost in a house move. So that was all good.

A chinese calender given over 5 Christmas's by DH, nothing else! Too add insult, they were given free to customers. How did I know they were free? Simply because they also gave me one during every December when it was my turn to collect the take away grin

Whiff

Dress from my in laws that was 2 sizes to small and made from horrible material. They said it was to give me incentive to lose weight. I gave it to them back after opening it and that comment. Told my mother in law it more her style .

They gave us money after that..

😲

I hinted at wanting a new watch and OH bought me a kitchen timer. It came in a box that raised my expectations and then completely dashed them. He is the most useless present buyer ever fortunately he has other qualities so we are still together after nearly 40 years and we agreed to just buy what we want, when we want it and we do!

Babs03 Sun 09-Nov-25 19:32:17

Agreed with a few friends not to give gifts at Xmas, best thing we did. Martin Lewis first floated this idea a few years ago. In the majority of cases people are relieved rather than getting the hump.

RosiandherMaw I am sorry you are finding the posts on this thread "goady in the extreme". I saw it as a lighthearted invitation to share some awful presents that had the merit of making us laugh. I am sure I have given some people some real clangers in my time that certainly don't reflect impeccable taste on my part..

Often the sheer desperation of having to buy something, anything, for people you don't necessarily know well or understand leads to some unfortunate choices especially if you are on a limited budget.

On the subject of teapots, let's just say some are beautiful some are not.

This second paragraph says it all.

Spending money you can ill afford on ‘stuff’, that others don’t want and you have no idea what to buy them.

This is why so much present buying is absolutely pointless.

A tad over sensitive RosieandherMaw, there is no intention to name and shame naff gift givers, just to share what we really don’t want, lighthearted and all that.

Yes Allira, they do have Aldi mania printed on them - other novelty socks are available too of course, and I don’t want any of them.

I don't mind Christmassy socks, but preferably black with a bit of glitter (naff or not!) and definitely just for wearing at Christmas.

Sense of humour failure, RosiandherMaw?

I don't think so.
Mocking others whom you don't know has nothing to do with "humour" unless you also subscribe to locker room banter.

TwiceAsNice - My friend buys me an amaryllis every year too. I do like them but they only flower for a couple of weeks at most and then sit around as a bulb for the rest of the year. There is only only aq limited amount you can have too.

A mop and bucket from my then DIL. I would happily plonk it on her head now 😂

Grannybags Sun 09-Nov-25 18:36:04

A plastic tote bag with a shop name on was quite disappointing!

Grannybags Sun 09-Nov-25 18:34:46

A photo of your MIL Magenta…?!!!! 😂

I don’t think this this thread is ‘goady’ Rosie, is surely a bit of a laugh.
🤨

“An Oxfam goat is a much worthier gift than a tacky toy and may be part of helping a child to understand that there are people in the world much worse off than us”

I do realise that, but I don’t think he did at the time as it came without any explanation from his Grandparents & was his only gift from them.

Allira Sun 09-Nov-25 17:55:03

I think that the Aldi socks have Aldimania emblazoned on the side, that's why!

Definitely naff.

Blossoming Sun 09-Nov-25 17:51:09

The naffest Christmas gift I ever received was a huge fake pony skin handbag. It was. Incredibly ugly and the clasp was designed to rip the fingers off anyone attempting to open it.

RosieandherMaw Sun 09-Nov-25 17:43:26

Ye gods - this really is goady in the extreme, designed to make anybody who has given any of the things mentioned (or received them) feel small, devoid of taste, naff and generally worthy of mockery.

D3 once gave me a beautiful straight sided Japanese style teapotwith 2 matching cups which I love. And novelty socks might at least keep your feet warm.
But of course nobody else rejoices in the impeccable taste of Gransnet do they? hmmhmm
