Ugly fashions

I wonder how much longer people will want their bodies covered with tattoos and full of metal piercings?
When will the men tire of stubble on their faces and shaved heads?
And will other, even uglier, fashions replace them?

None in my family have tattoos or piercings that I have seen, a lot regret having them, piercing I just don’t understand, why make yourself less attractive.

Perhaps because most people who get them are doing it for themselves - not to make themselves 'more attractive' in the eyes of someone else?

I like wearing earrings therefore I had my ears pierced.

I wouldn’t have a tattoo, but the younger people who do probably look at older women and think our fashions are ugly too. It really is in the eye of the beholder I think.

I just hope that whoever decides to get a tattoo spends some time choosing something attractive and meaningful to them. The problem is with trendy tattoos, like the barbed wire around the bicep about 20 years ago looks a bit tacky now.
One of my sons, and two of my DIL's have tattoos, and I don't mind so much. It's not for me, though.

Fashion styles come and go; my parents didn't approve of girls wearing jeans, nevermind tight ones (teenager in the 70's). I hated my boys jeans drooping around their hips so badly that they had to walk wide-legged just to keep them up. I'm sure I will disapprove of some of the styles coming in the next few years as my grandchildren hit their teen years. So it goes...

I personally wouldn’t have a tattoo, I’m very indecisive, if I have one , I’d hate it in 2years time . I have 3 piercings in one ear and 2 in the other . My AC both have ear piercings and a very subtle nose piercing.
They don’t have tattoos yet . They’re 35 and 32 .
I don’t hate tattoos and some are beautiful. And I never judge people by their appearance. We had a practice manager who had lots of tattoos and was super efficient, and great at her job .
There’s some very judgemental people on this thread. And the person who said she must have done a good job bringing up her children , because they didn’t have tattoos takes the prize .

I personally don't like them very much but I don't think it is right to impose our views on our children and "punish" them for things like having a tattoo.

I was always put off tattoos when in a tv drama a body washed up on the shore and the detective, on examining the various tattoos and piercings, made the comment that they were a sign of insecurity.

I saw a lady who was probably in her early sixties today. She had some flower and butterfly tattoos on her arms and, though they probably looked attractive when they were done, now her skin was getting a bit crepey they just looked tatty.

WithNobsOnIt Tue 11-Nov-25 20:00:12

The UK allegedly has more people with Tattoos than any other European Country.

I think they and piercings are horrid and a lot of people go well.over the top on having too many The odd flower or butterfly is quite nice

They actually look as though they have disfigured their bodies on purpose. Weird.

Tattoos on general were very looked down upon back in the..And belonged on the forearms of football supporters and sailors according to my father.

My.mother thought you would also see them on Gypsies, Fairground and Circus People.

Can you get temporary tattoos that have a time limit and can be washed off

My 14 year old granddaughter has her nose pierced ( with parental approval) but I don’t think this should be allowed.

What's the difference between this and ear piercing?

If I were young now, I would train to be a plastic surgeon specialising in tattoo removal because in times to come there will be droves of people wanting rid of the things they had applied in youth & now regret.

It is of course in the eye of the beholder. Myself I hate tattoos.

I thought this thread was about the awful wide legged trousers dominating the fashion scene.🫤

They can look amazing, but I think it's an incredibly difficult look to get right, & most of us don't have a personal stylist...

Romola Tue 11-Nov-25 18:54:09

Since my 30s I've had very sparse eyelashes. They were never wonderful and I think I wrecked them wearing false eyelashes as the pop stars and models did in the 60s. My DD never wore them.

I guess I’m lucky that I can see beyond someone’s appearance to the person beneath , it seems a lot of gransnetters don’t have this ability.
Gransnett going full on judgmental as usual .

TerriBull Tue 11-Nov-25 18:03:59

I love wide trousers but I quite accept some don't fair enough we're all entitled to express our personal tastes.

Me too! Extra wide, and barrel legs. All utterly hideous IMO.

Surely different styles suit different people. My DD looks great in wide legged trousers as she is very slim and has long legs. They look far better on her than straight leg or drainpipe trousers.

My ex royal Marine son has a couple of beautiful tattoos on his back and shoulder. His Marine friends generally had tattoos do with the Marines, but when son was in Thailand he had a couple of angel tattoos.

4allweknow Tue 11-Nov-25 17:28:54

Me too, along with the tops that are shorter in the front (usually baggy) than at the back.

BlessedArt Tue 11-Nov-25 17:26:20

Beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. I think it’s fine for one to have their own personal preference, but there is something pathological about being so judgmental about the way others should look. It really cannot be healthy.

The trouble with tattoos is that they're permanent. However artistic they are, if the wearers get fed up with them they can't do anything about it. Are under-18s allowed them? I haven't got anything against temporary inking, such as henna.

No, in the UK anyway you have to be 18, legally speaking, to get a tattoo.

62Granny Tue 11-Nov-25 17:11:07

I don't dislike tattoos or piercing and DH had one at 50 and I did consider one myself but never bothered, I know lots of people who have them . I think it can be a generation thing as years ago it was considered that people who had them were very rough. But times and people have changed.
