I wonder how much longer people will want their bodies covered with tattoos and full of metal piercings?
When will the men tire of stubble on their faces and shaved heads?
And will other, even uglier, fashions replace them?

If I were young now, I would train to be a plastic surgeon specialising in tattoo removal because in times to come there will be droves of people wanting rid of the things they had applied in youth & now regret.

My 14 year old granddaughter has her nose pierced ( with parental approval) but I don’t think this should be allowed.

What's the difference between this and ear piercing?

The UK allegedly has more people with Tattoos than any other European Country.

I think they and piercings are horrid and a lot of people go well.over the top on having too many The odd flower or butterfly is quite nice

They actually look as though they have disfigured their bodies on purpose. Weird.

Tattoos on general were very looked down upon back in the..And belonged on the forearms of football supporters and sailors according to my father.

My.mother thought you would also see them on Gypsies, Fairground and Circus People.

Can you get temporary tattoos that have a time limit and can be washed off

Deedaa Tue 11-Nov-25 20:08:04

I saw a lady who was probably in her early sixties today. She had some flower and butterfly tattoos on her arms and, though they probably looked attractive when they were done, now her skin was getting a bit crepey they just looked tatty.

I was always put off tattoos when in a tv drama a body washed up on the shore and the detective, on examining the various tattoos and piercings, made the comment that they were a sign of insecurity.

I personally don't like them very much but I don't think it is right to impose our views on our children and "punish" them for things like having a tattoo.

I personally wouldn’t have a tattoo, I’m very indecisive, if I have one , I’d hate it in 2years time . I have 3 piercings in one ear and 2 in the other . My AC both have ear piercings and a very subtle nose piercing.
They don’t have tattoos yet . They’re 35 and 32 .
I don’t hate tattoos and some are beautiful. And I never judge people by their appearance. We had a practice manager who had lots of tattoos and was super efficient, and great at her job .
There’s some very judgemental people on this thread. And the person who said she must have done a good job bringing up her children , because they didn’t have tattoos takes the prize .

I just hope that whoever decides to get a tattoo spends some time choosing something attractive and meaningful to them. The problem is with trendy tattoos, like the barbed wire around the bicep about 20 years ago looks a bit tacky now.
One of my sons, and two of my DIL's have tattoos, and I don't mind so much. It's not for me, though.

Fashion styles come and go; my parents didn't approve of girls wearing jeans, nevermind tight ones (teenager in the 70's). I hated my boys jeans drooping around their hips so badly that they had to walk wide-legged just to keep them up. I'm sure I will disapprove of some of the styles coming in the next few years as my grandchildren hit their teen years. So it goes...

Casdon Tue 11-Nov-25 21:11:38

I wouldn’t have a tattoo, but the younger people who do probably look at older women and think our fashions are ugly too. It really is in the eye of the beholder I think.

None in my family have tattoos or piercings that I have seen, a lot regret having them, piercing I just don’t understand, why make yourself less attractive.

Perhaps because most people who get them are doing it for themselves - not to make themselves 'more attractive' in the eyes of someone else?

I like wearing earrings therefore I had my ears pierced.

Earrings are obviously to make women more attractive to others, it’s tongue studs, nose rings and other peircing that I don’t get, is it a form of self abuse for some reason.

specki4eyes Wed 12-Nov-25 06:53:34

My DIL sniffed disparangingly at ear piercing for years, even just for one pair of earrings. Last time I saw her she'd got herself a nose ring! And she was suffering a heavy cold... as I looked on in horror. Ugh!

foxie48 Wed 12-Nov-25 08:20:37

"earrings are obviously to make women more attractive to others" David49

Really? I wear them to please myself, just like everything else I wear. They are part of my identity. I put them in at the same time I put in my hearing aids. smile As a woman of nearly 77, happily married for nearly 40 years, the last thing I'm interested in is being "attractive" Fgs who am I supposed to be attracting? This idea that women wear jewellery to be attractive needs challenging because IME most women, especially mature independent women, dress to please themselves, no one else.

Unbelievable the self righteous judgemental comments on this thread - and I agree, whoever it was who said their offspring didn’t have tattoos as they’d been brought up properly- congratulations you’ve taken gold ….

David49 Wed 12-Nov-25 09:14:17

This thread is about ugly fashion, I find earrings on a woman attractive, other visible piercings and many tattoos I find unattractive, in the same way certain styles of clothing I find unattractive.
Which has nothing to do with “judging” a person

I thought this thread was about the awful wide legged trousers dominating the fashion scene.🫤

They can look amazing, but I think it's an incredibly difficult look to get right, & most of us don't have a personal stylist...

Personally I don’t think they even look good on the size 8, 5 foot 10 models in the photos. Or rather, they’d look so much better in something else.

They think they do look good though, which is the point I think, as with tattoos. One person’s ugly is another person’s beautiful. I’m just glad we’re not all clones, it would be very boring if we all looked the same, and had nobody else’s taste to critique.

Freedom to choose what and how an individual decorates their body, remember the phrase Be kind! Some very judgemental comments on here.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 12-Nov-25 09:38:22

Oh dear!

Surely GN is better than this?

People dress for themselves, if they want tattoos, their bodies their choice, that goes for piercings too.

GrannyGravy13 Wed 12-Nov-25 09:40:29

As for wide legged jeans and trousers, remember when women first wore trousers, yep they were wide legged (40’s and 50’s) along with being fashionable in the 70”s…
